  • Spacious site on a working farm on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula
  • Kennack Sands five minutes’ drive; St Michael’s Mount half an hour
  • Café and food shop on site; firepits and barbecues; farm animals
Rural idyll or beach holiday? If you can’t make up your mind, you can hedge your bets at Trerise Farm Campsite, a spacious, peaceful spot surrounded by the vast Cornish countryside – and a mere five-minute drive (or a half-hour’s walk) from the spectacular coastline of the Lizard Peninsula and beaches like Kennack Sands. Start by choosing your own pitch over the several fields available, then head over to the on-site café to check in, say hi to the owners and stock up on tasty snacks and drinks. A farm shop on site sells basic provisions, including farm-reared meat; if you need more supplies for your barbecue, there’s a convenience store in the village of Ruan Minor (five minutes’ drive) or in Mullion (10 minutes). And if you fancy a break from cooking, there are restaurants (plus shops and supermarkets) in the medium-sized town of Helston (20 minutes). Your canine buddies are welcome to join you (and Kennack Sands East is a dog-friendly beach), but please make sure that they’re kept on leads and under control at all times. This is, after all, a working farm, and you’re likely to come across chickens, goats, miniature ponies, pigs and geese during your stay. All of the farm animals are friendly and curious, but mind your fingers if you want to fuss them. Firepits are allowed, and you can buy a fire bucket, wood and kindling straight from the site. Facilities include toilets, showers, waste disposal and a washing-up point.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Brilliant place to camp me and my 5 kids love the outdoors, I had a converted van and 2 tents up, the fact that there is no pitch constraints is fantastic and the toilets showers and washing up area are great. You can go see and feed the animals which is ideal when you have kids. The shop/ cafe is great if you need to pick a couple things up. Ideal if it's your first time camping or 100th time, no WiFi but that's the point of camping.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely family run campsite. Extremely helpful and welcoming and made us feel wanted and at home! Definitely re visiting soon.

Disliked: Nothing. Would be handy to have a little wind direction Cockerell somewhere. But certainly not a negative.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Very quiet and spacious. We went into the second field and there was only one other camper, bliss! Flexible arrival / departure and no pitch allocation Ideally located for both west and east coast of the Lizard peninsula. Only 20 min drive to big supermarket in Helston. Very friendly owner. Facilities were cleaned regularly. Hot showers all day. Washing up area very clean and tidy. Loved having fire pit.

Disliked: Roof overhang to shower facilities could be more generous - I was feeling the wind and rain in the shower through the gap! The number of toilet cubicles were perfect for our stay as it was quiet but may be a problem during the busy season. Slightly sloping camping field so needed to pitch tent carefully ;-) Not a grumble but Sunday opening for the cafe might have been nice.

Liked: Beautiful campsite, lovely views of the countryside everywhere you looked which made for Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The owner and everyone we met who worked at the site was very helpful and friendly. Showers and toilets were always very clean and there was enough to go around. The fields were really lovely, loved the long grass kept in the centre as it made it feel a bit more private, but there was loads of space anyway. Great shop and cafe, sold a big range of useful bits and pieces. My son loved the animals on site, was such a great bonus to be able to feed the animals in the mornings. The best campsite we have stayed at, had everything we would want at a very reasonable price.

Local attractions

Are you up for a bracing hike along the South West Coast Path? You can join this long-distance trail at Kennack Sands and head west, towards Great Britain’s southernmost spot, Lizard Point (two hours on foot; or 15 minutes’ drive). Take in views of the Atlantic Ocean and keep your eyes peeled for seals. Head to the town of Marazion (40 minutes) and wait for low tide, perhaps killing a few hours at RSPB Marazion Marsh, home to herons and egrets. Then walk along the causeway to St Michael’s Mount, a small, green island topped by a centuries-old castle. The harbourside National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth (40 minutes) has interesting displays on the local nautical heritage (plus temporary exhibitions on related subjects, including pirates and tattoos). From Falmouth you can also catch a ferry across the river estuary to St Mawes Castle, built by Henry VIII in the 16th century.
