  • Peaceful and basic adults-only site in a secluded and natural setting
  • Five minutes’ drive to Kent’s coast and 10-minute walk to New Romney
  • A 10-minute drive to Dungeness National Nature Reserve
If the thought of a peaceful hol with excellent access to town amenities is trickling through your mind, make your idea a reality with a stint amid the trees and grassland fields of Running Waters Holiday Park. This secluded adults-only site may feel like it’s deep in the countryside, but it’s just a 10-minute walk from New Romney’s pubs, bars and restaurants, and is a smart choice if being close to the coast is key; some of Kent’s finest stretches of seaside, including the gorgeous Greatstone beach, are within five minutes’ drive. After indulging in days by the English Channel, meander along one of the multiple footpaths leading from the site or dawdle down the Dungeness National Nature Reserve’s trail (10 minutes), a wildfowl-filled conservation area set on a shingle spit. Relaxing is of course on the agenda while touring outside the park, but the grounds are also a pretty place for a rest in spacious greenery. The site’s a simple sort of spot yet has the amenities you need for a happy holiday, including separate ladies and gents' toilets, a shower block, washing-up facilities with cold water and a chemical disposal unit. Barbecues are allowed (when raised off the ground), so grub can be grilled for dinner when you’re not eating out in New Romney. Open fires aren't permitted, however, for the safety of all on site.

Local attractions

When you’re not at the beach, check out some of the famed English Heritage landmarks within driving distance of the park, including The Great Tower and Leeds Castle (40 minutes). Canterbury Cathedral (50 minutes) – a World Heritage Site and one of England’s most renowned Christian buildings – is another must-see spot for those into their history. An activity not to miss is a ride on the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway (five minutes), the world’s smallest public railway. Soak up the scenery while chugging along, then take off to the Port Lympne Reserve’s 600 acres of countryside (30 minutes) for an animal-spotting trip. Highlights might include gazing at Kent’s only giraffe, a group of spectacled bears and a selection of big cats. If you feel like venturing further away, access to France via the Channel Tunnel and car ferry ports in Folkestone is within half an hour, while the high-speed train link leading to London is also 30 minutes from the park.
