General

  • Family-run farm site
  • A mile from the beaches and town centre of Bude
  • Animals to feed and a shell craft studio on site

If you're staying close to Cornish beaches, you might want to do something with your seashells. Such is the state of affairs at Atlantic Camping near Bude, a site so family-friendly it's set up its own shell craft studio for small (and big) sorts to craft their foraged shells into ornaments or use them to decorate bits and pieces like pots, mirrors and picture frames.

And the kids might like the menagerie in the adjacent field too. Greeting – and feeding – the chickens, turkeys, geese, sheep, three alpacas and a donkey all living right next to the site are usually a big hit with small guests: just ask a member of staff for feed if you want to dispense dinner.

Atlantic Camping is a family-run farm campsite, set within 26 acres of farmland, a mile from the surfing beaches of north Cornwall's Bude. The farm entrance is set directly on the Atlantic Highway (the A39, the main road past Bude) so is easily accessible to all vehicle types, but the campsite part is set well back from the road on the other side of the farm: no traffic noise here.

The planted-out pitches are set among two and a half acres of well-mown grass, with a climbing frame and ball game area for the kids. Amenities include a washing-up area with four sinks, and a toilet and shower block with six showers and seven toilets, including a disabled toilet and one with baby-changing facilities.

The pubs, restaurants and attractions of Bude town centre are a 20-minute walk from the farm: bring a torch if you're coming or going at night.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

    Price and the view.

Everything else! Arrived at 2.10pm to find no one around. (Even though webaute stated reception was open from 2-6) Phoned number on the website, 6 times before anyone answered! Said they were offsite for lunch, were rude and had no idea i'd even made an online booking! Told me to just pitch up where I wanted and they would come and see us later. Well we spent the entire Monday to Friday there without seeing a single person who worked there. No idea where anything was, had to find toilets etc ourselves! Campsite was slanted, toilets and showers in a shed type outhouse, woken up by noisy animals every morning and just felt so unwelcomed.

From the manager...

The guests arrived before 2.The phones were on answer machine between 1-2. We were off site for lunch, took the call just after 2 and explained that due to the cafe being busy Easter Monday we were unavoidably delayed and politely asked them to go to the pitch as it was ready and clearly marked with numbers. They were told that this time of the year they could change to another pitch if they wished. We are only a small campsite but the seven toilets and seven showers cannot be missed. The guests were checked on our return and were settled in. We had no reason to disturb them. In the four days they did not come to the reception once. I feel the review is exaggerated, purely over the issue of staff being delayed from lunch. Our site has a gentle south facing slope, we are a basic site which is reflected in the low prices.

Shouldnt be accepting bookings for tents in the winter. 11/02/2018

Beautifully landscaped park and well set up pitches

    Disliked:

seems far more of a caravan and motorhome park than aimed at tents, about 60 caravan sized pitches with hookups but only a couple of toilets each foe men and women and couple of showers, all very rustic and basic, log cabin built, no hand dryers or hair drying fascilities, not enough for 60 pitches if they dont have their own loo's.

to make it worse the "camping/caravanng' field water was off for the winter, understandable.. but theyn why take bookings? I was asked to use shower/loo added onto the back of the house 200m from pitch. Freezing cold, no heat, shower doors didnt shut and came off runners, water came up the wet room drain in the floor, no hand or hair dryer.. tough for camping in February.

Honest opinion.. shouldnt be accepting bookings for tents in the winter.

They moved our entire tent and belongings, while we were gone! 06/04/2018

If I could give a negative rating for my experience at Atlantic Camping, I would. My holiday was ruined by the monster that owns this site. Upon arrival I must admit we were impressed with the appearance of the site, the bright flowers and gardens look lovely as you approach the pitches and make you excited to get pitched up and make yourself at home. We set up camp, as you do, on a pitch that was allocated to us by a member of staff. The following morning, another member of staff approached us and asked us to move our tent to another pitch - we of course politely declined as we had already set up our six man tent, set up our living quarters etc. and it would be too much of a job to relocate to a different pitch - you know the drill fellow campers. The staff member agreed, told us to stay where we were and walked off. We went out for the day, to enjoy our holiday and to our surprise, when we came back to the camp site, we pulled up next to our pitch and noticed a tent that wasn't ours! As you can imagine, to say that we were confused is an understatement. We left the tent in a pitch in the morning, came back in the evening and our tent had gone! After searching the camp site we eventually found our tent - yes, the owner had moved our tent and its whole entire contents/our belongings while we were gone! We of course went to see the owner to ask why on earth this had been done, not only without our permission, but while we were gone and also after a member of staff had already told us we could stay where we were originally put! The owner didn't apologise once, instead he threatened to call the police if we didn't leave the site all together! It was supposed to be my birthday and not only did I have my privacy breached by the owner of the site entering my tent without my permission while I was gone, but he also moved my tent, the contents inside the tent (my belongings) and now he has the cheek to try and kick me off the site entirely! I immediately burst into tears, frustrated and confused as to what was happening - here I am, a young 23 year old girl being aggressively shouted at, threatened, confused, frustrated and heart broken if I'm honest - it was supposed to be my birthday! I insisted that he continue to call the police as he would find himself in breach, not me. I didn't do anything, I went to Bude for the day and came back to see that my possessions had been moved without my consent. With all the commotion (the owner shouting and hurling abuse at me), the owners wife came to the rescue - she was apologetic and couldn't believe what her husband had done as was doing to me. She agreed that the way he was talking to me was completely unacceptable and asked him to leave the room so she could apologise to us properly. She asked us very nicely not to write a bad review on here but how could I not? The owner is a monster, the owners wife on the other hand is much nicer but I would not recommend this site to anyone after the service I have received.

The toilet/shower facilities aren't clean, they're full of dead insects, never any toilet roll and you can forget having any hand wash. The toilet doors are incredibly noisy, if somebody goes to the loo of a night time, you'll know exactly when they've entered and exactly when they've left.

Avoid at all costs! (Unless you want to have your tent and belongings moved without your permission while you're out enjoying your day. Or, unless you fancy being shouted at by a nasty old man who will have you in tears after ten minutes of his rudeness)

Local attractions

The beaut beaches of Bude are rightly famed for their golden sands, clean water and surfing breaks: get along to Summerleaze and Crooklets within Bude for surf, and to the National Trust-managed Sandymouth for a quieter vibe via its steep ravine.

The long sands and popular surfing waves of Widemouth Bay are a few miles from Bude, Crackington Haven is within eight miles, and the family-friendly beach of Northcott Mouth is a top spot nearby for rockpooling.

In Bude town, spend a morning wandering around the harbour and Bude's buildings including the oldest in town, Quay Cottage, and the heritage centre now housed in Bude Castle. Then, perhaps, a pint, lunch or pasty before tackling the local stretch of the also-famed South West Coast Path, from Bude Canal to Crackington Haven, and then further south to Boscastle and Tintagel…?

Horse riding, cycling, ten-pin bowling, fishing, tennis and golf are all available in the region too: ask the Atlantic Camping team for its top tips.
