General

  • Family-friendly site with lots to do for all ages
  • Dogs welcome, with a dog-walking field on site
  • Heated outdoor pool, paddling pool, playground and games room

Ever felt you really wanted to let loose? And – even better – let the kids run wild while you bask on a sun-soaked terrace in a suntrap valley, sipping a cocktail from the on-site bar? Why, one can almost hear the ice cubes clinking from here…

Don’t get uptight at the thought of Cornwall being crowded in peak season: award-winning and family-friendly Calloose Caravan Park is over eight and a half acres of countryside at Hayles near St Ives, and is designed for those who want to get away from the hordes. And for dogs: the park is dog friendly with fields on site for walkies. Woof.

The park is teeming with things to do: freewheeling sprogs are free to do what they want any old time, with a kids’ paddling pool, playground, multisports and all-weather court, and a games room with pool table, driving and shooting games and gift machines.

Naturally the grownups are smartly catered for too: as well as the spacious sunbathing terrace, non-kids have a heated pool, a bar, a coffee shop, a restaurant, a takeaway and shop for the essentials, and – although the youngsters won’t be interested – a launderette, recycling point opposite the shop and chemical waste points at each toilet block.

The Calloose team prides itself on its customer service and attention to detail, and the entire park is also carefully landscaped to welcome local wildlife and flowers – even the most Xbox-gripped youngster might be persuaded to let loose…

The bar and games room were modern/clean

    Disliked:

Everything else! Small pitch, ours was on a mound! The site wasn’t litterpicked, weeded or checked for noise at night. As for the toilets and showers, they were hideous. Not as advertised, old, damaged, and the dirty floors, doors, ceilings and fixtures were awful. The happy hour is at the wrong time for families getting back from days out/cooking dinner. He bar food is very overpriced. The people next to us had a tv on in their tent loud from the moment they woke up to gone 11pm. Nobody checks the site for noisy inconsiderate people at night. The pool, bar, shop and reception were all closed when it was raining. The pool also doesn’t have anyone monitoring it. Teenagers were bombing right next to little children and jumping over adults heads from the edge and throwing rugby balls at force! There’s also a damaged corner that my son cut his foot on. The photos are clearly photoshopped and not recent from what I can gather. There was also a night the toilets and showers were supposed to be locked as there was a water problem, yet we saw people doing their washing up in the sinks where people wash their faces!
Poorly lit pathway at night meant treading on slugs and dog mess that hadn’t been picked up! Dogs aren’t on leads at all times either!
Ruined our holiday quite honestly. At £45 a night and previous great reviews we expected more.

From the manager...

Thanks for feedback.
I would like to answer some of the points you have made.
We have only refurbished the mens shower block, the pictures you have added are the ladies which I disagree are hideous, however they have now been ripped out and are being refurbished ready for next season.
Happy hour is set to get people into bar at quiet periods and not to suit people when they would come into bar anyway. The food is not overpriced, im not sure where you can get a quality 12ounce steak for £17.50 in many parts of Cornwall, but people don't have to use restaurant its a convenience service.
You are right that we cant stop inconsiderate people making a noise if we are unaware of it but we have security on from 10.30pm to get noise down.
The rain does not stop us from doing anything, the bar shop and pool were open even when it rained, I think there was only 1 day of very heavy rain that we did not open the pool. Most owner are very responsible at picking up dog mess, if its not done all our staff would always clear it up and if you have told anyone of any of your complaints that you find very easy to do online that would have dealt with any issues immediately.
I would assume that you are one of our few guests that would find something to exaggerate and complaints about no matter what.

Playground was great. Pool well nice and warm and well kept. Noise levels were controlled. Washing up room always tidy and plenty of space to stack items and situated in the middle of the site for ease of access. Pitch was a set size and reasonable.

    Disliked:

The family bathroom on the left had a drainage issue and would block up. Also I know the bathrooms were cleaned every morning as you could smell it was clean and see it but it could do with a deep clean as there was built up dirt in corners and on walls and door. Also there wasn't always hand soap and there was one toilet out of order with a notice. I also noticed however that the third toilet had a leak eveytime you flushed which eventually caused water all over the floor. Lastly there was a mouse dead on the last gravel pitch near the toilets and it remained there for a few days. Was still there o. The day we left. I realise it wasn't an occupied pitch but it would have been better not to have to see the poor thing every time I went to the toilet.

The pool area was lovely, our pitch in general was tidy and well kept. Menu looked lovely however we went out every day so didn't eat there. Perfect location for all we wanted to do (Lands End, St. Michael's Mount and Flambards). The play park was very well appreciated by my daughter too!

    Disliked:

Water in the shower cubicles was cold, we did get short amounts of warm water but it definitely didn't ruin our trip!

Directions

Travelling to Calloose is much easier now that you have the M5 to Exeter and a motorway style dual carriageway to Bodmin. There are only 20 miles of ordinary carriageway roads remaining to our park.

Leave the A30 at the roundabout north of Hayle and drive through the town until you see the large viaduct. Drive under the first arch and turn left at the small roundabout and take the B3302 road towards Helston. Leedstown is 3.5 miles along this road. Do not follow your satnav at this point. Just before Leedstown (if coming from Hayle), turn left down Trenerth Road.

Calloose is at the bottom of the hill. Turn left onto the lane where flagpoles and signs are situated. Follow the lane until you reach the caravan park. The reception is signposted.

Calloose is located centrally within west Cornwall. St Ives is only 9 miles away, Penzance only 10 miles, Lizard Point 18 miles, and Newquay only 25 miles away. Please note that public transport is limited in this area of Cornwall.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Pack your wetsuit, your swimsuit, your walking boots and your glad rags to soak up the contrasts of beautiful and active Cornwall, with most of the main attractions within easy driving distance; and eye-watering scenery, coastline and teeny towns and villages all within reach.

You might want to throw your golf clubs and fishing gear into the car boot or caravan too: there are five spectacularly scenic golf clubs within ten miles of Calloose, from the challenging seaside course of the West Cornwall Golf Club three and a half miles away, to England’s most southerly course, Mullion Golf Club at Helston.

Fishing holidays are available all over and easy to arrange, including coarse and reservoir fishing (the rainbow trout-filled waters of Tree Meadow Trout Fishery are just half a mile from Calloose), and sea fishing from a hi-tech boat which can detect passing shoals as well as possible shipwrecks below the surface. Or venture west to the 140 or so islands of the gorgeous Isles of Scilly by ferry from Penzance or air from Penzance or Land’s End to see the capital St Mary’s or the world famous gardens at Tresco.

The beaches of Cornwall are rightly world famous and you could spend your whole hol around the cragged beauty of the north or the subtropical sands of the south. Calloose is centrally based, so pick a beach a day and work on your tan: the Towans at Hayles, three miles of golden sands, are 3.4 miles away; the surf of Praa Sands within six miles and Porthkidney/Lelant beach within seven miles (we strongly recommend some mussel foraging here).

Elsewhere within a quick drive you’ll reach beautiful Marazion – take a trip from here to the island of St Michael’s Mount – and the family-friendly surfing beaches of Portleven and Portreath.

St Ives, Cornwall’s arty capital, is just over nine miles from Calloose: the acclaimed gallery Tate St Ives to see almost 70,000 works of art from 3000 artists, including the national collection of British art. Nearby Newlyn is also known for its art and its 19th-century off with a visit to the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno, carved from the clifftop and with the feel of a Roman amphitheatre.
