  • Rural camping in a spectacular setting a few miles from Chichester
  • On-site toilet facilities and pub nearby
  • Dogs welcome, fires allowed and firepits available for hire
Do you like hols where you can ditch the car and wander merrily into the countryside and possibly also along a scenic canal? Have a stay at West Sussex's Donnington Wild Camping if so, for closeness to waterside hikes, city days, cracking local pubs and long lengths of local cycle and bike paths. Set on a rural farm in spectacular surroundings, the site is a short stroll of 100 metres or so from the Chichester Canal, which you can wander or pedal along to get into Chichester a few miles hence or onto the beach at West Wittering, four miles away. About 50 minutes' walk in the other direction takes you to Chichester Marina in the city's handsome harbour, for bites to eat in the restaurant or taking a bike along the 18-kilometre Salterns Way. Donnington is a wild camping site, with well-spaced pitches marked out in circles among fields of long grass. It allows campfires (in hired firepits only, please; logs can be purchased on site but there's no kindling or firestarting equipment) and has toilets and washing-up facilities. Tasty food is dished up at the local pub about 15 minutes' walk away (have their roast if you're around on a Sunday); if you'd rather cook up a storm on the campfire, the local village with supermarket is within easy walking distance, and if you do want to take the car, more supermarkets (along with shops and pubs) are within five minutes.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, loads of wild spaces and enjoyed the spotting alll the birds. Nice walks, close to canal. Really nice big individual camping plots even if you are a solo camper...a rarity. Only staying 1 night, as en route to festival, but would have been happy here for a few days

Disliked: Loos, smelly chemical loos that didn'tflush properly, would have been far better to dig pits and have compost loos!!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The amount of space between pitches is perfect, it felt as if we were the only ones on site at times, despite it being quite full. Having tall grass around the pitches meant each tent was well-screened. It was easy to check in online, and there are signposts for walks nearby which is useful. The road through the site is gravelled and access is good. Convenient location for Chichester with lovely countryside views.

Disliked: The portaloos were especially grim at times - not the best experience I have to admit! The kitchen area is particularly basic. Although one does not expect a full blown kitchen when wild camping, it would be a good idea not to have the drinking water pipe dangling/resting in the mud. Overspill from people filling canisters with water caused people to stand in mud when washing up. An easy one to solve without prejudicing the wild camping ethos. There is road noise which we didn’t expect. It’s not enough to be a huge issue, but it does exist.

From the manager: Hi Augusta, thankyou so much for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad that you enjoyed the pitches and the layout of our campsite. We really appreciate your feedback about the sinks and the water hose. We will look into alternatives and ways to fix these problems. Thankyou again for coming to stay, Donnington Wild Camping 🏕️

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Place beautiful and peaceful. Great location and very well kept

Disliked: Customer service not existent. We were charged and booked but didn’t receive the email confirming what pitch number was assigned to us. We tried to call and email and no one picked up or responded. As a result, we were forced to take one of the two pitches that was free. However, a guy who booked it came later and we had to move the tent and all the equipment. Thankfully, no one else showed up which made us think that potentially that was our spot.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite, pitches were large and well spaced out and nicely secluded with the long grass surrounding the pitch.

Disliked: Arrived to no fire pit on our pitch, emailed the owners and was told there should be one, not much help. My kids were looking forward to a fire so we ended up using one from an empty pitch. Luckily no one occupied it Only 3 toilets but that was fine, they were supposed to be cleaned regularly but not done in the two days we were there! Was very smelly by the second day and dirty.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy check in, just rock up at your pitch (which is sent to you 24 hours beforehand). Beautiful pitches, large, level and private in between tall grass. The fire pits and wood made the trip. We walked down the canal and it's well worth a trip, also only 10 to mins from the beach

Disliked: There wasn't hand soap all the time and a bit of noise of the cars when wind blowing. We went to the crown and anchor pub, which was recommended and pretty for a drink at sunset but overpriced (and we're from London!)

This is a site for getting out on your bike or your own two feet, with miles' worth of paths and trails within easy reach, West Sussex beaches within a few miles, and the South Downs a short drive away. Walk along the Chichester Canal, a minute or two's walk from Donnington Wild Camping, for the few miles to Chichester to see the city's famed cathedral and acclaimed Pallant House Gallery, or wander/pedal in the other direction to get to the marina for access to the Salterns Way, the 18-kilometre route from the centre of Chichester along rural roads and countryside paths to the sand dunes of East Head. The award-winning beach of West Wittering is within about four miles and is known for its wildlife and birds as much as for its spectacular scenery and its views towards Chichester Harbour and the South Downs. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are both popular pastimes in the waters here too.
