Atlantic Surf Pods: Well-kept gardens around the pods

General

  • Luxury glamping site over 26 acres on the north Cornish coast
  • A mile from the surfing beaches of Bude
  • Pods with kingsize bed, private wetroom and decking/outdoor furniture

Surf’s up in style at Atlantic Surf Pods, a smart north Cornwall glamping site a mile from the breakers down at the beaches around Bude.

Wielding a surfboard is a mighty popular activity around these parts, but it’s not compulsory: feel free to shun the sea completely if you wish, for these pods are in a handy spot (just off the A39 main road) for plenty of other antics including horse riding, golf and bike outings.

The folk at this friendly family-run site have clearly put a bit of thought into what one might need after a day out on the waves: each of the luxury pods has a decked area with outdoor furniture, a gas barbecue and a giant beanbag on which to flop with a beer. If you’re a tad chilly and windswept, warm up with a shower in your private external wetroom or set off to the nearby bathroom block to soak in the full-size bath. There’s also a large mirror here, with electric points for barnet-taming devices.

A ball game area and playground are on site to keep travelling tiddlers entertained, and the neighbouring field is filled with farm animals that are extra friendly if you nip over with a bag of feed. On less clement days, retreat to the shell craft studio to unleash your decorative streak.

Just in need of a peaceful night’s sleep? They’ve done their best to make that happen too – comfy kingsize memory foam beds, underfloor heating and 26 acres of surrounding farmland should hopefully be a winning combo…

Nice pod, stayed acceptably cool despite the very hot weather and south facing aspect. Nice to have our own toilet and shower and the children (aged 3 and 5) loved sleeping on the huge bean bags (much better than camp beds). Good facilities to self cater with a gas BBQ that doubles as a gas hob as well as a fridge, kettle and toaster.

    Disliked:

We had some issues with the shower temperature but once reported the owner quickly attended and sorted it out.

Brilliant time had by all. The site is clean and child friendly. Cars are not allowed by the pods but are parked at the end of the path, which makes it extremely safe for children to play. We took our 2 grandchildren and they loved it. There is a small playground and a farm on site. The resident peacock roams around and let’s you know he is there which was quite funny. The pods are very spacious and clean, with kettle toaster, fridge and plates, cups, glasses and utensils provided. Cooking is done by a gas barbecue (gas is provided by the site, and is hooked up and ready to go) we used this every day. The beaches are very close to the site. Our favourites were Widecome and Crockets. Washing facilities are in your own little shed at the side of the pod. The shower is warm. Shops are also close to the site, they do have their own little shop onsite as well. Kids slept on giant bean bags and adults had a king sized bed, which was very comfortable. We had a ball here and will definitely return, with other members of our family. Thanks for the memories

    Disliked:

Bit dark when using the toilet at night. Although you are provided with a torch. Not much space to prep food, could do with a small table inside the pod, there is room to accommodate one.

Lovely cosy pod, underfloor heating was luxurious! Plenty of space, great to have a small fridge, toaster and kettle.
Very comfy bed, the bean bags were OK for small children but I would recommend taking a air bed for 10+ year olds.
Gas BBQ was great, we were lucky with the weather!

    Disliked:

We were a little disappointed with the shower temp!

The bed was really comfty. And with gaps in the door it was surprisingly warm. The perfect temperature..

    Disliked:

Lighting outside pod and the path could of been better.. and as it only a bbq to cook on some sort of canopy from the rain.. could of had a bigger kitchen area inside nowhere to prepare anything.. maybe a microwave so could at least cook a meal.

We stayed in a pod with our 7 year son, and it was a nice break despite the weather not being very holiday-like.

There are lots of positives about the place. The pods are very spacious, the way they are located in clusters makes it easy for kids and adults to make friends, fun landscaped gardens (reminded us of Teletubbies) are good spaces for playing, and it was nice to have cooking facilities.

    Disliked:

The thing that was not great was the child's bed. It was a large beanbag which people also use for sitting in the garden. Our son was actually quite upset by it and kept sobbing at bedtime, asking why he has to sleep like a dog while his parents have a lovely proper bed. We had no answer to that, and couldn't swap with him as the beanbag wasn't big enough for an adult.

Eventually he would fall asleep on it, and sleep through the night ok, but the preceding questions every evening, and trying to reassure him that we are not treating him like a dog (and it is in fact super fun sleeping on a beanbag?), was not the best part of our holiday.

Also it's impossible to fix any bedding to this beanbag so our son was sleeping in a sleeping bag on it, with his face touching the beanbag when he turned..One wonders how hygienic that might be, given the beanbags are often used on the decking and in the garden, with people treading on them etc...

Elsewhere, the shower hanging over the basin and toilet was a bit odd, and also not very hot, while the "posh" communal bathroom had a sign saying people couldn't use it (without explanation). It was still open though and people did seem to be using it, so that was confusing.

And there's no recycling apart from mixed glass so we collected and washed out our tins, plastics and tetrapaks in vain.

Local attractions

So, to the surf: Bude’s got a well-deserved rep for being one of Britain’s best places to hit the waves. Keen boarders may like to head to Widemouth Bay (five minutes’ drive) or Crooklets (10 minutes); those needing a little more novice-friendly should start out at Summerleaze (10 minutes). Not got the knack yet? There are plenty of surf schools around to give you a hand.

It’s not all about the surfing here – Bude’s quite the hub for outdoor activities of all kinds: coasteering, paddleboarding, sea fishing, golf and beach horse rides are all in town, and the scenic South West Coast Path passes through for sea-view strolls (pack your swimmers if you’re planning a lengthy hike, so you can cool off with a dip in the Bude Sea Pool upon return).

The surrounds are stacked with attractions too: chuck the nippers in the car for days out at the Milky Way Adventure Park (half an hour’s drive) or the Big Sheep theme park (40 minutes), take a ride on the Launceston Steam Railway (half an hour), or potter around pretty Pencarrow House (40 minutes).
