General

  • Family-run farm site
  • A mile from the beaches and town centre of Bude
  • Animals to feed and a shell craft studio on site

If you're staying close to Cornish beaches, you might want to do something with your seashells. Such is the state of affairs at Atlantic Camping near Bude, a site so family-friendly it's set up its own shell craft studio for small (and big) sorts to craft their foraged shells into ornaments or use them to decorate bits and pieces like pots, mirrors and picture frames.

And the kids might like the menagerie in the adjacent field too. Greeting – and feeding – the chickens, turkeys, geese, sheep, three alpacas and a donkey all living right next to the site are usually a big hit with small guests: just ask a member of staff for feed if you want to dispense dinner.

Atlantic Camping is a family-run farm campsite, set within 26 acres of farmland, a mile from the surfing beaches of north Cornwall's Bude. The farm entrance is set directly on the Atlantic Highway (the A39, the main road past Bude) so is easily accessible to all vehicle types, but the campsite part is set well back from the road on the other side of the farm: no traffic noise here.

The planted-out pitches are set among two and a half acres of well-mown grass, with a climbing frame and ball game area for the kids. Amenities include a washing-up area with four sinks, and a toilet and shower block with six showers and seven toilets, including a disabled toilet and one with baby-changing facilities.

The pubs, restaurants and attractions of Bude town centre are a 20-minute walk from the farm: bring a torch if you're coming or going at night.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Well kept site, generous pitch size, helpful email detailing pitch and advising to go straight to it if we didn't need any assistance, working facilities, a member of staff coming to find me with the groundsheet I ordered and had delivered to the site.

Honesty shop with ice block freezing facility and most things well signposted...

    Disliked:

Davros and Katie Hopkins patrolling the site at 22.00 informing anyone that dare speak above a whisper that SILENCE MEANS SILENCE whilst shining a bright torch in your face....

Seriously, I could understand if we were having a massive party but we weren't, just a small group of people sitting around a bbq having a chat after some freshly caught fish, another couple not far from us had family members staying in the surf pods and they had to come up to the grass campsite as campsite guests are not allowed to socialize at the surfpods, they were also told that silence means silence and as a result their family returned to the surf pods in disbelief at how they had been spoken to..

Davros, who I assume is the owner scooting about the site in an electric buggy is extremely rude labeling us "a pain in the arse" and at one point demanding our friends tent be taken down immediately. As it happens they went home as they only live round the corner and the actions of the owners ruined the kids treat of a night under the stars with their friends from London...

Check ALL the rules before you book, I didn't, if I had I would have been put off and gone elsewhere, I won't be coming back which is a shame as you have a beautiful site with a horrendous ogre for an owner.....

Atlantic Camping, do yourself a favour and address how the owner speaks to guests, look up diplomacy, the way we were spoken to on our last night far outweighed the great customer service we received before and on arrival...

From the manager...

Calls from campers being disturbed led us to go to the site only to find a large group starting a fire at 10pm forming a rowdy gathering, inviting non campers to join them. This site is for camping guests only. As a family site it is just unacceptable for a disregard of others enjoyment and safety.

Facilities aren't great. Not very clean. Cold water in toilets. Showers kept running out of hot water. Hard to walk anywhere as of main roads.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, you can walk out of the farm for 3 miles without meeting a main road, you can get to the beach or follow the old canal path, or you can walk to the ancient village of Stratton . There are also signposts from the drive to direct you to Bude on pavements and without going on the main road (although you do have to cross the A39 once).

Our facilities are simple but are clean and tidy. We are a basic family run farm campsite.

Thank for the comments. The showers at the top don't have lights as they are only in use in the summer months but the toilets do.

At the bottom there are lights in every unit.

Thanks for your comments. The bins are emptied daily and the toilets cleaned twice a day. When we have guests who abuse the toilets and it is reported to us we do re-clean if necessary as quickly as we can.

Dangerous road to cross.... Nightmare of a road to walk down to get to Bude... We ended up driving every where purely to increase our life expectencey.
Traffic noise... Not bad but present.

From the manager...

You can reach Bude without going on the main road. We signpost the footpath up the inside of the farm hedge. Then you cross the A39 where the visibility is very good. After that it is though an industrial estate and pavement all the way, with more signposting from us.

If you don't follow these instructions the road is very dangerous.

Local attractions

The beaut beaches of Bude are rightly famed for their golden sands, clean water and surfing breaks: get along to Summerleaze and Crooklets within Bude for surf, and to the National Trust-managed Sandymouth for a quieter vibe via its steep ravine.

The long sands and popular surfing waves of Widemouth Bay are a few miles from Bude, Crackington Haven is within eight miles, and the family-friendly beach of Northcott Mouth is a top spot nearby for rockpooling.

In Bude town, spend a morning wandering around the harbour and Bude's buildings including the oldest in town, Quay Cottage, and the heritage centre now housed in Bude Castle. Then, perhaps, a pint, lunch or pasty before tackling the local stretch of the also-famed South West Coast Path, from Bude Canal to Crackington Haven, and then further south to Boscastle and Tintagel…?

Horse riding, cycling, ten-pin bowling, fishing, tennis and golf are all available in the region too: ask the Atlantic Camping team for its top tips.
