  • Quiet off-grid site in the Kent countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Folkestone and Hythe on the coast
  • Firepits permitted in the spacious car-free field; walk to the pub
Canvas is king at this tents-only site in the Kent countryside. Between Folkestone beach, 20 minutes’ drive away and the history city of Canterbury, half an hour’s drive away, this is a place for getting back to basics. Pete’s Field is a summer-only site, which pops up on a farm in the Kent Downs for six weeks in July and August only. As such, expect simple facilities and, of course, the simple pleasures of a stay in the countryside. All of the pitches here are grassy and off-grid. There's no electric hook-up, cars are not allowed in the field and amplified music of any kind (even from your mobile phone) is not permitted. If you like the sound of getting back-to-basics for a few days with campfires and stars instead of TikTok and TV, you might just like it here. The car-free policy means that adults can relax and kids can run free in the field. Things change from year to year, but you may find hammocks, hay bales and tree swings or simply entertain yourself by watching the rural life in the surrounding fields. The facilities are basic, consisting of no more than a little container with a few flushing loos and a couple of open-air bucket showers. There's hot water and no roof, so look up at the trees and the sky as you shower. The washing-up sinks are also open-air. Aside from that, there’s a little ‘Rainy Day Trailer’ for shelter in any downpours and logs for sale… and the amiable hosts, Amy and Pete, are happy to provide tips on the local area. The site is in the hamlet of Paddlesworth in the hills above Folkestone and has a drinks-only pub (open on select evenings) five minutes’ walk away, an ancient church, access to the North Downs Way (less than a mile away) or countryside footpaths from just outside the farm. The Channel Tunnel and Dover Port are under 15 minutes’ drive away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: First a compliment to Amy en Pete for their warm welcome, their interest in other people and on how helpful they are. We loved the camping site because it 's remote, yet nearby places of interest. Because it 's clean and safe, because you can pick a pitch yourself and because everything seems so easy going, yet is very well organised. At last a thank you to Pete, because we could take pictures of his ingenieus shower to build the same one at home! We are only sorry we couldn't stay longer, because we had a ferry to catch!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Pete's field is beautifully located and perfect for a stop on the North Downs Way. Both Amy and Pete are very kind and forthcoming, Amy even gave me a lift to a supermarket after a long and hot day hiking. Facilities are great - I especially loved the bucket showers, shampoo and shower gel were provided. There were a few other hikers, cyclists and families, with plenty of space between pitches, it was all in all very peaceful :)

Bell tent

Liked: We loved everything about Pete’s field! Amy and Pete were fantastic hosts. The space was beautiful and very peaceful. The facilities were fantastic and extremely clean. You MUST have a bucket shower! Toiletries are included and quite luxurious! We stayed in a bell tent and this included beds, chairs, cool box, fire pit with wood for the first night and a box containing everything you would need for camping (cups, glasses, cutlery, plate and a camping stove with gas). We really enjoyed our stay and enjoyed exploring the surrounding area. It’s an ideal location for Folkestone, Dymchurch, Hythe, Deal etc We’re already planning our trip back! Thanks Amy and Pete!

Disliked: There were quite a few wasps around (maybe just time of year?), so makes sure you bring bug spray and bite cream etc
