  • Well-maintained meadow site 10 minutes’ drive from Tunbridge Wells
  • Penshurst Place 10 minutes’ drive; Haysden Country Park 15 minutes
  • Free ticket to Groombridge Place for each guest; showers and toilets
The Garden of England (that’s Kent, in case you missed the memo) and East Sussex are yours to explore from Groombridge Camping, a well-maintained site on the outskirts of the village of Groombridge and a 10-minute drive from Royal Tunbridge Wells. (If you'd like to go into town but would rather not struggle to find a parking space, there's a bus stop right outside the gate – how very convenient.) The spacious and flat grassy pitches are surrounded by woodland inhabited by native wildlife, so be prepared to wake up to a lively dawn chorus and (if you’re lucky) to have the occasional encounter with a grazing wild deer. This is wild camping but with a handful of luxuries: showers, for starters, plus a toilet block and a washing-up area. There’s plenty of space for kids to play safely; in addition, each guest receives one free entry pass to Groombridge Place - Enchanted Forest & Gardens (five minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk). With a range of adventure courses, canal boat rides and falconry displays here, there’s something to keep the entire family happy. Or you can head to Forest Way Country Park (five minutes’ drive), where you can walk or cycle along a trail following a disused railway line all the way to East Grinstead. After a home-cooked dinner at a local pub (the nearest is just over five minutes’ walk away), you can make the most of the low light pollution in the area and settle down for an evening of stargazing.

Local attractions

It’s so close, it would be wrong if you didn’t pay at least a quick visit to Royal Tunbridge Wells (10 minutes’ drive). After strolling along The Pantiles, a colonnaded promenade lined with elegant shops and independent cafés, head to the vast Tunbridge Wells Commons for a picnic, a hike or to watch a game of cricket. There’s lots to see and do at Penshurst Place & Gardens (10 minutes), a 14th-century estate that was later used as a hunting lodge by Henry VIII. Inside are suits of armour, period furniture and collections of decorative arts, while the grounds attract with a rose garden, an orchard and a landscaped Italian garden centred around a lily pool. Spread over 160 acres, Haysden Country Park (15 minutes) includes areas of woodland, marshes and freshwater lakes where you can do a spot of angling (be sure to get a day ticket, though). And of course, there are splendid trails and bridleways through it all, plus Regional Cycle Route 12.

Liked: Everything about it, the toilets, showers and the sinks were clean and new all different types of camping available (e.g easy, hard and electric) it was a lovely ground and after we were in gates locked which made myself and everyone else feel so much more secure and safe.

Disliked: Nothing
