Hope Farm Holidays: Views of Cornish mines and the surrounding farmland

General

  • Eco-friendly quiet wild camping, close to the coast at Hayle/Godrevy
  • Wildlife haven overlooking a valley: spot deer, buzzards and rabbits
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed: slabs provided for disposable bbqs

How splendid is this rural spot close to the Cornish coast? So splendid that the family team fortunate enough to live here have been asked for years to open their fields for camping – and how fortunate for all Cornish holidaymakers that they now have: hop along here for eco-friendly stays in a highly quiet setting.

As you'll surmise from the pics, Hope Farm Holidays is in a spectacular setting, in lushly green surrounds with fab vistas over Cornish countryside and farmland. It's in a wildlife haven looking down on a valley: settle yourself down to spy visiting species including deer, buzzards, bats, kestrels, pheasants and rabbits – and do look out too for the resident dogs, cats and chickens…

If/when you're ready to venture off site, the farm is a mere couple of miles from the sands and cliffs of Gwithian beach, close to the Godrevy Heritage Coast and famed Godrevy Point. The South West Coast Path is accessible from this last for hikes along to the surf beach of Portreath; by car, Redruth is 15 minutes' drive away.

Hope Farm is an eco-friendly site, for no-fuss family and backpacker camping among scenic countryside surrounds. It has compost toilets, a washing-up area and a recycling area, along with solar showers (now with extra heat sources to keep the warm water flowing, having been a tad chilly in their opening season). Barbecues and firepits are both allowed: slabs are provided to keep them off the grass, and guests are requested to be vigilant in keeping flames under control.

For supplies, a service station is a few minutes' drive away and Hayle is under 10.

Exceptional campsite, welcoming hosts, practically faultless stay!01/09/2021

Absolutely perfect place to stay. Every pitch has plenty of space so didn't feel cramped, and we were able to park the car on the pitch as well which made this even more desirable (picture shown!). The hosts were very welcoming on arrival with a detailed pack of places to go locally that they recommend, including some stunning beaches, local walks and a farm shop restaurant with some of the biggest and best desserts I've ever had.
Location wise this campsite was perfect, with access to big shops (Lidl & Tesco Extra) and local farm shops no more than 10 minutes away. We enjoyed a trip and even though we got stuck in traffic on the way there the journey back took us around 40 minutes, and lands end was relatively a stone's throw away too!
Being able to have campfires on site was great, we took our firepit along, which I would 100% recommend and used it a both ends of the day for breakfast and dinner (if you prefer not to have a fire and cook your own food there are plenty of local pubs and restaurants nearby to go out to eat and the hosts will give you some suggestions in the pack!). If you don't want to take logs along with you, the campsite have these to purchase along with kindling too for a very reasonable price, and even let us borrow a lighter to start the fire as we ran out of fluid in ours!
The view from the campsite was outstanding and we were lucky to be in the spot we were.
It was nice to see the campsite in touch with the eco side of things with eco toilets (really clean and no problem to use at all!), wild flower meadows, and solar showers. The solar heated showers were a nice addition and even showering at 10pm in the dark they were still perfectly warm and a nice way to end a busy day of walking and beaching!
    Practically faultless stay!

    Disliked:

Not alot to dislike with this campsite, only thing to mention the A30 runs just over the other side of the hill so in the morning and during the day road noise can be a little more noticeable but nothing that would stop me booking here, and at night (importantly!) it was quiet.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us such a detailed review.
We are so glad that you thought our list of cafes and things to do was useful, next year I think we will have a visitors board for guests to put on their favourite place.
Hopefully we will see you again next year.

Noise pollution from main road during night.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us. It was lovely to meet you.
With regard to noise pollution - unfortunately if the wind is blowing across from the A30 there can be road noise, also added to the fact that it is the busiest time for traffic in August the traffic can be heard.
We hope it won't put you off to visit us again

The eco toilets and shower are a great idea!

    Disliked:

The toilets were very small and I'm not a big person, a roof over the washing area would be an improvement as getting wet whilst brushing your teeth isn't ideal!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us.
Also thank you for your feedback about the toilets, unfortunately we had no say in the size when we purchased them but can certainly make them slightly larger when we build new ones.
Next year we will put a roof over the washing areas attached to the showers.
We hope you will visit us again.

From the manager...

Hello Thank you for taking the time to review us.
We are pleased you liked our campsite.
With regard to the toilets, they are compost toilets and not everyone likes them. We use them as it minimises the water used on the campsite and is a way of providing toilet facilities without the plumbing etc.
In the future we are hoping to provide rainwater flush toilets but this is some years away.

Friendly and interesting owners, very accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. I really liked the laid back yet structured campsite organisation. Quiet and clean. Great we could do our own fires too! Eco friendly and no nonsense, suitable facilities. Lovely views and close to St Ives, to the park and ride in St Erth and only 40 minutes from Falmouth, so ideal location. I would absolutely return and recommend :)

Cold showers (it wasnt too bad would just be nice if they were warmer)

From the manager...

Hello - thank you for your review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
We have installed a huge tank to store our warm water but unfortunately we had not had any real sun for over a week when you stayed which meant the showers were colder than we would like.
We are already planning improvements to the system and hope that when we re-open next year we will have an eco-friendly backup if the weather is grey for a long spell.
We hope you will return and the showers will be warmer :)

Local attractions

This is a splendid part of Cornwall, close to the north coast and famed coastal towns, and within easy day-trip distance of Falmouth and the south coast.

The nearest beach, Gwithian, about three miles or 10 minutes' drive away, comes highly recommended by the Hope Farm team for its wide sands and spectacular cliffs: you surely must hike to the top of these to see the hundreds of seals sunbathing below. Hayle, also within 10 minutes, has more wide sands, shopping in the Old Foundry Chapel at the bottom of town, and tiptop Cornish pasties – also highly recommended by the Hope Farm team.

Also much recommended are St Ives (20 minutes' drive, or travel in by train from St Erth or Lelant), and Penzance (25 minutes), for causeway walks to St Michael's Mount, day trips to the Isles of Scilly and open-air dips in the town's restored lido. If you're on your Cornish hol with the kids, Flambards theme park is 25 minutes away.
