Elysian Fields: Outside the pod

General

  • Family-run site a short walk from pubs in Ashton and Breage
  • Three miles from the beach, harbour and restaurants of Porthleven
  • Playground, licensed shop and bar/restaurant on site

According to Greek mythology, the original ‘Elysian Fields’ were beautiful meadows, the ultimate paradise, and a place to enjoy perfect happiness. Believed to be in the west, at the end of the earth, and surrounded by ‘Oceanus’, they provided sanctuary and breathed new life into all those worthy of entering.

Cornwall’s own Elysian Fields is between the little villages of Breage and Ashton, with seven acres of serene space and scenic views towards Tregonning Hill, as well as distant glimpses of the sea and cliffs of the Lizard peninsula. Pitch up here and you’ll be able to stroll along quiet footpaths to the local villages or walk to the top of Tregonning Hill, which stands at 194 metres and gives views from coast to coast over west Cornwall, including Mount’s Bay and St Ives. More adventurous walkers can explore the Godolphin Estate, while those who’ve come along for the coast can take a short drive to the ancient harbour at Porthleven or gorgeous Praa Sands beach.

The site has its own bar and restaurant, Tony's Tavern, with draught Cornish beers and cider. Cornish breakfasts and lighter breakfast baps are available in the mornings between 9am and 11am, and a range of evening meals are on offer between 6pm and 9pm. Takeaway meals can be delivered to the pitches if you prefer.

To make your stay more comfortable, picnic benches, windbreaks and firepits can be hired, with a plentiful supply of kiln-dried logs on sale in the shop to help warm up cooler evenings.

Also on site are a playground, a small shop, and a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and a tumble dryer. Guests also have free use of two large freezers, a fridge, an iron and ironing board, and a microwave.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The grocery shop is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The restaurant is open between 01/04 and 04/09.

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/04 and 04/09.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Good playground for children and good bar and toilets and showers. Very friendly staff and generally chilled atmosphere. Plenty of space within pitches, bell tent was really well stocked and comfortable beds.

    Disliked:

Shower / toilet blocks needed more regular cleaning. Some mould on the tent and difficult to walk to 2 local pubs with children because no pavement.

Really lovely site; amazing shower / bathroom block; super sized level pitch with electricity and water; was very quiet during the day. Definitely recommended.

    Disliked:

Shop opening hours seemed a little erratic. Said 9am opening but that wasn't always the case.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, We apologies that you found the shop opening times ''erratic''. As you can imagine it is very hard to get staff at the moment and our main priority is to keep the site clean and tidy and with limited staff we do try our best. We are always out on site so if something is needed from the shop we are always around to open it up. We hope to see you back again

The location is perfect , beautiful beaches , towns , supermarkets and theme parks are all on its door step .
The site is very very well kept , big pitches which are well marked out , a very modern querky shower and toilet block with plenty of rooms , which helps to eliminate queues.
A bar with indoor and outdoor seating plenty of drink choice , hot decent food and events like live singers .
It has a kids play area , a small shop for groceries when you forget something .. it also has a mini launderette , communal fridges and freezers .
The water points are conveniently dotted around the site along with the bins which were regularly emptied .
There's a wetsuit outdoor shower point
It even has a path / walk to local pubs and playing fields that keep you away from the roads ..

The place is absolutely brilliant we loved it .

Just back from two glorious weeks staying at Elysian Fields. What an amazing campsite! It's really well maintained, the facilities are really modern and kept clean and the owners are lovely people and really happy to help in any way they can. Fantastic location, just 5 mins from Praa Sands and 10 mins from Porthleven. We were so sad to have to leave but we will definitely be coming back next year! Thank you Elysian Fields!!!!

And all our friends are pleased with the facilities also, which I must say is a rarity in camping.
Good size pitches and very clean fields, bins are emptied every morning, the showers are very modern/contemporary better than our own at home! Staff are also polite and very helpful.

Local attractions

Having gazed out over Tregonning Hill, it's a fine idea to amble over there for a closer look. It’ll take you around 45 minutes of leisurely walking to get to the top for some excellent views over both north and south coasts and plenty of historical info on the old mining pits and war memorial.

Likewise, the beaches you’ve glimpsed from afar look pretty fab from up close too. The sands of Porthleven, three miles away, are the nearest, and there are plenty of others a short drive away, including Praa Sands and Marazion (from where you can take a boat or cross the causeway to St Michael’s Mount).

Arty types may like to spend a day in St Ives, half an hour’s drive away, taking in the exhibits of Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perhaps less highbrow but equally entertaining are the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek and the rides and attractions at The Flambards Experience, both of which are around a 15-minute drive away.

Must see

  • Flambards (6.2 kilometres)
  • St Michael's Mount (9.7 kilometres)
  • National Seal Sanctuary (9.9 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Godolphin (3.2 kilometres)
  • Penrose Estate: Gunwalloe and Loe Pool (4.2 kilometres)
