Greatstone beach is just 300 yards away and turns to sand dunes a quarter mile up the coast

  • Dog-friendly park an hour from London and 300 yards from the beach
  • Clubhouse including kids' corner with TV, video games and pool tables
  • Hot showers, football pitch and dog-walking area
Frazzled by capital city life but don't want to spend six or seven hours driving to a holiday by the seaside? Come and be dazzled by New Romney Caravan Park in Kent, a piffling hour from London and another piffling 300 yards from the two-mile stretch and sandy dunes of Greatstone beach. It's all family-run by a team which does its utmost to ensure guests do like to be beside the seaside, mixing a rural Kent Marshes setting with up-to-date comfy facilities and stuff to do on site. The level grass accommodation field catches the evening sun (for snoozes in deckchairs while someone else sorts out the barbie), and has easy access to the park toilets, hot showers, launderette and washing-up facilities as well as a roomy football pitch for the kids and/or energetic parents. If you're bringing the dog, a spacious area has been set aside on site for walks (Greatstone beach a couple of minutes' walk away is dog-friendly too; woof). And if you want to keep the kids busy, take the crew along to the Hoy Club clubhouse, which serves meals and snacks, and comes with a separate area for the kids to expend energy: a TV, interactive video games and pool tables are all here to tire them out nicely. Coffee is served here from 10am to noon on Saturdays and Sundays to give your weekend mornings a boost of caffeine.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked Nice sized plot, all camping pitches close to facilities.
Staff worked hard to keep facilities clean, shame people treat the facilities with such disregard.
Disabled facilities limited but slope easy to use in the dry.

Disliked Not sure a tap next to the pitch makes it fully serviced. Unable to hook up to tap, had to use bottles to fill up as could not get the small dirty hose off the tap. Every other pitch also used the tap next to us!

Almost every dog was off a lead in our area despite many signs to say they must be on a lead. Not challenged by ground staff.

Grey waste behind some kind of pointy, jabby palm tree with a kerb to negotiate up and down. Not obviously marked either.

Not all the shower token machines worked but staff did refund us with another token. However it did mean we had to get dressed and go to the office. That was a pain.

Disappointed that tents allowed to pitch up outside of their pitch to make sure they had almost half a field for themselves. Meant they were encroaching on others who have paid good money. Some selfish campers about with nice campers not wanting to make a scene.

Pool table needs levelling, it makes playing difficult and at £1 a go, I would expect better. Also no darts available behind the bar.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked Fully serviced pitch was OK although all the campers not on Fully serviced kept walking alongside our caravan to use our water.

Disliked The holiday park is advertised as having food available throughout peak season, the bar never opened until after 5pm and served no food at all, we even asked at reception if food was being served and was told should be. Well it wasn't and we expected to eat there every day and didn't take any food with us for that season, anyway who wants to have to cook on holiday.

I wouldn’t recommend for a young family looking for a quiet site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Bar on site, good size kids park, close to the beach.

Disliked We had a mixed experience. We asked for two pitched together by email and turned out they were opposite. We had a very loud family playing loud music all evening. I tried to contact the out of office house keeping but no one answered. The toilets and showers were blocked (presumably some kids being stupid).
I think this site attracts older families and with the bar on site, it seems most will get merry and have no awareness of tidiness or noise.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Absolutely loved the campsite.
Was my first time ever with newly built van so didn't know what to expect.
Staff were lovely pitch was perfectly positioned, water and electric right next to us.
My boy and partner had an amazing time.
Food was lovely at the bar.

Disliked Only dislike and its nothing to do with the campsite itself was the beach, the environment agency put a note up saying water wasn't safe to swim in, but we found other things to do.
So no dislikes for the campsite.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked The staff were lovely. The site was clean. The toilets and showers were modern and close to the pitch. Lots of birds in the trees. We had an electric hook up which had our very own tap with drinking water and a drain. That was very handy. Lydd airport is close by, so if you have children or enjoy planes, that was pretty cool.

Disliked The beach opposite had poor water quality when we visited and it wasn't recommended to swim there. Thats not the campsites fault but it's something to bare in mind.

Local attractions

Active types can take their pick from land and water activities in the area, such as pedalling the many flat bike routes or walking along the old military canal of Romney Marsh, and viewsome golf at the championship golf course at Littlestone between Romney Marsh and the English Channel. Zip along in a jetski on the surface of nearby Lydd Lake or at Greatstone beach, also properly gorgeous for kicking up sand on horseback. On the water, have at it at kitesurfing, sailing, or sea fishing for eels, school bass and whiting (dig in the flats at low tide to find lugworm to use as bait). Dungeness, a few miles along the coast, and lovely Dover a 45-minute drive away are both great to cast off from too: fish for mackerel at Dungeness in summer or for bass closer to shore; and mackerel, bass, dogfish, cod and plaice from the Prince of Wales and Admiralty Pier at Dover. This is a cracking region for species spotting with nature reserves at both New Romney and Dungeness (look out for the lighthouse at the latter), and hundreds of thousands of migrating seabirds landing on the Kent Marshes every winter. The butterflies and falcons of the Rare Breeds Centre at Ashford are also well worth a squint.
