  • Rural family-run site on a farm on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Lanhydrock House and Restormel Castle
  • Playing field, nature trail and animals to feed on site
Sort yourself a serene stay in Cornwall at Gwel-an-Nans Farm, a site in a secluded spot south west of Bodmin Moor and less than a 15-minute drive from the town of the same name. Pull up and you’ll get a sunny welcome from Gerald and Sheila, the couple who run this two and a half-acre park in the middle of a bigger animal-filled farm. These friendly folk are joined by two equally friendly donkeys who are always happy to meet any small explorers you're bringing along – give them a wave while running off to the separate enclosed field for games of football and bike riding. This is a spectacular park for thrillseeking as well as lazing about, with the moor right outside the entrance for mountain biking, and off-road paths over in Cardinham Woods less than a 10-minute drive away. Keen freewheelers can take on the famed Bodmin Beast as well as a couple of other tricky red-grade trails. Along with pedalling on the 18-mile Camel Trail, family-friendly touring on two wheels is to be had at the National Trust’s Lanhydrock House estate less than a 10-minute drive. And if you’d rather roam, ask Gerald and Sheila about the two-mile nature trail leading down to a hidden wooded valley back on site or set off on a circular saunter around the round walls of Restormel Castle 15 minutes’ drive... Reckon you’ll be famished on your return? Supermarkets, restaurants and pubs are over in Bodmin – check out local sights like the jail, regimental museum and obelisk while you’re in the area too.

What customers say

This is a small, friendly, and well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches and excellent facilities. Visitors consistently praise the owners' warmth and helpfulness, often highlighting Norma's personal touches like homemade pasties and coffees. The peaceful location, close to Cardinham Woods, is ideal for walks and cycling. While the limited number of showers and toilets for the site's size has been noted, most guests found it manageable due to the site's generally quiet nature. The presence of friendly donkeys is a popular bonus for many.

Liked Now I was worried about staying here as we always stuck to the same campsite well wish we had stayed here earlier it was exactly what we needed a nice quiet small site with absolutely fantastic hosts who can not do enough for you now don't let the lack of toilets and showers put you off we were there 7 days I think I waited five minutes at the most to take a shower and the site was quite full it's all about timing they are very clean the games field is a reasonable size for football or badminton which is great you don't have balls flying around your tent and after 10 is quiet time so if you have little ones this is great there's donkeys for you to feed and the best dog kc will let the owners know you need them with a little bark but she is an absolute sweetie when you give her a cuddle I would 100% stay here again

Disliked Having to leave

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked This is our third stay at Gwel-an-Nans and we’ve booked in again for next year. The site is perfect for families who don’t like the busy, noisy sites and just want to enjoy a peaceful, friendly holiday. There is an open field for children to play in which is perfect for kite flying, football or just running around to burn off some energy! There is one toilet/shower for the women and one toilet/shower for the men then a shared toilet/disabled in the middle of the block but don’t let that put you off because we have never waited long to use the facilities, you just need to time it right (it’s mainly the mornings which are busiest) but then the site doesn’t have many units so it’s never busy. Norma is a brilliant host and extremely friendly and helpful. Make sure to take advantage of her cooking as her pasties/sausage rolls and bacon and cheese turnovers are amazing and also this year she has a new trailer which she is serving good coffees and milkshakes from. There are also two donkeys on the site which the kids love and are very friendly. The pitches themselves are well kept and level and the grass is always maintained. The site is roughly 30-40 minutes drive from the main beaches like Perranporth, Newquay and Padstow which are easy to get to via the A30. The site is very popular with the same families returning each year which tells you all you need to know because you wouldn’t return somewhere if you didn’t fully enjoy it. We can’t wait to visit again next summer!

Liked Terrible place

Disliked The lady was so rude, dog chained up outside house barking, when we turned up with our campervan we were told we could not put a 2 man tent up for your older girls to sleep in next to campervan!!only small as travelling around so didn’t want to put up awning as only staying 2 days!! They would have to be 20 meters away from campervan. My daughter is 17 with special needs and she didn’t care and said they would have to be in the other corner of field that’s the rule if you don’t like it there’s nothing I can do!! So we didn’t stay!! I would not recommend this campsite! The lady has a sign outside saying it’s with the camping & caravan club but when I mentioned we are members she said we are not in the book!! So why have a sign outside. Rude and not helpful

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely small quiet place. The bench with every pitch was great! We received a very friendly welcome, the coffee served at the place was an extra bonus, and my daughter loved the milkshakes!
Only one shower and toilet for ladies and one for men, but because the place is so small it wasn't an issue at all, and it was spotless clean.
My daughter loved the donkeys, we fed them every morning!

Disliked I only had one issue, I booked the place because of how many trees were there, I was hoping we will get some shade. The tent pitch area is on the field next to the donkeys, the sun hits the area from about 12 all day. Where we were they was a tree, it gave some shade until noon but after it's full sun. On a rainy or cold day it's a bonus but it was a hot weekend, we tried to place the tent to give us some shade during the day. But this not an issue that can be fox really, it was just my personal issue, I can't stay out on the sun for too long.

Local attractions

Cornwall’s Eden Project is 25 minutes from the site for perusing plants from different environments and climates under two biomes set in an old china clay pit; if you’re into your landscaping, the pristine nature around Pencarrow House (also 25 minutes away) and the 200 acres of outdoor space at The Lost Gardens of Heligan (45 minutes) are well worth a look too. Seeking surf? The waves of Watergate Bay, Fistral beach and Holywell Bay are all 40 minutes from the site if you’ve a wetsuit and board to hand, while kayak rental can be had at Polkerris beach 35 minutes' drive away. Sort other watersports inland at Siblyback Lake (half an hour), where raft building, paddleboarding and fishing are all available. Golitha Falls (20 minutes from the site) is on the way too.
