  • Three-acre West Sussex site close to the South Downs Way
  • A 15-minute drive to Lewes and Brighton; Bluebell Railway 20 minutes
  • Peaceful back to basics site; village and pub 15 minutes' walk
Weavers is a three-acre family-run site in the West Sussex countryside, a few minutes’ drive from both Hassocks and Clayton. This is a particularly fine spot for walkers and cyclists, as it’s just a short hop from the South Downs Way, and with lots of other lovely walks around too – including to the Jack and Jill windmills (and the neighbouring pub of the same name) about 15 minutes away. You can also walk to Hassocks (across the fields) in about 15 minutes, or to Ditchling, a pretty village with a museum. If your feet need a bit of a rest, perhaps take the train from Hassocks down to Brighton (or drive in 15 minutes) for a day by the seaside instead, or take a 20-minute drive to the Bluebell Railway. After all that, set off back to your peaceful site for a quiet evening spent sitting by the fire and looking up at the stars (wood and kindling can be bought on site, but fires will only be allowed if the weather isn’t too dry). This is a tents-only site and doesn’t allow cars on the pitches, so all should be nicely quiet and safe for all guests. (Wheelbarrows are on hand to help lug gear to the pitches, and site staff can often be around to help too… even if that just involves making you a refreshing cup of tea.) This is a back to basics site that doesn’t have showers or electrical connections, but it does have a toilet with a small basin for hot and cold water. Dogs may stay for free, but will need to be kept on a lead because of the sheep grazing next door and the chickens happily roaming free around the site.

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Weavers. We wanted to enjoy a quick weekend break not too far from London ideally having options to swim or go walking. The weather wasn't so great so we enjoyed lots of walks. The campsite is perfectly situated to get onto the Downs without having to get into your car and there are loads of walking options. The Jack & Jill windmills are a wonderful short walk away with stunning views. We also enjoyed a walk to Devil's Dyke from the campsite with lots more spectacular views and interesting stops (Pyecombe Church is a worthy stop). There are lots of pubs in local villages nearby as well as supermarkets so we felt we had lots of food choices. The campsite itself is lovely being nestled at the foot of the gardens and with a pretty garden and a couple of friendly chickens paying the odd visit to campers. Our hosts were friendly, welcoming and helpful to advise on local points of interest. There is some road noise in the distance but it wasn't an issue for us. There is a working a toilet and a small sink but no shower facilities. We were pleased with the friendly overall atmosphere of this small campsite.

Liked: Beautiful location with plenty of space between pitches. Friendly atmosphere. Close to Downs, train and Park and Ride to Brighton.

Disliked: Suitable for one night only as nowhere to wash dishes if you want to cook. But that was fine for our one night stay.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Great location. Host was friendly and welcoming on arrival and during stay . Able to have a fire pit and purchase logs from host . Site was natural and loads of space for the pitches . Stayed just one night ( which was good as lots of places this is not possible ) which was enough time to get away) as facilities limited to water tap and one shared toilet so not somewhere for a long stay but perfect for a short trip .
