Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loads of space and didn’t feel crowded. Friendly staff and back to nature feel.

Disliked: Chose this site as had a no music polity but that didn’t turn out to be the case in practice. Loud music until 11pm on our visit

From the manager: Thanks for your review and pleased to hear your enjoyed the space and back to nature feel. We just wanted to clarify one thing, on the weekend you stayed the music was not from our campsite but a neighbouring property hosting a 21st Birthday Party, something that unfortunately was beyond our control. Our night warden was onsite and could hear the music you referred to but unfortunately as it was not any of our campers or occurring on our property he was not able to do anything to stop it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great campsite, well organised with good, basic facilities. We visited as part of a group of 4 families enjoying a Father's Day camping weekend. The kids enjoyed exploring the woods, and there was plenty of space for everyone to have their group pitch without being crowded by a neighbouring group.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really liked the site which is really well laid out in a beautiful setting with plenty of space for everyone’s pitch to enjoy. It’s got a relaxed atmosphere and has great facilities and allows a fire and logs can be purchased upon entry. It’s a lovely space to get away from everything for a while hassle free.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic, spacious site. Clean, warm showers, clean toilets. Lovely, friendly, helpful staff. Firewood, kindling etc available to purchase (really reasonable) and marshmallows (to the delight of my children!) will be returning. Peaceful setting. Just the switch off we needed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Stayed at Hook Farm campsite with my elder son. Very warm welcome and a beautiful campsite in the rolling Weald countryside. Toilets, showers and water on-site but otherwise a really good near-wild camping experience. Plenty of space. No music rule worked for us. Basic but perfect if that's what you want. We will definitely visit again.

Disliked: No issues with the campsite at all, but the two pubs in West Hoathly / Sharpthorne are closed altogether some days and may have early closing.

Local attractions

As might have been mentioned, Hook Farm is in an enviable location enveloped by the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; several walking trails and bridleways linking Weald villages and through splendid scenery lead directly from the site. Brighton is less than 20 miles away too for city days or nights out. Recommended options in the region include the colourful steam railway ride from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park on the Bluebell Railway, an 11-mile journey along the border between East and West Sussex, or wildlife watching at one or more of the Weald's couple of dozen nature and RSPB reserves. Ardingly Reservoir, close to Hook Farm, also has yachting, sailing, canoeing and hooking samples in pike, carp, tench, coarse and match fishing. At Ardingly village less than a mile from the farm, the National Trust's Wakehurst Gardens is a popular day out for the green-fingered as it's managed by London's Kew Gardens and is home to three national tree collections, England's biggest Christmas tree and the millennium seed bank, set up with the aim of preserving seeds from all native flora in the UK. (Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It was filmed here too if you feel like being dramatic among the trees.) Next door to Wakehurst Gardens, the South of England Showground should keep most tastes occupied with its events attended by tens of thousands throughout the year, including the South of England Show and dozens of public events. And if it's gardens you're after, plenty are within easy reach: try out Standen, Borde Hill and High Beeches just to start you off. Finally, fancy some forest to go with the woodland on the farm? Ashdown Forest is a six-mile trot from Hook Farm and has walking trails, pony trekking and other outdoor options.
