  • Luxury adults-only lodges right next to the South Downs National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Devil's Dyke and 20 minutes from Brighton
  • Walk to restaurants, takeaways, a shop and access to Wolstonbury Hill
If feel-good hikes in the South Downs just seem to be calling your home, you’ll be very well-positioned in The Old Flower Field in West Sussex. The handful of luxury adults-only lodges here are right next to the South Downs National Park – in fact, the boundary is right on the other side of the hedge. That means walks galore if you choose to go that way. Perhaps you’ll begin with a hike up the National Trust’s Wolstonbury Hill from Hurstpierpoint, 10 minutes’ walk away. Hurstpierpoint village, also 10 minutes’ walk from the site, has takeaways and restaurants if you want some good-quality grub upon your return. Otherwise, fill your pockets with snacks from the food shop there and stock up on any supplies you want for your fully-equipped kitchen-dining area. A welcome pack with food and drink is also provided. The two-bedroom lodges were built back in 2017 and plenty of attention has been paid to the little (and big) touches. Each lodge has a terrace area with a table and chairs for alfresco eves and catching sunsets. With all bedding included, bedroom one includes a double Hypnos bed overlooking the South Downs and bedroom two has a single Hypnos bed to maximise the space. The bathroom’s just as lovely and has a walk-in shower with soft white towels. The lodges are designed upon ‘inside-out living’, so the folding glass doors have views over the Sussex countryside, even if you stay on the deep leather sofa or leather armchair. When you want to turn the world off, simply pick a game or book or turn on the TV.

Local attractions

It’s clear already that the South Downs National Park has plenty of walks for you to choose from, so where might you want to add to your wishlist? A stroll past the Jack And Jill Windmills (10 minutes’ drive), a traditional corn mill that runs open days? Ancient sites and archaeology are some of the highlights of walks at the National Trust’s Devil's Dyke (10 minutes). There are ways to mix up your itinerary here, of course. Brighton is just 20 minutes’ drive away or a 40-minute walk and five-minute train if you’d rather not find parking in the city. Once there, you could have a go on the dodgems at Brighton Palace Pier, catch a RIB ride or wander around the SEA LIFE Brighton (half an hour) aquarium or the fishing museum. You might already be here to witness an event at The All England Jumping Course (five minutes) – if that hasn't crossed your mind yet, fixtures include showjumping, polo and even miniature horses.
