Lacton Manor Barn: Getting set up…

General

  • Rural site surrounded by woods and fields in the Kent Downs
  • Five minutes drive from Charing; 15 minutes from Leeds Castle
  • Close to the Pilgrims Way; 25 minutes' walk from the local pub

Lacton Manor Barn is a spacious rural site in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, five minutes’ drive from the village of Charing and with easy access from the M20.

The pitches here are surrounded by fields (which sometimes house livestock) and natural woodlands, with a spring-fed lake nearby and views up to the Pilgrims Way and a vineyard.

This is pared-back camping with no running water, toilets or showers, but drums of fresh water can be supplied. Guests are welcome to set up barbecues and campfires and get stuck into traditional outdoorsy activities like dam building and den making in the woods (there’s plenty of fallen wood to collect around the place for such things).

Those looking to get out and about on foot can do so easily: there are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around, such as the Pilgrims Way, which passes nearby. You can even walk all the way to Canterbury along the North Downs Way should you wish; less ambitious types might prefer a stroll to the nearest pub, 25 minutes away on foot. Whatever kind of wandering you’ve got in mind, the folk on site are happy to offer ideas and advice.

Great site, requested a spot suitable for hammock and tarp camping and Trevor (the owner) gave us a great pitch in the woods.
Trevor escorted us to our pitch gave us a 5 gallon fresh water container and left us to ourselves. We had our own woodland area all to ourselves and we were able to get the car really near our pitch so didn't have to hike all our gear in. Allowed to have proper camp fires and plenty of dead wood laying around (some of it is already pre-cut and piled up by Trever which was a nice touch).
Had a great 1 night stay and this is now my favorite site! Will definitely be back.

The most authentic camping experience one can get in this part of the world (but with all the help and amenities not too far, if you end up needing them). Paradise for children. Very well spaced pitches - we felt like the woods and the fields were all to ourselves. Stayed in a forest floor tent pitch and had to actually walk to see or hear other families in the distance. Clean site and flat surface for pitching the tent. Unlimited and free firewood. Lots of walks around.

If you’re up for some moderate walking and can carry all your gear you can even avoid driving – lots of trains from London to Charing, then a 45-min walk (at children’s pace). All manageable. Seaside is easy to reach too for a day out – we took a train to Ashford then to Folkestone Central.

Could occasionally hear the road and trains (very dampened and not really distracting, trains mostly heard during the day). Absolutely wasn’t an issue - and for some in our party actually added to the excitement (so cannot even put it in the Disliked box!).

The host is amazing – very helpful and great communication.

Fantastic Wild Campsite. Woods, fields and lots of Sheep!19/04/2022

We had an amazing 3 night stay at Lacton Manor Barn over the Eater weekend. Our pitch was in an idealistic patch of forest bordered by 3 fields of sheep and a small lake. We had a huge space to ourselves with freedom to set up our tent and fire wherever we liked with our car just 30 seconds away in 1 of the fields. The sheep and their lambs were a highlight and we laughed so much at their antics throughout the day. The site is big enough to explore with a couple of different walks you can take though the woods and fields. We were provided with a large bottle of water to keep refilling and limitless firewood, considering most other campsites charge for firewood this was a really nice surprise. As It is a wild campsite with no bathroom or shower facilities we opted to hire a toilet tent for the weekend. This was really comfortable to use so would recommend to anyone concerned about the lack of toilets. A few other campers were on site over the weekend but the pitches are so spread out it felt like we had the entire farm to ourselves. Finally Trevor was a fantastic host. He was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay and even came out to late help us get our fire going as we struggled with it on the 1st night. As novice campers Lacton Manor has set the standard very high and will be a very tough act to follow. We will definelty be coming back for another stay and recommending this campsite to our family and friends.

    Disliked:

As other reviews mention the only drawback is you can hear the motorway but it is just a background hum and didn’t bother our sleep at all. We feel it is far outweighed by all of this campsites benefits.

Just arrived home after two awesome days at Lacton Manor Farm. I was staying with my three children (12, 8 & 9) and we had pitch 11 ‘The Glade’ in Lacton Woods. The pitch was perfect, covered in Bluebells and Wild Garlic, a stream running nearby, with no other campers within at least 100 meters. We had two tents, a fire area which we surrounded with some of the chopped up tree trunks which are left lying around for seats.

There are no facilities, but Trevor supplies you with a large water tank which can be refilled at the barn.

The woods are surrounded by sheep fields, where some of the campers we set up. Obviously in April there are lambs which entertained the kids. We explored Grove Wood which is probably one of the most beautiful bit of woodland I’ve visited - the kids described it was ‘magical’ - a thick carpet of bluebells with the occasional Early Purple Orchid.

If you are after a place to escape for a few days away from civilisation where the kids can run around like crazy, learn to build campfires and experience what bears must do in the woods, whilst surrounds with views of the garden of England with the sound of sheep and lambs - you’d struggle to find a better alternative.

    Disliked:

Absolutely nothing - was just what we were after. Trevor even managed to sort out two days of sunshine for us somehow.
