  • Rochester 20 minutes’ drive, and Leeds Castle 25 minutes
  • Watersports hub in a former chalk quarry; café and takeaway on site
Looking for loads of family fun and sporty activities? You’ve struck gold with St Andrews Lakes, tucked away in the Kent countryside 45 minutes’ drive from central London and five minutes from the village of Halling. Here hardstanding motorhome pitches overlook a freshwater lake in a former quarry that’s been painstakingly transformed into a watersports hub (opening times vary depending upon the season and day of the week). There’s loads going on for all ages here, from open-water swimming to paddleboard and pedalo rental or dinghy sailing. For an extra cost, have a runaround on the lake's inflatable aqua park (closed between October and April). Then, when it’s time to rest up, you can retreat to the spa and wellness centre. There’s a beach too, if you’d prefer to find somewhere to snooze on the sand instead of playing around in the water all day. Everything has been thought of to make your stay as easy as possible: there’s a watersports shop (rental is available too) on site, as well as an ‘inflation station’ to take the hard work out of pumping up your paddleboard. No need to worry about catering for your sports-mad kin either, as there’s a beach café serving drinks and homemade snacks, as well as a takeaway pizza service to keep you refuelled for your next sporting activity. And the pitches are pretty handy too: each has an electric hook-up as well as a picnic bench and chiminea for alfresco dining.

Lake View fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Loved the site, really peaceful and well thought out. The kitchen was handy and every pitch had a fire pit/burner for use if you brought wood from the centre. Picnic bench per plot and clearly marked with ropes so the people on the next pitch cannot encroach onto yours - plenty of space and no need to anyway! Kayaking was great and the wellness centre was well worth paying for! We were there for the night of the monthly glow swim/paddle which was fun to see and we are looking forward to taking part in one in the future with friends. We got to chat to the owner too who was really friendly and proud of the site (rightly so). We will defo return, but not in high season!

Disliked: The only downside to our stay was when we arrived on the Friday afternoon, all the bins on the site were full (some overflowing) so we struggled to throw anything away. It doesn’t appear anything is recycled either as all the bins just had everything chucked in. One thing that didn’t effect us as the site was quiet but we did note was that in full season one washing up sink, four toilets, one shower and two basins are likely to be very busy if all 10 pitches are full and potentially 40 campers using them plus visitors using water sports and wellness centre.

Hedge Row fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Amazing scenery, great facilities and water activities. The cleanest toilets and shower facilities we have seen on a camping trip with the added bonus of access to a small kitchen.

Disliked: Our only criticism if we had one would be that the free Wi-Fi signal is very weak.

Lake View fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Lake view, flat pitches, clean facilities, Table and fire pit nice touch

Disliked: Not very welcoming, Overpriced, would have had to pay £40+ if we fancied a swim. Cafe expensive, Not much to see locally. Rules around no vehicles at night don't seem to apply to digger/machinery operatives. Two power cuts when lake lights were switched on. WiFi intermittently poor, No TV signal. Can hear road noise.

Hedge Row fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Upbeat and intelligent welcoming staff. Newness of facilities. Good value for money compared with other similar areas locally. Potential to take part in various water oriented activities.

Disliked: Only one shower on site which appears to be in an office block. Not really geared up for multiple motorhome visitors. The shower room steamed up in an instant with no facility to extract.

Local attractions

If you can drag everybody away from the lake, there’s lots of heritage stuff to see in this corner of Kent. Historic Rochester (20 minutes’ drive) has a stately Norman castle and a Gothic-era cathedral to explore, while neighbouring Chatham (half an hour) showcases centuries of naval history at Chatham Historic Dockyard, where you can tour the World War II destroyer HMS Cavalier and the Cold War-era submarine HMS Ocelot. The spectacular moated Leeds Castle (25 minutes) has enough craft workshops, museums, events and sculpture trails to keep the family busy all day. However, should the siren call of culture start to wane with the kids, take them to Diggerland Kent (10 minutes) for some time moving earthworks and shifting soil around on JCBs. No need to panic if it rains either, as you can divert to the bowling lanes at Hollywood Bowl Rochester (10 minutes). If you’d care to wander further afield, London sights like Greenwich Palace, The Prime Meridian and the National Maritime Museum can be reached in less than an hour’s drive.
