  • Wild camping on a farm 15 minutes' drive from North Cornwall’s beaches
  • St Michael's Mount 20 minutes’ drive; St Ives 25 minutes
  • Easy access from the A30; Camborne town five minutes’ drive
For a back-to-basics holiday in Cornwall, consider Parkwithian Camping – it's on a farm just off the A30 road, which means you won’t have to negotiate narrow tracks and muddy lanes to get to where you’re going. The town of Camborne, just across the A30, has several supermarkets, restaurants and pubs – in other words, all the amenities you would expect (and probably need when wild camping). Despite its proximity to the main road, this family-friendly pop-up site feels suitably remote and peaceful, immersed as it is in a rural landscape of rolling fields. A 10-minute drive takes you to Tehidy Woods, where you can stroll along clifftop paths or check out the wildlife near the lakes. As great as woodland hiking is, this is Cornwall, and chances are you’re here to explore this county’s coastline. For those who are into their watersports, sandy Gwithian beach (15 minutes) is renowned for its blue waters and excellent surf. For a more intimate beach experience, Portreath (10 minutes) is sheltered by cliffs at its western end and has rockpools for the kids to splash around in. A 20-minute drive takes you to the south coast and Marazion beach, where, at low tide, you can walk on a granite causeway to St Michael’s Mount, a rocky island topped by a castle. Although there are no showers on site, there is a portable toilet and a water supply. In addition, the owners are happy to share their knowledge of the local area, whether it be restaurants or places to visit.

Local attractions

Created in the 16th century, National Trust - Godolphin (15 minutes’ drive) is a garden with an orchard, beehives and a walled area full of fragrant flowers. If you feel active, you can climb Godolphin Hill. At the top, you’ll be rewarded by views of both the north and south coasts of Cornwall, from St Ives to St Michael’s Mount. A haven for artists since the early 1800s, the coastal town of St Ives (25 minutes) is still renowned for its galleries. You can check out the modern works on display at Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, or simply stroll around the quaint town centre eating an ice cream – but beware the local seagulls: they’re a ravenous lot. There are also a handful of good beaches here, plus fishing trips and sea safaris. Looking for something to keep the kids happy? Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) has hair-raising rides like a drop tower, a roller coaster and a water chute; younger children might prefer gentler amusements like the classic carousel. There is also a recreated Victorian village with a cobbled street and a horse-drawn carriage.
