  • Dog-friendly farm site in Romney Marsh run by a friendly family
  • Cycling and walking paths nearby; a 15-minute drive to Dungeness
  • Café next door and a traditional pub five minutes’ walk away
Kicking back peacefully in Kent will be the only task at hand at dog-friendly Jessamine Farm, unless you want to count roaming around Romney Marsh by bicycle or visiting a lighthouse or lush beach on the coast. Folks have been cantering to Jessamine Farm for over 40 years - since 1978 - so thousands before you have also gone on to track down the easily accessible local National Cycle Routes (including the numbers two and 11) and walking trails. Just like you might, they’ve probably also plopped down on a lush grassy spot in the orchard to take in the starry skies on a clear night. This family-run site is peaceful indeed, and it has a lot of character: Puff the horse may spy on you from afar and you may also spot the family’s dog Omen (also known as chief rabbit chaser and sock thief). The meadow has a wildlife pond, and on the note of wildlife, bird chorus will also serve as a ‘good morning’ from the feathered kind. When you’re feeling peckish, either rustle up something edible on a campfire or head out to one of several local spots. Next door, there’s a typical British café serving fry-ups. New Romney, five minutes’ drive away, has a supermarket, and popular restaurants including an Italian and a Mediterranean restaurant. A traditional pub is also five minutes’ walk away.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The pitch spaces are a decent size and well spaced for privacy.
It’s fairly quiet despite being on a main road.
The family are welcoming and accommodating.
We really enjoyed our fire pit and logs.
Toilet block was clean and decent size, shower was pleasant too, the only issue being it was quite far to get to from the tent pitches.
It’s basic, as you would expect for a pop up tent site, but has everything you need.
We are looking forward to returning next year!

Electric touring pitch

Liked Beautiful small site, with probably the nicest toilets and shower you could imagine on a campsite. It was a perfect location for some cycling. National Cycle Network route 2 is on the doorstep, so there are lots of safe, quiet lanes to explore and a fantastic path that goes to Rye.

Local attractions

Working your way outwards is a good plan of action, and beginning that tactical exploration will no doubt be a visit to the Brenzett Aeronautical Museum (five minutes’ drive), where there’s a wartime equipment collection, aircraft crash site remains and other wartime artefacts. A different chapter of history is on-hand (and interactive) at Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (five minutes), a heritage railway which will take you Dungeness the old-fashioned way. Once in Dungeness (15 minutes), there’s a fair few next courses of action… climbing to the very top of the Old Lighthouse, a Grade II-listed building which saved many ships in the 20th century, perhaps? Keeping your eyes peeled for rare birds (booming bitterns and wheatears, even) in the RSPB nature reserve? Port Lympne Safari Park (25 minutes) has a good-sized selection of bigger animals; the acres-wide drive-in savannah features lions, tigers and wolves.
