Orchard Springs Campsite: Lots of room

General

  • A country escape 30 minutes’ walk from the centre of Bodmin
  • A 20-minute drive from the Eden Project; 35 mins from Truro
  • Individual luxury shower rooms; on-site shop and bakery

Cornwall may be famed for its savoury pasties, but you can expect an altogether sweeter treat when you stay at Orchard Springs Campsite. The two-acre site is on the outskirts of the town of Bodmin, but green fields and an orchard and stream give it a country escape feel.

The centre of Bodmin is less than two miles from Orchard Springs, and Bodmin Jail, Cornwall’s Regimental Museum, the Bodmin Town Museum and Bodmin’s Obelisk are all within 35 minutes’ walk of the site. Bodmin also has plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants where you can pick up souvenirs and supplies, scull some local brews or have a taste of Cornish cuisine.

If you’re not feeling up to the trip into Bodmin, an on-site shop in the reception hut has the basics you’ll need, as well as some Orchard Springs home-baked bread and pastries. A campers’ kitchen with microwave, fridge freezer and ice blocks is also available for guests’ use.

A toilet block built by local craftspeople rounds out facilities, with individual shower rooms giving you a little extra privacy during your stay.

Orchard Springs Campsite opened in 2018: its owners spent the 10 years before that running another successful site in the region.

Great site, great location, level pitches, peaceful & clean18/09/2022

What a fantastic gem I found here, a quiet well kept clean site. Having stayed at a different location in Cornwall only a few weeks previously, I was extremely pleased to see flat and marked out pitches, with plenty of room for our 6 berth tent and porch.
The site owners were welcoming and friendly, and the facilities were very clean, an indoor and outdoor dishwashing facility, along with a kettle and microwave to use. The shower rooms are your own clean private bathroom.
One of the greatest things about the site is it's location, there is much to do and see in Bodmin, but within 30 minutes in any direction, you can be paddle boarding, on the beach or even trying out a Segway, or in one of the other large and vibrant towns nearby. After a busy and fun day it was great to go back to this great little site, tucked away in a remote and beautiful spot. If you don't want the hustle and bustle of a commercial large site, you will love this one.

    Disliked:

The only thing I didn't like, was jus a personal preference, the shower head hits the shower screen in front, rather than being pointed towards the centre of the shower tray.

Liked the slightly more isolated location, very cosy inside, well decorated and surprisingly kept in the heat well! Toilets nearby were convenient and always clean as were the showers.

    Disliked:

Struggled to maintain a WiFi connection at all times, no obviously apparent cooking facilities - we found a table top hob under the bed on our second day, fridge was very small.

Quiet campsite conveniently positioned for visiting all the areas attractions, most of which within a 30 minute drive. Toilets/showers were clean and spacious. Washing facilities had plenty of hot water. The kitchen even had a kettle, a microwave and a freezer for freeze blocks.
The owners were on site every day. Each morning they were available to cook bread and pastries to order at a very reasonable price and on Friday evenings they made the most amazing pizzas.

    Disliked:

Wifi was too weak for it to be used on my phone for the entire stay and my son only managed to use it for one hour on our first day.

This was such a great site for me and my family. It was small and felt really safe. It wasn’t too busy which was perfect for my younger children and it was really quiet which we appreciated immensely with little ones. David and Emma were so friendly and helpful. You can hear and just see the odd steam train go past on the horizon. There is no light pollution and we loved looking at all the stars and planets as a family. The pitches are big, flat and well spaced. The facilities are clean and well appointed. The washing up sinks are a good height so you don’t break your back bending over! Wood fired pizza on Saturday night was delicious and good value as were the freshly baked croissants each morning!
The campsite is in a great location to use as a base to explore Cornwall from with everything being a 20-40 minute drive away!

    Disliked:

The road round the site wasn’t one way and I think this would make it feel even safer for families with children out playing

Local attractions

Fans of the BBC’s Poldark will recognise some of the place names in the area around Orchard Springs: the towns of Bodmin and Truro are close by, with Bodmin a short walk from the site and Truro a 35-minute drive. Poldark is synonymous with lingering shots of the Cornish moors, and tours can take you to some of the coves and mines that bring the show to life.

This area of Cornwall has a lot more to it than filming locations. The Eden Project, a 20-minute drive away, is a top spot to get up close with nature in the outdoor gardens and tropical and Mediterranean biomes or, if you’re feeling brave, have a go on England’s longest zipwire.

The Eden Project looks to the future, but if you’d prefer to dig around in the past there are plenty of historic sites close by. Get a feel for Victorian life at Lanhydrock House and Gardens, a 15-minute drive from Orchard Springs; a look at the Elizabethan era at Prideaux Place, 30 minutes away, or head back to Georgian times at Pencarrow, 10 minutes from the site.

If the zip wire at the Eden Project got you geared up for a more active break, you can cycle or walk the Camel Trail – which passes through Bodmin on its way towards the fishing port of Padstow on the northern Cornish coast – or take to the seas at one of the highly-rated surfing beaches nearby.

Must see

  • Eden Project (6.2 miles)
  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (8.5 miles)
  • Rock Beach (10.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps (12.7 miles)
  • Trerice (14.0 miles)
