  • Family-run and friendly site within a mile of Lydd
  • Fishing lakes and nature trails on site; watersports next door
  • Showers and toilets, washing-up hut, shop and playground
What do you reckon about pitching up at an amiable and family-friendly place with fishing on site – and a watersports centre right next door? Land a stay at Romney Marsh's Herons Park, a family-run and friendly site welcoming guests (and dogs) for Kent-based stays. Juniors are most welcome too – and if your small sort isn't enamoured with fishing or watersports, you'll likely catch their interest with a mention of the go-karting circuit also next door; the beach at Camber Sands within five miles or the critters of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park within ten or so miles… The Herons Park team can supply info on bike hire and local hikes too. The park has fairly level, marked out grass pitches, a toilet and shower block, a chemical waste point and waste disposal bins within the camping field, and a small shop stocking camping staples such as ice creams, sweets, toys and refreshments. Hired firepits with kindling and logs are on site for guests' use, so speak to the site team after booking to reserve yours. Barbecues are allowed on all pitches, and there's a kids' playground to keep the little ones entertained. If you're here for the angling, you can add a fishing pass to your stay as an extra. (You'll need a current fishing licence if you want to fish two rods; pick one up at the post office.) The town of Lydd and the nearest offsite shop are within a mile.

What customers say

This is a friendly, clean, and well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches, ideal for families and dog owners. Visitors appreciate the helpful staff, the well-stocked shop, and the pleasant natural surroundings. However, some reviewers note that the toilet and shower facilities are limited in number, and the nearby go-kart track can be noisy at times. Plans are in place for facility upgrades.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely campsite with lovely staff very therapeutic at night with the swamp life noises. Good for kids and safe

Disliked Shop would close intermittently throughout the day sometimes for long periods. Poor toilet/shower facilities for the size of the site and constantly flooded for shower use.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and feed back. The weekend you stayed was very busy and the staff were stretched to be covering all areas at once unfortunately. Its rare the shop would ever be open all day but it is available up till 8pm, we would normally put the sign in the door to say what time someone would be back or there is a number to call to be able to ask. We are planning to have new facilities for next season which you can imagine is very costly. I feel our price reflects our site fairly :)

Liked All rest

Disliked allocated fields, too few toilets and showers

From the manager: Thank you for a great review. Unfortunately on pitch up there is not the option to choose your own pitch but we do allow it :) We are hoping to get more toilets/showers in time for next year but its a lengthy process unfortunately. We agree though, we would like more :)

Electric grass pitch

Liked Kids play area is nice, next to a good football and volleyball pitch. Space to put outside tents, shop well stocked, great local beer, reception staff was lovely.

Disliked Bathroom block is a bit of a walk and not as clean as we would have liked, big groups listening to music all day and night.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and feedback. We are hoping to get a new shower block which will be closer next year :) Sorry top hear the facilities were not as clean as you'd like, we normally have lots of reviews saying how clean they are, so must have been a one off. Will look into this though so thank you for bringing it to our attention. Sorry you found the groups noisy, we do ask groups to be respectful of other guests :)

Electric grass pitch

Liked Pitches are great, plenty of room

Disliked Limited shower availability during peak times. Lack of lighting at night

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review and feedback. We are hoping to get a new shower block for next season as we agree there are not enough. Lighting we actually like the lack of it on site as it allows to stargaze without any light pollution which is getting harder to do these days :)

Electric grass pitch

Liked The facilities were always clean and tidy
Great freezer, very handy
Great view

Disliked My tent ended up being too close to other neighboors because all tents were allocated in a circle around the campsite when so much more space was left empty in the middle. I believe if the tent/caravan space were allocated in a spiral it would work better

Electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious, could being Garden games e.g badminton.
Security on the toilets to access with fob.
Family shower room.
Park was ample.
Shop had ample supplies, staff were friendly.

Disliked Shower wasn't brilliant. Sprays outwards not on you.
Our neighbours were extremely loud all day and night but once they left was a well rounded campsite. Not the campsite fault.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for a great review and feedback. Sorry your neighbours were not considerate. We always ask guests to let us know of any noise complaints so we can speak with them :)

Electric grass pitch

Liked Nice site, decent space in between pitches, great little shop and very friendly staff, would definitely go back.

Disliked Showers are a bit tight and if you were on the larger size would be bit of a squeeze but having said that they were adequate and clean.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Great welcome from the staff, very helpful with one of our party getting their van stuck.
The pitch sizes are great, plenty of room. So nice to be able to have fire pit too!

Disliked Facilites are limited, with only 2 showers and 2 toilets in both the mens and ladies ablutions. For the size of the site this really isn’t sufficient.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for a lovely review.

We agree about the showers, we are in the process of upgrading our shower block which is not an easy or fast process unfortunately. We are hoping for next season to have a new block. :)

Local attractions

A go-karting circuit and a watersports centre are right next door to Herons Park, each with a shop and with expert tuition and courses available for visitors. The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, an award-winning reserve set over 600 acres near Hythe, is also recommended if you're on hol with the offspring, as is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway steaming along for 13 and a half miles from Hythe to the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness. Lathe Farm at New Romney and the Rare Breeds Farm at Ashford should also be popular picks. For beaches, clamber the dunes or go kite buggying at Camber Sands, the only sand dune system in East Sussex, and tackle more fishing (for mackerel) at Dymchurch, like Camber Sands also a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its insect and plant life. Fish, chips and Kent coast views can all be had at the Dungeness headland. Several bike routes are nearby, including the National Cycle Network 2 running through Lydd on its Romney Marsh route from Hythe to Rye; along the four or so miles of the Royal Military Canal, and circular routes around the marsh from New Romney or Snargate. The cobbled streets and afternoon teas of ancient Rye are about ten miles from the site.
