  • Spacious site on a working farm on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula
  • Kennack Sands five minutes’ drive; St Michael’s Mount half an hour
  • Café and food shop on site; firepits and barbecues; farm animals
Rural idyll or beach holiday? If you can’t make up your mind, you can hedge your bets at Trerise Farm Campsite, a spacious, peaceful spot surrounded by the vast Cornish countryside – and a mere five-minute drive (or a half-hour’s walk) from the spectacular coastline of the Lizard Peninsula and beaches like Kennack Sands. Start by choosing your own pitch over the several fields available, then head over to the on-site café to check in, say hi to the owners and stock up on tasty snacks and drinks. A farm shop on site sells basic provisions, including farm-reared meat; if you need more supplies for your barbecue, there’s a convenience store in the village of Ruan Minor (five minutes’ drive) or in Mullion (10 minutes). And if you fancy a break from cooking, there are restaurants (plus shops and supermarkets) in the medium-sized town of Helston (20 minutes). Your canine buddies are welcome to join you (and Kennack Sands East is a dog-friendly beach), but please make sure that they’re kept on leads and under control at all times. This is, after all, a working farm, and you’re likely to come across chickens, goats, miniature ponies, pigs and geese during your stay. All of the farm animals are friendly and curious, but mind your fingers if you want to fuss them. Firepits are allowed, and you can buy a fire bucket, wood and kindling straight from the site. Facilities include toilets, showers, waste disposal and a washing-up point.

Liked: Lovely peaceful location- owners/staff onsite were extremely welcoming and friendly and it is a lovely place to stay and see the animals on the farm. We live fairly local but wanted a break so stayed for a night and would highly recommend! Also as a side note- due to a very minimal amount of lighting in the local area, stars are very visible at night and was lovely to see from the camper!

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Choosing not to stay.

Disliked: Arrived to a welcome who I can only assume was the owner? who thought it was funny that I was probably going to get stuck in the wet field or stay in the farm yard driveway. Sacked this place off went down the road to a quality run site.

From the manager: Thank you for understanding the reality of the phenomenal amount of rain we have had recently. We are glad you found somewhere better suited to you.

Liked: Great campsite, in beautiful location. Showers and toilets look very basic on first sight but are great. Large toilet and shower cubicles, lots of pressure in shower, really hot and no timers on the shower 🤗. Very dog friendly site. Caretaker on site is really friendly and informative. Not used the Cafe yet but popped in to pay my fees. Lovely large cafe. Lots of space. Lots of goodies, cakes etc, plus essentials, milk, butter. Booked for 2 nights and extended to 4. 🤗🤗

Liked: I stayed a couple of nights with my camper van. Much of the site is on a gentle slope, but I was able to find a couple of good level spots. Staying late in the season there was lots of space to choose from. The on-site cafe is, I imagine, an extremely useful facility, though the one morning I did make use of it - albeit very briefly - there were some unforeseen staffing issues which meant that it had to close temporarily. This was nobody's fault however - just a one-off. The site was very peaceful throughout my stay, though I imagine that might be a different story at peak times.

Disliked: A couple of small improvements would certainly make one's stay a bit more pleasurable. Firstly, the shower units and the toilet/washbasin units didn't appear to have anywhere to put things down other than the floor (which was very wet during my stay!). The hooks on the back of the doors aren't too useful for specs, toilet bags, etc. Therefore some combination of shelving and/or seating (plastic chairs perhaps?) would have been really useful. Secondly, on my second night I inadvertently parked up in a part of the site with no nearby standpipe. I didn't realise because I arrived in the dark. So a few more strategically placed standpipes probably wouldn't go amiss. A minor grumble though.

Liked: Clean and excellent value for money.

Disliked: Be aware this is an area where helicopters from culdrose can be noisy and we're flying til after midnight on the first night of my stay. A shelf for soap etc in showers would be a bonus!

Liked: A spacious and clean campsite with on site cafe, wildlife, toilets and shower. We paid about £30 for 2 nights (tent) which is amazing value for money especially as check in and check out is anytime. We would definitely come back to this campsite. Fantastic location too!

Disliked: Can't give 5* for WiFi as there wasn't any, but this is normal for a campsite. We expected to have no WiFi for our stay.

Local attractions

Are you up for a bracing hike along the South West Coast Path? You can join this long-distance trail at Kennack Sands and head west, towards Great Britain’s southernmost spot, Lizard Point (two hours on foot; or 15 minutes’ drive). Take in views of the Atlantic Ocean and keep your eyes peeled for seals. Head to the town of Marazion (40 minutes) and wait for low tide, perhaps killing a few hours at RSPB Marazion Marsh, home to herons and egrets. Then walk along the causeway to St Michael’s Mount, a small, green island topped by a centuries-old castle. The harbourside National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth (40 minutes) has interesting displays on the local nautical heritage (plus temporary exhibitions on related subjects, including pirates and tattoos). From Falmouth you can also catch a ferry across the river estuary to St Mawes Castle, built by Henry VIII in the 16th century.
