  • Back to basics dog-friendly wildlife haven in the Knatts Valley
  • A 20-minute drive from Chartwell; just over an hour from London
  • Public footpaths nearby; pubs and food shop within walking distance
From scouting out Kent’s medieval manors to wandering around site’s woodlands, strip things back to the basics at Water Wood. A site set up for families only (and their beloved furry friends) to spend some quality time away from the clockwork of everyday life and an hour and five minutes' drive from London, this is a true wildlife haven… stroll up and pick out a peaceful spot somewhere among the 20 acres of mature woodland and open meadows. Morning alarm? Well, unless you’re in a rush to set off onto the public footpaths surrounding the site, it may suit you to stir awake naturally to the sound of the birds and wildlife around the site. The site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Knatts Valley after all, so things are rather scenic around the site… stretch your legs in the woodlands or take your hot brew to sip on over a valley view towards London. If you find it hard to function without a decent helping of food, no need to fret, as it’s only a five-minute drive into West Kingsdown, a village with a small food shop, pubs and restaurants. In fact, the nearest pub (a dog-friendly inn with a chilled-out area to hang out in outdoors) is just 20 minutes’ walk away.

Route directions

From the A20 West Kingsdown follow School Lane past Knatts Lane on your right, and St Care Hill road on your left. You will then be on Tinkerpot Lane. Please travel 100 yards until you see a track on your right, situated on a sharp left-hand bend. Drive down the track, past a group of houses (it gets narrow here) all the way until you reach Water Wood’s metal 5-bar gate.

Local attractions

Hunt down the local castles… Hever Castle & Gardens (35 minutes' drive) is the place to stroll around the grounds and moats if you'd like to see where Anne Boleyn grew up. There's a maze here too - challenge yourself to find your way through. At Leeds Castle (25 minutes), there are more activities for kids to do, whether it’s putting holes on the miniature golf course, watching a falconry display or clambering around the obstacle course. There are certainly no shortages of historic places nearby. Perhaps you might be interested in the former home of medieval knights and fancy Victorians or Tudors at the National Trust’s Ightham Mote (15 minutes)? The outdoor theatre and coach house at Penshurst Place (35 minutes)? The attics and showrooms at Knole Park? Or Churchill’s old home at Chartwell (20 minutes)? If you want to stretch your legs on a longer walk, Lullingstone Country Park (15 minutes) has routes over 450 acres, plus playgrounds for a pause and a play. Other stop-offs close to the site include the race course at Brands Hatch Circuit (five minutes) or the London Golf Club (10 minutes).
