  • Pop-up glamping site in the scenic grounds of a country manor
  • In the protected High Weald area, a 10-minute drive to Tunbridge Wells
  • Sturdy bell tents with beds, rugs, furnishings and cooking kit
Cosy up under canvas for the weekend courtesy of Brighton Bell Tents at Chafford Park Estate, a pop-up glamping site on a country manor estate among 300 acres of stunning countryside in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Each berth at this park near the border between Kent and Sussex is placed in the pretty Picking Field, at least 10 metres apart from its next-door neighbour for a bit of privacy, and comes fully furnished with cosy carpets, rugs, a double camp bed with a mattress topper and two single camp beds. Thoughtful extras are also chucked into the mix to help ensure stints here go seamlessly, including lanterns, fairy lights, a camping night light and a small cookbox with utensils, plates, cutlery and cups. While the complimentary provisions are plentiful, the organisers at this Ashurst site recommend you pack your own bedding and a camping stove. It’s also worth bringing a couple of folding chairs to sit on, either for inside the five-metre tents or outdoors in the meadow looking out across the lush greenery with a takeaway on your lap from the local pub in Penshurst (10 minutes’ drive). Worried about weather? There’s no need: these spacious units are equipped with a zipped-in heavy-duty groundsheet to ward off rain. A shared toilet, shower and kitchen facilities are within the site’s barn and parking is available in the adjacent field. Logs for building a blaze are available to purchase on site and food hampers are sold at a farm shop nearby.

Local attractions

Explore close to home with jaunts to the genteel villages of Fordcombe and Penshurst, both less than 10 minutes’ drive, then tour a larger settlement with a trip around Tunbridge Wells (10 minutes) before settling into a seat on a Spa Valley Railway steam train from the town and chugging through the High Weald countryside to Eridge. If your interests are firmly based in historical pursuits, take your pick: there’s the stunning Scotney (half an hour) and Sissinghurst stately buildings (45 minutes) for ganders at grand gardens, along with Hever (15 minutes) and Leeds (55 minutes) with their moats and turrets. Kids will have a grand old time mimicking the knights who used to grace these structures, but they’re also sure to adore an afternoon making the most of The Hop Farm’s massive inflatable trampolines, laser tag games, 4D cinema and petting zoo (half an hour). Family-friendly amusement outdoors is also to be the same distance away around Bewl Water while fly fishing and rowing a boat or during walks around Groombridge Place Estates’ manicured gardens and fairytale-themed adventure forest (30 minutes).
