  • Quiet family-friendly site on a smallholding in the High Weald
  • Ardingly Reservoir 15 minutes’ drive; Brighton half an hour
  • Firepits, communal kitchen and picnic benches; freshly laid eggs sold
Looking for a site where you can take long strolls with your dog and maybe let the kids interact with farmyard animals? Deaks Acres, a five-minute drive from the West Sussex village of Cuckfield, might just be the place for you. Just on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this family-friendly site is part of a smallholding with goats, horses and geese, so there’s always a furry (or feathered) creature nearby for your kids to pet or help feed. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead. Each pitch has its own firepit for cosy campfire evenings; if you’re in the mood for making new friends, there's also an area around a large bonfire for guests to gather and socialise. For a fabulous breakfast you surely can't beat scrambled eggs made with eggs from the resident hens. The communal field kitchen is the place to cook these – it's also got a barbecue and a washing up area. For other provisions, the petrol station just across the roundabout on the A272 (10 minutes’ walk) has a small shop, and Haywards Heath (five minutes’ drive) has several supermarkets. Of course, you might opt for a cooked meal from a traditional pub, of which there are several in Cuckfield. There are heaps of walks and bridleways to explore directly from the site, or you can drive to Ardingly Reservoir (15 minutes) for a waterside trail, an activity centre with paddleboards and kayaks, and a dog park you can hire by the half-hour to let your canine buddy run free. For a day at the beach, Brighton is a half hour’s drive away.

Bell tent

Liked: Our stay was really magical even under stressful circumstances. We ended up with a poorly baby and our hosts were so accommodating and friendly offering medicine and allowing us a more relaxed morning with an extended check out time. Once little one had some calpol and sleep we were able to enjoy the many animals on the smallholding and our one year old loved crawling over to sit next to Diana the pig. The stay was quiet, relaxed and charming and we’d definitely like to return.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The pitches were really spacious and spread so we didn’t feel like we were close to anyone. The facilities were nice and clean. It was lovely to see all the different animals on site, perfect for families. Each pitch has a picnic bench and fire pit which were really handy. We loved it here, will definitely return when our daughter is older. Karen was so welcoming and friendly.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Brilliant site, friendly staff and great facilities. Nice large pitches with our own picnic table and firepit. The petting farm was such a nice addition for children.

Disliked: Slightly expensive if you have a large family as its a 'per person' charge with no discount for children. However the site was definitely worth the money.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great pitches with picnic tables and fire pits. Useful open air kitchen with kettle and gas stove and firefighters and marshmallow forks. Eggs for sale. My son loved being able to access the farm to take a look at the animals and Diana the pig. Showers nice and warm and loos with flush and basins with hand soap. Phone network strong. Peaceful and well organised - a gem.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Karen the owner was really helpful and friendly. My 6 year old son loved her. She took time to show him all of the animals and we felt totally safe letting him run around. The campsite is fantastic. The showers and toilets really good and I love the animals being able to run around. This was a hidden gem that we found and I am so glad we did as will definitely come back.

Disliked: Nothing - This campsite has everything you could want.
