Elysian Fields: Tony's Tavern

General

  • Family-run site a short walk from pubs in Ashton and Breage
  • Three miles from the beach, harbour and restaurants of Porthleven
  • Playground, licensed shop and bar/restaurant on site

According to Greek mythology, the original ‘Elysian Fields’ were beautiful meadows, the ultimate paradise, and a place to enjoy perfect happiness. Believed to be in the west, at the end of the earth, and surrounded by ‘Oceanus’, they provided sanctuary and breathed new life into all those worthy of entering.

Cornwall’s own Elysian Fields is between the little villages of Breage and Ashton, with seven acres of serene space and scenic views towards Tregonning Hill, as well as distant glimpses of the sea and cliffs of the Lizard peninsula. Pitch up here and you’ll be able to stroll along quiet footpaths to the local villages or walk to the top of Tregonning Hill, which stands at 194 metres and gives views from coast to coast over west Cornwall, including Mount’s Bay and St Ives. More adventurous walkers can explore the Godolphin Estate, while those who’ve come along for the coast can take a short drive to the ancient harbour at Porthleven or gorgeous Praa Sands beach.

The site has its own bar and restaurant, Tony's Tavern, with draught Cornish beers and cider. Cornish breakfasts and lighter breakfast baps are available in the mornings between 9am and 11am, and a range of evening meals are on offer between 6pm and 9pm. Takeaway meals can be delivered to the pitches if you prefer.

To make your stay more comfortable, picnic benches, windbreaks and firepits can be hired, with a plentiful supply of kiln-dried logs on sale in the shop to help warm up cooler evenings.

Also on site are a playground, a small shop, and a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and a tumble dryer. Guests also have free use of two large freezers, a fridge, an iron and ironing board, and a microwave.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The grocery shop is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The restaurant is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/04 and 04/09.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Thank you for your kind review. I was a little surprised that you only gave 3 out of 5 for customer service, as my staff informed me that you did not have any bedding and our staff kindly found some for you and being the season of goodwill did not charge you. Our staff also provided you with free logs and made no charge for the child that you brought along that was not on your booking form. Our staff took it upon themselves to do this above and beyond our normal service hence why I was surprised that you did not credit them for this.

Honestly we just cant fault this campsite! Its in an excellent location for exploring, and the facilities are second to none! You will not find better shower / toilets on any campsite!

We also had quite alot of rain whilst we was there and i think its important to mention the ground did not flood!

We will 100% be back thank you so much for everything! You really do have an amazing site!

The size of the pitch and friendliness of staff. The toilet block was very clean and modern. Convenient location. On bus route and easy access to local walks

    Disliked:

Shower facilities were shared male and female in what looked like a freight crate, though in fairness they did a new purpose built block under construction so this should be solved going forward. We only found one dish washing sink, there were not many on site so not a problem but imagine it would be high season.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
I am happy to let you know that our new shower facilities are now open. I would like to point out that only the entrance to the showers were shared for a few weeks while we were opening the new shower block inside were 4 completely lockable shower rooms.
I am inclined to think this review rather mischievous as we have 6 sinks around the campsite where dishes can be washed and we are adding an extra 2 sinks within the next week or so. Perhaps a visit to spec savers should have been on your itinerary as every sink is large and it seems that you could not find them.

Everything. Staff all very friendly and made us feel like part of the family whilst we were there. Bar excellent - toilet and showers excellent - lovely to have a hot shower when feeling cold from the weather. Area lovely - can’t fault anything at our stay - really looking forward to hopefully going back. Weather not that good for our stay but staff really looked after us when things got a bit wet and windy!! Campsite owners really made us feel very welcome and enjoyed the banter with their good humoured staff. Nothing too much trouble and due to staff diligence we felt very safe camping there.

We stayed in the dome and it was so much nicer than we expected. Equipped with a comfy double bed, tv and wood burner. This dome was camping luxury. Outside a modern gas bbq with Pots /pans etc .
The owners are very welcoming and lovely people.
The site will have a new toilet/shower block but the ones that were there were very clean and well maintained. The bar area is a very nice place to have a drink after a busy day visiting places nearby.
The site is located so close to many places of interest eg lands end/the lizard/ st ives being up to a 40 minute drive through some gorgeous country side. The scenery down here is stunning.
Shops and a small town just a short drive away you are not far from anything you would need.
We really enjoyed our stay here and will be going back in the future.
    Highly recommended site.

Local attractions

Having gazed out over Tregonning Hill, it's a fine idea to amble over there for a closer look. It’ll take you around 45 minutes of leisurely walking to get to the top for some excellent views over both north and south coasts and plenty of historical info on the old mining pits and war memorial.

Likewise, the beaches you’ve glimpsed from afar look pretty fab from up close too. The sands of Porthleven, three miles away, are the nearest, and there are plenty of others a short drive away, including Praa Sands and Marazion (from where you can take a boat or cross the causeway to St Michael’s Mount).

Arty types may like to spend a day in St Ives, half an hour’s drive away, taking in the exhibits of Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perhaps less highbrow but equally entertaining are the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek and the rides and attractions at The Flambards Experience, both of which are around a 15-minute drive away.

Must see

  • Flambards (3.9 miles)
  • St Michael's Mount (6.0 miles)
  • National Seal Sanctuary (6.1 miles)

  • Godolphin (2.0 miles)
