Pioneer Billys: All lit up

General

  • No-frills campsite on a farm five minutes' drive from the A30
  • A 35-minute drive to St Ives; Newquay surfing beaches 30 minutes
  • Farm animals, shower facilities and King Edward Mine Museum views

Pioneer Billys is a laidback Cornwall campsite in eight acres of countryside on a working farm, right next to the King Edward Mine Museum and a short walk from the Great Flat Lode Trail (both great ways to get to grips with this area's industrial history).

This is a peaceful hideaway for families, walkers, mountain bikers and nature lovers – in fact anybody who fancies chilling for a few days around a campfire. The farm is home to the Garwood family, as well as Derek the donkey, Muffin the Shetland pony and friendly pygmy goats. There’s plenty of local wildlife in the fields too, and popular Cornish beaches like Portreath and Gwithian are within 20 minutes' drive.

It's only a five-minute drive to Camborne's shops for bits and pieces to grill on the barbecue (bring your own equipment from home), but if you’d like a break from cooking, there are loads of traditional Cornish pubs, restaurants and takeaways within a few minutes' drive too. The site is a five-minute drive from the A30, so getting out and about to the various corners of Cornwall should be a doddle.

Bit of a slope to pitches but not a big problem.27/09/2021

Easy to find. Nice small site. Very friendly welcome. Good size pitch. Toilet/shower very clean. I expect there would be a wait for facilities when busy as only 2 bathrooms and no separate toilets. All in all a very nice stay for one night to visit family. We will definitely return as it’s just down the road from where we need to visit and near to local amenities.

Extremely friendly hosts. Went out of their way to accommodate and advise us on surfing destinations during our our stay. The cat was a lovely asset, but betrayed us for other campers.
