  • Peaceful and secluded site with spectacular Cornish views near Helston
  • A 10-minute drive to Porthleven pubs; South West Coast Path 15 minutes
  • Dog-friendly wildlife meadow with showers and a toilet
Lena May’s Meadow is a simple wild camping site with showers and a toilet, tucked away on a peaceful field close to Helston in Cornwall. In fact, it’s so peaceful here that the birdsong is deafening – and you’ll have plenty of space to yourselves as there are only a few pitches available. Access to the camping field is up a narrow, unmade lane, with free parking. Cars stay in the parking area, please, to avoid damage to the site. The owners provide wheelbarrows so you can transport all your gear easily, and they ask that you use headphones to listen to music to avoid noise impact on local wildlife (remember those birds?) and also so it doesn’t interfere with your fellow campers. There are plenty of areas to explore on site, or you can walk along old mining tracks – the Poldark Mine (20 minutes’ drive) is one of the few open for tours by the way. You have 360-degree views of Cornwall from the top of Tregonning Hill (10 minutes), and long-distance hikers can be yomping on the South West Coast Path in 15 minutes. A short drive takes you to Porthleven, with its fishing pier and beach, plus a well-known seafront pub and a whole range of takeaways. You can also pick up essentials from the handy stores in Helston (both 10 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We travelled a grand total of 12 miles (from Penzance) to stay at Lena May’s Meadow. We wanted to give our 5yo and 1yo a bit of a bank holiday adventure whilst road-testing a new family tent. We couldn’t have picked a nicer site. The meadow is at the end of a long farm track which means it’s set well back from any road. The paths and 6 pitches are cut into the meadow which means you’re surrounded by long grass, giving a real feel of privacy even when the other pitches are occupied. The facilities are basic - a composting toilet, a shower and a basin for washing up - but they were all in full working order and immaculately clean for our stay. The shower is a little cramped (I am 6’3”) but the pressure and temperature were both great. A fire pit was provided and wood is available to purchase if necessary. Having a fire as the sun went down and the stars came out was a real treat. Lena May’s Meadow is exactly what we look for in a campsite. You feel immersed in nature and extremely peaceful, and the lack of light pollution gives rise to some stunning stargazing. The owners, Fergus and Leeann, are extremely pleasant and approachable should you need anything. Fergus met us on arrival to show us around, and you get the sense that they genuinely enjoy sharing their corner of paradise with people. We’ve already booked to go back next spring and we can’t wait.

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: We are so happy to share our ''little corner of paradise'' with you. We are always wary of tall people like yourself in the shower but it definitely stood up to the challenge. Look forward to seeing you all again next Spring. Thank you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! Had a fab stay at Lena May’s. Loved that the pitches were really big and had lots of space between them, plus you could choose your own. Lots of privacy because the pitches are mowed out of a meadow, so high grass all around, plus lots of wildlife to see! Fergus was so helpful and was really easy to contact both via text if there was anything we needed. They were both so accommodating and friendly! Really great location, close enough to drive to lizard, lands end, north coast, etc. in less than an hour. Overall, a great place to stay!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We all loved our stay at Lena Meadow's. The Campsite offers large pitches spaced out for maximum peace and privacy in a gorgeous meadow. During our stay we were luck enough to see a deer peak out of a hedgerow right next to our tent. Conveniently located its only a 10 minute drive to Porthlevan, but also central enough that one can use as a base to explore Cornwall The facilities were clean and in good order, enough to ensure all comforts are met while keeping the 'wild camping vibe'. Of note the Composting Toilet, which I was a little apprehensive of before arriving, is clean, modern and does not smell - regular up keep ensures that it is nicer to visit than many campsites' plumbed in facilities. The hosts are lovely, greeting us when we arrived, enthusiastically answering our questions about local nature and available if/when needed I hope that we can return again soon

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location was perfect for us, quiet and away from noisy roads, close to the beach and we were lucky to have the whole camp to ourselves. Clean facilities and lovely owners, that brought us an amazing barbeque. Absolutely loved every minute and will return next year. Definitely recommend it.

Disliked: The path leading to the camp needs a bit of trimming, as it scratches the car and the terrain is more suitable for a SUV or similar, as lower cars will hit the rocks underneath.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Arina, Over joyed to have you stay with us. So happy you had a great time. We will make sure to pay special attention to the road in. If we cut back too much it loses that Leafy tunnel to oasis feel. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Really good would definitely stay again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet location, peaceful and basic but clean amenities and owners were very friendly.

Disliked: The shower shed gets extremely hot due to the gas boiler...prehaps a skylight window?

From the manager: Hi Sophie, so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I took your advice to hand and the shower has been modified. The water heater is now outside so there is more room to relax. We are looking forward to seeing you again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent site, extremely peaceful. Facilities are a little basic but very well looked after and very clean. There's no drinking water on the site but a there's a tap you can use in walking distance, a minute or two. We had a great time, during most of the time we had the entire place to ourselves. Pitches are huge and it seems there's rarely more than two or three pitches occupied. Highly recommended if you like camping in the wild and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. There's lots to see nearby, we will have to return. Superfriendly hosts too, thanks a lot :-)

From the manager: What a review Matthias. So happy you loved our wee campsite, we must be doing something right. Really looking forward to seeing you again soon.
