Grass pitch - the russets
Whole site surrounded by trees

  • Orchard pitches on a fruit farm and plant nursery in Kent countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Sissinghurst Castle Garden and 25 to Leeds Castle
  • Fresh eggs on site; five minutes’ drive to a pub
It’s not every day you get to pitch up among fruit trees, so grab the chance to do just that at Frittenden Orchard, where off-grid grass pitches are scattered in orchards on a Kent farm near Staplehurst. For even more of a back-to-nature vibe, you can wander the 11-acre woodland wildlife haven around the camping fields, where you might get to see foxes, badgers and deer. The site owners are happy to suggest local walks and sightseeing ideas for you. Free-range eggs are available from their own hens (just think of the breakfast fry-ups…). As this is a simple campsite, there’s no electricity but you will have a wifi connection and ice-pack freezing to keep your food fresh and chilled, as well as charging facilities for your devices, so you can keep in touch with the outside world. You can barbecue meals on grills brought from home, and pick up locally sourced produce from the handy store in Frittenden (five minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather someone else did your cooking while you’re away from home, there’s also a smashing pub in the village serving yummy burgers and local beers.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely site and location. Basic but clean facilities: somewhere to do washing up and charge our phones, one flushing toilet at the top of the site and 2 portaloos in the main field. Lots of nice walks and things to see locally: I went to Sissinghurst Castle which was beautiful. Friendly owner who regularly checked in to see if people were ok and kindly froze my ice packs for me.

Disliked I wasn't able to get any Wifi where I was camped at the bottom of the orchard but I was there to get-away from it all so it wasn't an issue!

It was a Bank Holiday weekend and the owner felt the site was going to be quite busier. We were directed to camp at the bottom of the orchard and there were a few other tents next to us in our corner. Everyone was lovely but the field is huge and we could all actually have been much more spaced out.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked An idyllic rural location set in an orchard with lots of great walks and things to do nearby. Diane who runs the site is super friendly and this sets the tone for everyone else. It’s a very friendly and relaxed place for all generations. The village pub does a great Sunday lunch and there is a lovely walk from the campsite to get to it. Whilst no showers and EHU there are thoughtful facilities like fridge, cooler, phone charging availability….

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely, friendly owner on site. Plenty of space for pitches. Fantastic area to walk around or just chill around the campsite. No signs of any bad behaviour or agro from drunk campers which was nice. A real plus for myself and my fiancée was how quiet the place was, even with kids running around playing.

Disliked We would have loved to have a shower but we have no complaints at all.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked The pitch was great, good washing up area, really big field lovely to be amongst the orchard, very peaceful, host was very helpful and really lovely walk through the wood and field to get to the town and the local pub

Disliked Better toilet facilities would have been preferred but were kept clean and as described and the host even opened up her own toilet at the back of her house, which was really helpful.

Local attractions

Kent is known for its historic stately homes – but which to visit first? Leeds Castle (25 minutes’ drive) has a host of activities, from guided tours to jousting tournaments and raptor displays, to keep families entertained all day. There are rose gardens to wander in Sissinghurst Castle Garden (10 minutes), and at moated Scotney Castle (25 minutes) you can follow trails through landscaped parkland. There’s more active stuff to do too; kids with energy to burn can wear themselves out on zipwires or mountain-biking trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes), or on the inflatable course at Bewl Water Aqua Park (25 minutes). Younger children can cuddle the cute creatures at Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats (20 minutes), and any rainy-day issues are taken care of by the indoor pool at The Weald Sports Centre (10 minutes). If you’ve treated the kids to their day out, you deserve some me-time too. How about heading into Royal Tunbridge Wells (40 minutes) to browse indie shops or lunch in the cosy bistros of The Pantiles? And if you fancy a night out, book tickets for shows at the Trinity or Assembly Hall theatres.
