  • Peaceful site on a family-run farm one and a half miles from Elham
  • Canterbury and Kent beaches within a half-hour drive
  • Direct access to a footpath for the half-hour walk to village pubs
The folks at Wild Woodland Retreat knew what they were doing when they named their little Kent site. Wild and wooded it is indeed, in 33 acres of wild valley and ancient woodland where insects buzz about between the wildflowers and birds nest in the trees. Owners Mark and Hannah have set up the site on their family-run farm, which has plenty of space for guests to run about, light up a campfire or barbecue and just generally chill out and admire the view. For a closer look at your surroundings, there’s direct access to a footpath for walks through the fields and down to the nearest village, Elham. It’ll take you half an hour or so to stroll down there for refreshment from the pubs, tearoom and restaurant, or supplies from the village store. If you’ve brought your canine pal along for walkies, they’re welcome to join you at the pub (cue wagging tails).

What customers say

This beautiful, peaceful site offers spacious, private pitches in stunning natural surroundings, ideal for exploring local footpaths. Guests praise the welcoming hosts, the environmentally friendly approach, and unique facilities like horsebox showers, which are generally well-maintained and functional, albeit rustic. Some mention basic toilets and the need for a torch at night due to the woodland location. Despite minor points like hot water speed, visitors frequently express a desire to return to this magical retreat.

Valley Birches non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Absolutely lovely campsite, I loved all the additional touches, camped in the woods. Perfect camping pitch close to all amenities. The horse box showers were spectacular, the lavender hand spray smells divine. This place was so magical, I met the lovely Alex a friend of the owners who was always available when needed and just so lovely. Enjoyed an an amazing goat walk with the two volunteer ladies who walk them twice daily. I really liked hanging around with these ladies they were a lot of fun and so very knowledgeable about goats. They really truly do put all the animals above themselves and care for them so deeply. Hannah although we didn’t meet has this place running perfectly and clearly cares so much about her animals, workers and campers. It was a peice of heaven on earth. Very clean and maintained and just so magical. I enjoyed lots of cooking and reading. The bar is set high for other camping pitches now. This is a place I will 100% be returning to.

Disliked Nothing it was just perfect.

Valley Birches non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked We had a great time camping on one of the Valley Birches pitches. These two pitches are on a bit of a slope but we didn't have an issue with a four person tent as it was fairly flat near the top, I think you might struggle if you had a very big tent but not sure these pitches are designed for those anyway. The whole site is huge and it felt very private. Showers felt very modern and clean which was nice after a day out. Our son loved the swings dotted around the place.

Valley 2 non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Absolutely loved this place! Beautiful setting, pitches are well spaced out and well maintained whilst keeping the natural landscape. Perfect place to switch off from the rat race. The facilities are great - rustic (basic) but perfectly functional. It was exactly what we were looking for. We stayed on Valley 2 in our campervan and had the best weekend.

Valley 1 non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked INCREDIBLE!! I had the most magical time at Wild Woodland Retreat! The valley is so beautiful and peaceful, massive pitches make you feel all by yourself in the most wonderful natural surroundings. Lots of lovely walks to explore the area all by footpaths through fields and forestland. Truly wild experience but with the comfort of a good shower :) I had such a great time that I came back again the weekend after. Felt so rested and at peace after! Will definitely visite again!

Valley Birches non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Really friendly owners, and such a beautiful location in the Elham valley. The birches pitches are just the right level of secluded, you can easily go your whole stay without seeing another person.
The site is well connected to the local area, with so many footpaths and walks to explore. We had the best time.

Local attractions

This is a tiptop spot to get out for a trot – as well as the lovely walk into the village, the footpath by the meadow leads to the forest of Park Gate Nature Reserve or the tearooms of the Lord Whisky Sanctuary in about half an hour, or to Stelling Minnis Common and windmill in 40 minutes or so. Park Wood, Westwood, Madams Wood and Covert Wood are also easily accessed for more country strolls. If you’re feeling particularly lively, you can walk all the way to historic Canterbury in a couple of hours (although you’re welcome to choose the 20-minute drive instead to save your energies for wandering around the cathedral, the Roman Museum and the city walls). Seeking some sea air, you can either head south for half an hour or so to the sands of Folkestone and Dymchurch (plus a nostalgic ride on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway) or aim north for Whitstable (40 minutes) or Margate (50 minutes). For beasts somewhat more exotic than those seen on site, take your pick from a trio of wildlife parks: Howletts Wild Animal Park, Port Lympne Reserve and Wingham Wildlife Park are all around a 20-minute drive away.
