Goldpark Leisure: Pitches with electric hook-up

General

  • Scenic location in the Elham valley, seven miles from Canterbury
  • In the North Downs, a 12-mile drive from the Channel Tunnel
  • Easy access to the M20 and the A2

Ever been to the Elham valley? It's a right pretty part of the North Downs, made up of a chalk valley and set between Folkestone and Canterbury: the 22.5-mile Elham Valley Way is right pretty and right recommended too.

If you're seeking a stay around these parts (also recommended, to put up tired feet), have a look at Goldpark Leisure right in the valley and surrounded by the striking scenery for which the valley is renowned. It's about seven miles from Folkestone and Canterbury and under 10 from Dover's white cliffs, or you could go on further adventures as it's also only 12 miles from the Channel Tunnel…

The site has an amenities building with a toilet and shower room also suitable for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a reception with helpful info on the local area.

Leave the car behind once you get here: the bus stop outside the Goldpark Leisure gate has services to take adventurers to both the Kent settlements nearby. If you do want to drive, there's easy access from the site to the M20 and the A2.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

This is the second time we have stayed here and it's a great little site with the minimum facilities which makes it great. There were no noisy kids running around all hours you can find your pitch easy. Fresh water and electricity were in easy access and if you need a place that is a base to go out and explore the area then this is it. The bus even stops right outside the site, and there is a nice little garden center just up the road with a lovely cafe

    Mark the site warden

    Disliked:

The site is predominantly permanent residents who seem to have been settled for a very long time. I wouldn’t be comfortable to stay as a single female or group of women alone after a slightly disturbing encounter with one of the permanent residents.

Pitches had a rocky layer under a couple of inches of soil, not the easiest to pitch in.

The nettles and brambles bordering pitches were strewn with rubbish, pallets, mattresses etc.

Dog poo left around the site was a problem when walking to the toilet block in the dark.

The adjoining road is extremely noisy.

The facilities were quite dirty and as others have said could do with up dating.

Convenient location for early morning channel crossing, late check in and early departure was no problem. It took about 25 minutes to the tunnel terminal. I would not stay there for longer, the place seems a little run down.

Local attractions

The chalk downlands of the Elham valley are the suggested starting point for hikes around the area; if you're feeling energetic, make it your mission to do the whole 22.5-mile route of the Elham Valley Way, starting at Hythe and finishing, like certain pilgrims, at Canterbury Cathedral.

Rest up when you arrive then investigate the cathedral further: Canterbury's most famed landmark is the oldest cathedral in England and is of course where Chaucer's lot amused themselves in quarantine by telling many tales. The Canterbury Tales is an award-winning attraction in the city (yes, yes, as well as a book); after that, wander around the shops and pubs before an evening in one of Canterbury's restaurants. And then perhaps another pub…

Also have a wander around the 90 acres of ancient parkland of nearby Howletts Zoo Park, where animals to see include lions, tigers, rhinos and elephants.

Must see

  • Howletts Wild Animal Park (6.0 miles)
  • St Augustine's Abbey (7.0 miles)
  • Canterbury Cathedral (7.1 miles)

National Trust

  • The White Cliffs of Dover (9.5 miles)
  • South Foreland Lighthouse (10.6 miles)
