  • Family-run and friendly site within a mile of Lydd
  • Fishing lakes and nature trails on site; watersports next door
  • Showers and toilets, washing-up hut, shop and playground
What do you reckon about pitching up at an amiable and family-friendly place with fishing on site – and a watersports centre right next door? Land a stay at Romney Marsh's Herons Park, a family-run and friendly site welcoming guests (and dogs) for Kent-based stays. Juniors are most welcome too – and if your small sort isn't enamoured with fishing or watersports, you'll likely catch their interest with a mention of the go-karting circuit also next door; the beach at Camber Sands within five miles or the critters of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park within ten or so miles… The Herons Park team can supply info on bike hire and local hikes too. The park has fairly level, marked out grass pitches, a toilet and shower block, a chemical waste point and waste disposal bins within the camping field, and a small shop stocking camping staples such as ice creams, sweets, toys and refreshments. Hired firepits with kindling and logs are on site for guests' use, so speak to the site team after booking to reserve yours. Barbecues are allowed on all pitches, and there's a kids' playground to keep the little ones entertained. If you're here for the angling, you can add a fishing pass to your stay as an extra. (You'll need a current fishing licence if you want to fish two rods; pick one up at the post office.) The town of Lydd and the nearest offsite shop are within a mile.

What customers say

This well-maintained site offers spacious, level pitches and a friendly atmosphere. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are consistently praised for cleanliness. Staff are frequently highlighted as helpful and welcoming. The campsite is well-equipped with a shop and a playground, and its location is ideal for exploring nearby attractions like Camber Sands and Dungeness. Nearby activities and attractions cater to a more active holiday, though some guests noted occasional noise from a go-kart track. The limited number of showers and toilets can lead to queues during peak times.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Super friendly staff. Useful shop. I think the closest you can camp to Dungeness so is great for visiting. Interesting area to walk/run/explore around the site- managed by Nature England with interesting birds/botany/wildlife. Useful for early morning dog walk. Plenty of dog poo bins. Managed to see the sun come up which was lovely and the site was super peaceful first thing in the morning. Facilities well maintained and very clean.

Disliked There is a venue on site that hosts events and it is next door to a go kart attraction so be aware that this is not a peaceful break style site. There was a private disco/party that was on all night we were there-so ear plugs were essential for sleep or just imagine you are at a festival! In some ways not all bad and did give the site a good atmosphere but may not suit everyone. Pitches are very close together and so privacy meant we didn't open the windows and doors on our tent as we had close neighbours on all four sides. Also queues at the toilet for the women as only two loos and 2 showers (although there was a separate family facility).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location, staff and general tidiness. Handy shop on-site.

Disliked Not many toilet cubicles or showers. Pitches are quite tightly packed in places.
Dungeness power station and power lines are a bit of a blot on the landscape, but not the sites fault. Water sports centre close by and go-kart track.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked "The toilets" only 2 toilets per male/female which were contained within the shower block, access gained by using key fob, which is annoying if you walk all the way and forget it ! like I did.

The campsite is layed out in square plots which are numbered, you are allocated your number on arrival so have no choice where you pitch. This was unfortunate for us we were camped next to a party of 3 tents that were really loud up until midnight and beyond, even though it states a 8pm- 8am quiet zone.

The other people in the campsite I'd say were mainly locals that used the site for a weekend "get drunk & let the kids run riot round everyone else tent " escape.

There is a function room next to campsite which is used for venues such as a prom which was on when we were there, this was very sweet, however it did make it very busy, noisy and difficult to navigate through people get to the damntoilet! And forgot my fob again!!

There is also a go- cart track next to campsite, which thankfully wasn't in use that day, I can only imagine the noise, which has been mentioned on some previous reviews.

No pubs or hot food within walking distance, a drive into Lydd would be needed.

"The weather" it was predicted thunderstorms for that evening and by god did we get a thunderstorm it was torrential, this of course in no way could be the campsite owners fault.......

I had contracted a chest infection few days before and the damp and rain was making my chest feel really bad, I felt really ill so decided to pack up what we could and leave.

The next day I asked the campsite due to the circumstances could they please take the tent down ( it was an easy 10 minute job as a new kind of pop up tent) and I would collect and pay for the extra nights stay.
They agreed to do this then somewhere along the line said that didn't like touching other peoples tents and it was now classed as fly tipping and a £50 fee was payable!
I was shocked 😧 but agreed as I'd left it there.
Then I had another message stating that the tent had now blown away and was beyond repair.
So I messaged back saying well what now then ?and got a barrage of words back from manager saying you are a lier you never intended to come back for the tent bla bla la. Well as god's my witness I was going to go back and sort it out with him.
It wouldn't have hurt him to just help me out I was there alone with my 16 yr old daughter.
Key fobs for toilets!!!! Don't forget to return to box on departure as these will be charged at £5 each lost fob, and the way he has the payment plan set up online for it, suggests this happens a lot.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great place to stay if you like active sport. The near by lake with water sports and carting race track a stone throw away. This not a place to stay if you are after peaceful and quiet nature…

Disliked Can get quite noisy with the party venue next door.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Very well maintained site with helpful and friendly staff.

Disliked Grey water waste disposal point impossible to use with normal caravan wheeled tanks. The raised faucet prevented disposal. Requires a level or slightly lowered grating as is normal at all caravan club sites.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and comments. That's the first time we have heard about the grey waste being an issue as the actual unit itself is bought fit for purpose. It is on a ramp so possibly that was the issue? Sorry it was an issue in any case :)

Local attractions

A go-karting circuit and a watersports centre are right next door to Herons Park, each with a shop and with expert tuition and courses available for visitors. The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, an award-winning reserve set over 600 acres near Hythe, is also recommended if you're on hol with the offspring, as is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway steaming along for 13 and a half miles from Hythe to the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness. Lathe Farm at New Romney and the Rare Breeds Farm at Ashford should also be popular picks. For beaches, clamber the dunes or go kite buggying at Camber Sands, the only sand dune system in East Sussex, and tackle more fishing (for mackerel) at Dymchurch, like Camber Sands also a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its insect and plant life. Fish, chips and Kent coast views can all be had at the Dungeness headland. Several bike routes are nearby, including the National Cycle Network 2 running through Lydd on its Romney Marsh route from Hythe to Rye; along the four or so miles of the Royal Military Canal, and circular routes around the marsh from New Romney or Snargate. The cobbled streets and afternoon teas of ancient Rye are about ten miles from the site.
