  • Comfortable bell tent in the Romney Marsh village of Ivychurch, Kent
  • Half an hour’s drive to Camber Sands and 45 minutes to Leeds Castle
  • Camping kitchen, shower pod and firepit; pub 20 minutes’ walk
Occupying its own paddock, the luxuriously furnished bell tent at Melon Farm is on the outskirts of the sleepy village of Ivychurch on Romney Marsh, Kent. With such a peaceful location near south-coast beaches, it’s a relaxing base for a family (and any canine companions) wanting to put down roots on a camping getaway. Within striking distance of London, the glampsite also makes a handy overnight stop for anyone en-route to Europe via the Kent ports of Folkestone and Dover – you don’t have to pitch a tent as it’s all ready for you, and there’s easy vehicle access to the site plus private parking. Sleeping up to four, the bell tent is stylishly furnished with cosy rugs, lots of storage and a proper double bed plus camp beds for extra guests. Bedding is provided. A shabby-chic shower and loo pod is close by, and a simple camper’s kitchen with a barbecue, kettle and hob is steps away from the tent. When it’s sunny and warm, make the most of the alfresco picnic table and seating, and if the weather’s not playing ball, you can retreat into the covered kitchen or snuggle up around the firepit after dark, when the bell tent is prettily illuminated with solar lights. Need a break from cooking? The village pub is walkable via a footpath from the site (25 minutes’ stroll) so leave the car behind and make a night of it.

Local attractions

With the kids? Chances are you’ll be heading for the beach: head to Camber Sands (half an hour) for bucket-and-spade fun with the kids, while the vibe at Greatstone Beach (15 minutes) is quieter, with miles of grass-topped sand dunes to explore. If you all should tire of the beach, then a visit to Port Lympne Safari Park (20 minutes) to see the silverback gorillas and big cats should keep everybody happy. Fans of pottering around ancient castles will be pleased to note that the landmark Dover Castle (40 minutes) is opened for guided tours of its military museum and war-time tunnels, while dreamy, moated Leeds Castle (45 minutes) makes a full family day out, with play areas for the kids, birds of prey shows and tours of stately apartments as well as all sorts of events throughout the year. Green-fingered guests might also like to nose around Sissinghurst Castle Garden (40 minutes), lovingly created by writer Vita Sackville-West in the 1930s. You’ll find another unusual garden at Dungeness (20 minutes), home to Derek Jarmen’s Prospect Cottage, surrounded by flint, shingle and hardy plants.

Bell tent

Liked: Great facilities, the host included all essentials and more so you just take your clothes and food! Perfect for dogs as in enclosed paddock and the chance to have an open fire is great. Walking distance to a pub in 10 mins that serves food so ideal if you don’t want to cook. If you get a clear night the night sky is fabulous as little light pollution. Recommend to take a bike as the roads are flat and you have several seaside towns within a few miles and much to explore.
