Grass pitches with rural views

  • No-frills camping 10 minutes’ drive from East Grinstead in West Sussex
  • Ashdown Forest 10 minutes’ drive, and Tulleys Farm 15 minutes
  • Grass pitches at an outdoor centre; watersports on Weir Wood Reservoir
Liking the idea of a campsite with a leisure centre attached to it? Then you’ve hit the sweet spot with Kingfisher Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from East Grinstead in West Sussex, and adjoining Blackland Farm Outdoor Centre for alfresco adventures and a wide range of activities from hiking to watersports or climbing. Spacious grass pitches are level and surrounded by trees, and there’s plenty of space on the camping field for kids to run around or for you to relax as you soak up your rural surroundings. There are water taps available, but everything else you’ll have to bring in with you – one very big plus, however, is the shower block with functional, clean facilities and plenty of hot water for freshening up after a day’s adventuring in the open air. You’ll certainly never be at a loss for something to do, what with activities at the outdoor centre including an abseil tower, high ropes, a bouldering wall, archery sessions and trampolining… and that’s before you’ve even started looking at the boating possibilities available on neighbouring Weir Wood Reservoir.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Loved the open space and size of pitches. Was so peaceful and calm with so many great walks around the local area. Facilities were perfect, basic but had all that is needed for a camping trip.
Loved every minute and will be back again soon! Dogs had a great time too even in the heat! Staff were also really helpful! Loved the views looking across and spotting the train as it went past.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked It is a well looked after field, half of it quite steep, other half is in level. Toilet block is basic but was always clean. There was a separate family shower room with toilet at the block, what was quite handy. The hot shower is heaven, and with the small shower panel/heather it can't run out, even there are many people! (3 toilets and one shower /♂️ ♀️ + 1 family bathroom)
The site is beside the road, but it isn't really disturbing, very light traffic. Public footpath is going through the field, so easy to start your walking from your tent, don't have to drive, if you don't want. Main reception is a bit further away(better to drive), but you can get assistance from the manager's mobile number, what you can find on site at many different places. No onsite lights, only at the toilet/shower block.

Disliked The gate of the field has a padlock and it was the responsibility of the people camping on the site to leave it open or keep it close. When we arrived I felt a bit anxious about anyone can come and go even by car without recognition, no safety cameras or anything like that. Everything was fine and the site was quite when we were there, but if you prefer higher level of security, maybe book to another part of their site...

A good no frills site, ideal if you want camping as it should be

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Large site, not busy even on a bank holiday weekend, plenty of space, open fires, close to resivoir, secure site.lovely views lots of wildlife. Sounds of bluebell steam trains in background. Close to road but not a busy road. Resivoir nearby excellent for walks and wildlife.
A basic no frills proper camping site, just pitch where you think best in lovely countryside

Disliked The toilet/shower block is basic, which is fine with plenty of hot water, but needs a better standard of and more regular cleaning and toilet rolls refilled more often. Young staff in activity centre could be a bit more knowledgeable, but very friendly

From the manager: Thanks for your review Mark, we're really pleased that you enjoyed your stay- the no frills traditional camping vibe is exactly our bread and butter! Totally take on board the regular cleaning and refilling of loo rolls- Kingfisher is new to us so we'll be sure to adjust this. The toilet block is also well overdue a refurb and that's next on our list. Hopefully see you soon :-)

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Price, Simplicity, Views

Disliked DofE kids, but not really a problem.

From the manager: Thanks so much for your review! It's worth noting for any future campers looking to book that our public field is next to our DofE field at our Outdoor Centre. They're usually pretty good but kids are kids. Hope to see you again soon.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Amazing. Really clean facilities and really friendly. Felt very safe for a group of young people. We also managed to see a steam train pass through the vineyard which was really cool.

From the manager: Thanks Amelia! We're very lucky to be close to the Bluebell Railway- it often 'toots' as it goes past for the kids onsite.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Lovely location overlooking Kingscote Vineyard and the Bluebell Railway line on one side and a few minutes walk from Weirwood Reservoir. Easy access and good toilet and shower facilities. Nice flat field, then sloping down to give nice views of the farm beyond.

Disliked Reasonably close to road, but not disturbed overnight.

From the manager: Thanks so much, Andrew, we're really glad you had a good time! Family / Public camping is new to us and we're really pleased with your review :-)

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Easy check in.
Good location.
Plenty of space.
Plenty of flat spots.
Drinking water available.
Friendly people who run the place.
Looks like there’s lots of activities for groups. Nice walking places and close to the reservoir.
Toilets close by.

Disliked Although I don’t expect showers for this sort of price, I don’t think I would have liked to shower in them.

I was concerned if it rained too much my van would get stuck in the mud so I stayed quite close to the path.

Local attractions

As well as kayak and paddleboard hire at Blackland Farm Outdoor Centre, Weir Wood Reservoir is a popular centre for birdwatching, fishing and dinghy sailing. For long woodland rambles, follow in the footsteps of AA Milne’s much-loved Winnie-the-Pooh stories in Ashdown Forest (10 minutes’ drive); find Pooh Bridge and have a game of Pooh Sticks, or take in far-reaching views to the downs from the forested trails. Step back in time with a ride on the heritage Bluebell steam railway between East Grinstead (10 minutes) and Sheffield Park (20 minutes), with stunning views of the West Sussex countryside along the way. There’s more local heritage to be seen at National Trust-owned Standen House and Garden (five minutes), an impressive Arts and Crafts-style house filled with period furnishings and surrounded by a stunning park and woodland. If the kids need a change from lots of history, take them to Tulleys Farm (15 minutes) for enjoyable escape room challenges, maize mazes and animal encounters – seasonal events take place throughout the year, including tulip-picking in spring and pumpkin-carving at Halloween.
