Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Excellent and friendly staff. Access to the river for paddle boarding and boating is excellent and easy.Fields are very large and great for big to small groups which includes families. Would only return because of the river which is a shame as it could be a wonderful campsite.

Disliked: The only disappointment of the camping site is that there is only one toilet block for the entire site which can lead to a long walk. What's also very disappointing is the state and size of the toilet block. Only 3 cubicles for the men and 5 for the women. This accommodates the entire site for potentially hundreds of people.when we left at 8am in the morning only one cubicle was running due to the lack of toilet paper and cleanliness. Shame really, toilet block is needed on each field.

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us especially over the extremely busy Bank Holiday weekend. We have 2 toilet and shower blocks next to each other and they were both open all weekend (1 would close at a time to enable thorough cleaning) you must have only used the smaller ones(with the wooden steps) perhaps the larger ones were being cleaned when you went to use them and once cleaned the one you used would have been cleaned straight after the cleaned ones were re-opened. We look forward to welcoming you again, if you can try to avoid Bank Holidays your visit would be more pleasant.

Disliked: Could of done with more facilities maybe in the corner of each field as a long way to go at night if needed

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us especially over the extremely busy Bank holiday weekend. We have lots of fields for people to enjoy spreading out in away from other campers if they choose to, therefore the further away from the amenities the longer the walk or drive but the more peaceful it becomes. Some guests bring toilet tent facilities for night time use. We hope to see you again soon.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice area and pitch

Disliked: None of what I booked was correct many large dogs off leads late music motor bikes riding around in the field past mid night. We may just have picked a bad weekend but looks and seems to be no control in what goes on with large groups, nobody checking.

From the manager: I am sorry you did not enjoy your Bank Holiday stay with us. Bank Holiday weekends are the busiest and for many people it is an opportunity to get together with family and friends. As you can see by other reviews many guests had no problems or issues whilst staying the same weekend. If you had any any concerns whilst staying you could have contacted us, the office was open from 830am until at least 730pm after this time we are available on the mobile number printed on the front of your check-in cards when arriving. We came around the whole of the site a few times during the day and evening (clearly visible by the gator we drove) and a few guests did call us over to ask for information. We did the 10pm site check and were out on site for over 1 hour, after this we do not come out unless we are called out by guests (we live on site all year round next to the touring office). The campsite is open to the river with several public footpaths and the general public do walk through refusing to put their dogs on leads. We also had a camping and caravan club on site hiring one of the fields. I spoke to the marshalls a few times and no issues were raised. It is a shame that you have said you will not visit again or recommend us as outside Bank Holidays the campsite is completely different. There are lots of lovely walks without even leaving the 500 acres.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Location was fantastic, the site its self was so peaceful. Toilet and shower blocks were clean. The lady we checked us in was very friendly.

Disliked: The grass was quite long in places meaning you couldn’t see where the ditches were when walking to the toilets.

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us and that you will visit again. Unfortunately the grass at this time of year needs cutting about every 5 days and with 500 acres this can prove a challenge especially when the weather is not kind to us. We look forward to your next visit.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Really easy going site - fantastic amount of space so can pitch up away from others so that the kids could play without being in anyone's way. Fantastic to be able to drop our paddle boards in the river.

Disliked: Only one central toilet block - it could do with a couple of Portaloos on the extremities of the site for those camping in other fields.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us especially over the extremely busy Bank Holiday weekend. The campsite did have portaloos one year, unfortunately due to the remoteness of the outer fields and public footpaths they were vandalised. Some guests having stayed before bring their own toilet tent facilities for night time use so they can be further away where it is quieter. We look forward to welcoming you next time.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Been here a good few times and it’s been superb, access to river walk, seeing Kingfishers and an array of bird life.

Disliked: There was a large group partying until gone 3am with loud music and shouting - inconsiderate campers. Perhaps a warden wouldn’t go a miss

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am sorry that you did not enjoy your visit this time over the Bank holiday as a group of 5 adults and will not stay again. We do come around the whole of the campsite at 10pm which can take over 1 hour asking for music to be turned off if any is playing and to adhere to the campsites policies. If music is turned back on after we have left we need to be made aware by calling the number printed on the front of your check-in cards and we will come out to anyone disrupting other campers, unfortunately only telling us of your issues now on a review means it is too late to rectify them.

Local attractions

Once the kids let you off site, Kent (aka The Garden of England) has beaches, historic towns, forests and more castles, stately homes (and gardens) open to the public than anywhere else in the country. If this isn't enough, Paddock Wood railway station is five minutes’ drive from The Hop Farm for a train to London, less than an hour away. Dover is within 60 miles for a day trip to France. Kent has 350 miles of coastline, with Blue Flag beaches, watersports and those famous white cliffs at Dover. Eight of the 11 Blue Flaggers are in Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs; Whitstable and Herne Bay are also popular with oyster eaters, anglers and jetskiers. There are umpteen options for families in the area including play centres, farms, horse riding and days out. Howletts Wild Animal Park at Canterbury has the biggest group of looked-after gorillas in the world and experiences for visitors such as junior ranger days. Penshurst Place and Gardens has historical re-enactments, children’s trails, an adventure playground and special events during the school holidays. Both Leeds Castle at Maidstone and Hever Castle near Edenbridge are family-friendly and packed with activities and events. There’s a Go Ape! at Leeds Castle as well as two mazes, boat trips, falconry displays, underground grotto and the Knights' Realm Playground, a scale model of the castle (and a golf course and golf instruction for the grownups). Hever, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, has a yew maze and water maze, award-winning gardens and a topiary. Back with the big folk, the old market towns of Tonbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Wells are close by for shopping and sightseeing. Bluewater shopping centre is in Greenhithe (rival Lakewater is just over the Essex border at West Thurrock).
