St Andrews Lakes: St Andrews Lakes, Halling, Kent. (photo added by manager on 01/10/2023)

General

  • Lakeside Kent motorhome pitches five minutes’ drive from Halling
  • Rochester 20 minutes’ drive, and Leeds Castle 25 minutes
  • Watersports hub in a former chalk quarry; café and takeaway on site

Looking for loads of family fun and sporty activities? You’ve struck gold with St Andrews Lakes, tucked away in the Kent countryside 45 minutes’ drive from central London and five minutes from the village of Halling. Here hardstanding motorhome pitches overlook a freshwater lake in a former quarry that’s been painstakingly transformed into a watersports hub (opening times vary depending upon the season and day of the week).

There’s loads going on for all ages here, from open-water swimming to paddleboard and pedalo rental or dinghy sailing. For an extra cost, have a runaround on the lake's inflatable aqua park (closed between October and April). Then, when it’s time to rest up, you can retreat to the spa and wellness centre. There’s a beach too, if you’d prefer to find somewhere to snooze on the sand instead of playing around in the water all day.

Everything has been thought of to make your stay as easy as possible: there’s a watersports shop (rental is available too) on site, as well as an ‘inflation station’ to take the hard work out of pumping up your paddleboard. No need to worry about catering for your sports-mad kin either, as there’s a beach café serving drinks and homemade snacks, as well as a takeaway pizza service to keep you refuelled for your next sporting activity.

And the pitches are pretty handy too: each has an electric hook-up as well as a picnic bench and chiminea for alfresco dining.

Upbeat and intelligent welcoming staff. Newness of facilities. Good value for money compared with other similar areas locally. Potential to take part in various water oriented activities.

    Disliked:

Only one shower on site which appears to be in an office block. Not really geared up for multiple motorhome visitors. The shower room steamed up in an instant with no facility to extract.

Very flat gravel pitches each with EHU, a picnic bench and firepit or chimney. Front pitched sites brilliant views across the lake and those on the "hedgerow" side are only blocked by the lake view pitches (so we enjoyed the lake view as there was nobody else on site).
    Very friendly greeting on arrival.
We stayed on a very cold January night and so there were no activities taking place. However the sunrise in a clear sky over the lake was spectacular.
I imagine in the summertime when busy with with people on the lake and able to sit out in the evening it would have a very different vibe.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower facilities were clean but limited and cold in the winter.
You can't bring your own logs to burn.

Friendly helpful staff, the facilities were clean and warm. An well equipped indoor kitchen was available, although we didn't use it. The location is lovely, very quiet and great view of the lake. The pitch was level, with electric hook up and a water tap, its own picnic bench and a fire pit which could be used for no additional charge. We will certainly be back.

This new site is for a dozen campervans and motorhomes at a lake in an old quarry. The lake is purpose-built for watersport activities. It is open all year and offers a beach, open water swimming, BYO or hire SUP, kayaking, sailing etc. It also has a wood-fired sauna and hot tubs. You can dip in the lake between sessions.

A picnic table and bonfire separate each hardstand. There is EHU and wifi. The toilets are clean. The staff are friendly and attentive.

Highly recommended, especially if you are looking for somewhere to stay and paddle or swim – even during winter.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike. It could be tricky to find if you arrive after dark.

    Staff really helpful

    Disliked:

The pitch was sold as fully serviced but did not have a grey waste disposal
When I asked where the Elsan point was I was told that they don’t have one
When I asked where I should empty my toilet cassette all I got was a vague look

From the manager...

Hi there, thank you for your review. Just to clarify, do have an Elsan point and we’re a bit baffled as to who might have told you otherwise! Please accept our apologies.

Local attractions

If you can drag everybody away from the lake, there’s lots of heritage stuff to see in this corner of Kent. Historic Rochester (20 minutes’ drive) has a stately Norman castle and a Gothic-era cathedral to explore, while neighbouring Chatham (half an hour) showcases centuries of naval history at Chatham Historic Dockyard, where you can tour the World War II destroyer HMS Cavalier and the Cold War-era submarine HMS Ocelot.

The spectacular moated Leeds Castle (25 minutes) has enough craft workshops, museums, events and sculpture trails to keep the family busy all day. However, should the siren call of culture start to wane with the kids, take them to Diggerland Kent (10 minutes) for some time moving earthworks and shifting soil around on JCBs. No need to panic if it rains either, as you can divert to the bowling lanes at Hollywood Bowl Rochester (10 minutes).

If you’d care to wander further afield, London sights like Greenwich Palace, The Prime Meridian and the National Maritime Museum can be reached in less than an hour’s drive.

Must see

  • Rochester Castle (3.5 miles)
  • Rochester Cathedral (3.5 miles)
  • The Historic Dockyard Chatham (4.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Cobham Wood and Mausoleum (2.4 miles)
  • Owletts (2.9 miles)
