  • Spacious and peaceful rural Kent site 15 minutes' walk from Cranbrook
  • Bedgebury Pinetum and Sissinghurst Castle within 15 minutes' drive
  • Guest barn with kitchen area, seating and pool/table tennis games
What to do when you’d like to be staying out in a peaceful rural location – but you also know you’d really appreciate the convenience of having shops and places to eat close by? Well, here’s an idea: stay at Mystic Nights Campsite. This relaxed Kent countryside site is entirely surrounded by woodland and farmland, and yet it’s only a 15-minute walk to the smart little town of Cranbrook (along a path through the woods, so you won’t even have to deal with roads… nice, huh?) The vibe is full-on rural relaxation at this site – there’s nine acres of land, but guest numbers are kept low so everyone has plenty of space. And that also means plenty of space for things like flying kites, kicking a ball around or getting a campfire or barbecue going in the evening (logs available to buy on site). Host Sarah pops round each day to make sure everyone’s comfortable and having a good time (and generally everyone is…) If the weather puts a dampener on those outdoor activities, all is not lost – the site has a big barn where you can play pool or table tennis, or just relax in the dry space. The barn’s also the place to find the kettle, toaster and microwave along with water for washing-up, handwashing and teeth cleaning.Toilet facilities are in the form of clean compost loos a couple of minutes’ walk away. Cranbrook has a good collection of places to pick up foodie supplies or settle in for meals and drinks, and it’s also a good base for day trips – the likes of Sissinghurst Castle, Bodiam Castle and Bedgebury National Pinetum are all close by.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Increadibly spacious pitches. Only few tents on a massive field. Lots of space for children to run around. The barn is fantastic! Sinks with hot water, fridge, microwave and a kettle. Lots of games for kids too. Toilets kept clean and as pleasant as can be for a compost toilet. The biggest appeal is the small number of campers allowed at a given time. No dogs and party groups. Absolutely brilliant for families! The owners were incredibly helpful and cleaned the facilities daily.

Disliked: The field must have been used for grazing and the animal droppings were not cleared away. The price for a small bucket of logs was a bit steep.

Local attractions

There are castles galore around this area – the spectacular Sissinghurst Castle Garden is the closest (10 minutes’ drive), but you might also like to take in moated Bodiam Castle and the ruins of Scotney Castle (both 15 minutes). Leeds Castle (half an hour) is an excellent option for a full day out, with falconry displays, boat or train rides and several play areas as well as the grand building to visit. As you’ll be staying in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are lots of nice places around to walk or ride bikes. Bedgebury National Pinetum (15 minutes) is a good spot for outdoor time, especially with the kids – it’s got a Gruffalo trail, a sensory trail and a Go Ape adventure park as well as well-marked walking/bike trails. For more outdoor time, try Bewl Water (20 minutes) for fishing, swimming, watersports and an aqua park – or take a vineyard tour (and a sample, of course) at Chapel Down winery (25 minutes).
