  • No-frills campsite on a farm five minutes’ drive from the A30
  • A half-hour’s drive from St Ives and Newquay’s surfing beaches
  • Animals, Great Flat Lode Trail access, King Edward Mine Museum views
A laidback Cornwall campsite in eight acres of countryside on a working farm, Pioneer Billys is right next to the King Edward Mine Museum and a short walk from the Great Flat Lode Trail (both great ways to get to grips with this area’s industrial history). This is a peaceful hideaway for families, walkers, mountain bikers and nature lovers – in fact anybody who fancies chilling for a few days around a campfire. The farm is home to the Garwood family, as well as Derek the donkey, Muffin the Shetland pony and friendly pygmy goats. There’s plenty of local wildlife in the fields too, and several popular Cornish beaches are within 20 minutes’ drive. It’s only a five-minute drive to Camborne’s shops for bits and pieces to grill on the barbecue (bring your own gear from home), but if you’d like a break from cooking, there are loads of traditional Cornish pubs, restaurants and takeaways within a few minutes’ drive too. The site is a five-minute drive from the A30, so getting out and about to the various corners of Cornwall should be a doddle.

Local attractions

At Pioneer Billys, you have many options for days at the seaside. Watch the kids swim in the sheltered tidal pool at Portreath beach (15 minutes’ drive), or learn to windsurf at Gwithian (20 minutes), backed by dunes and rockpools. You may spot grey seals at Godrevy beach (20 minutes), and other local options include the surfing beaches at Perranporth (25 minutes) and lively Newquay (half an hour). Anyone with even a passing interest in Cornwall’s mining heritage should consider having a nose around the King Edward Mine Museum (10 minutes’ walk), with its working mining equipment, while the circular Great Flat Lode Trail is accessible direct from the campsite and passes South Wheal Frances and Dolcoath Mine (both five minutes) as it follows an old mining tramway. Fans of modern art can get onto the A30 (five minutes’ drive) and head for St Ives (30 minutes) for the treasures in Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden – there are loads of indie galleries to check out in the town too, as well as seafront walks and cosy pubs.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: We received a really warm welcome upon arrival - the owner is a really lovely, down-to-earth lady - we could have stayed chatting to her all night! The toilets and showers were very clean. Really decent showers providing hot water so you can actually get clean! The goats were really friendly & provided us with entertainment. Stunning location with some nice views, not too far from shops etc.

Disliked: The donkey & the pony had gone, but after hearing their story, it is nice to know they ended up in a good home together!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very welcoming host, massive pitches with grass that had been cut but also collected which I feel is a massive bonus. The pitch wasn’t level so definitely needed levellers.
Facilities, although dated were spotless. Hot shower, in fact it was too hot and I couldn’t seem to make it cooler!
