General

  • Scenic location in the Elham valley seven miles from Canterbury
  • In the North Downs, a 12-mile drive from the Channel Tunnel
  • Easy access to the M20 and the A2

Ever been to the Elham valley? It's a right pretty part of the North Downs, made up of a chalk valley and set between Folkestone and Canterbury: the 22.5-mile Elham Valley Way is right pretty and right recommended too.

If you're seeking a stay around these parts (also recommended, to put up tired feet), have a look at Goldpark Leisure right in the valley and surrounded by the striking scenery for which the valley is renowned. It's about seven miles from Folkestone and Canterbury and under 10 from Dover's white cliffs, or you could go on further adventures as it's also only 12 miles from the Channel Tunnel...

The site has an amenities building with a toilet and shower room also suitable for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a reception with helpful info on the local area.

Leave the car behind once you get here: the bus stop outside the Goldpark Leisure gate has services stopping at it to take adventurers to both the Kent cities nearby. If you do want to drive, there's easy access from the site to the M20 and the A2.

Route tortuous to get back onto A2. Skinny road not ideal for the longer rigs. Showers poor and leave much to be desired.
    Not a cheap nights stay.
No one to meet us and no one came to speak to us. I don't know if the owner/ manager was there at all.

Location next to bus route to Canterbury. Reasonably quiet (intermittent passing traffic). Enthusiastic and welcoming host.

    Disliked:

Very overpriced for the facilities provided. Inadequate ablution facilities ie. 3 hand basins with no hooks or shelves, small number of toilets and showers compared to number of pitches. These were old but kept clean, however a mens' shower blocked at beginning of the Bank holiday weekend, unable to cope with heavy use. There was only one dish washing basin provider is.

Manager was friendly and kept the basic facilities clean

    Disliked:

Right next to a busy and fast road with lorries and people purposely honking their horns as they went past in the middle of the night.

Very expensive for very basic facilities, been on much nicer sites with more facilities and quieter for the same or less per night.

Only 1 washing up sink for the entire campsite.

A great site for quiet, traditional camping28/08/2019

A nice quiet site with not too many other campers when I was there with my eight-year-old son. Everything worked as it should. Simple, straightforward facilities - hookup and water tap conveniently located, no clubhouse, fruit machines or reverse bungee-type amusements. Clean and tidy bathroom and showers.
Mark the manager was hugely helpful and friendly, particularly to my son who spent ages throwing a ball and having fun with Mark's friendly dogs (we only have a cat at home).
Fantastic scenery and walks within minutes of the site. The entrance is on the Elham Valley Road so you have to use your common sense. But there are some great public footpaths - Mark advised us which routes to try - and plenty of good places to eat and regroup within easy walking distance.
People who want glamping - or a creche to look after their children while they get sozzled - might grumble. Those who want clean, comfortable camping and to actually spend time with their children will love it! We'll be back.

Local attractions

The chalk downlands of the Elham valley are the suggested starting point for hikes around the area; if you're feeling energetic, make it your mission to do the whole 22 and a half mile route of the Elham Valley Way, starting at Hythe and finishing, like certain pilgrims, at Canterbury Cathedral.

Rest up when you arrive then investigate the cathedral further: Canterbury's most famed landmark is the oldest cathedral in England and is of course where Chaucer's lot amused themselves in quarantine by telling many tales. The Canterbury Tales is an award-winning attraction in the city (yes, yes, as well as a book); after that, wander around the shops and pubs before an evening in one of Canterbury's restaurants. And then perhaps another pub…

Also have a wander around the 90 acres of ancient parkland of nearby Howletts Zoo Park, where animals to see include lions, tigers, rhinos and elephants.

Must see

  • Howletts Wild Animal Park (6.0 miles)
  • St Augustine's Abbey (7.0 miles)
  • Canterbury Cathedral (7.1 miles)

National Trust

  • The White Cliffs of Dover (9.5 miles)
  • South Foreland Lighthouse (10.6 miles)
