  • Luxury yurt on a Kent smallholding 10 minutes' drive from Canterbury
  • Blean Woods Nature Reserve 15 minutes’ drive; Margate 40 minutes
  • Woodburning stove inside yurt; outdoor space with barbecue shelter
What a fabulous, warm welcome you’ll receive at The Yurt at Worcesters Farm, a family-friendly glamping site on a smallholding a 10-minute drive from Canterbury, in Kent. Not only will the charming owners stock up the fridge with a few essential food items (bread, eggs, milk, butter and such), they’ll throw in a couple of chilled beers, too. If you prefer a hot brew, tea- and coffee-making facilities are also available. Nice – now all you need to do is kick back and relax. Berty the Yurty (as the owners’ young son calls it) is a large handmade yurt with a comfortable double bed, a woodburning stove and a couple of beanbags. Outdoors, your own fenced-off space comes with a sheltered barbecue/eating area and a campfire space. You’ll also have exclusive use of a composting toilet, hot shower and washing-up facilities. Surrounded by green fields and 20 acres of accessible woodlands (don’t forget to pack your hiking boots…), the yurt sits in an ancient orchard where you might spot the resident geese, pigs and happy free-range chickens. Speaking of which, eggs are complimentary, and you’re welcome to collect them yourself if you’re in a ‘hunter-gatherer’ sort of mood. For any other grocery needs, the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive down the A2, just on the outskirts of Canterbury. If walks and birdwatching are on your agenda, head to Blean Woods National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), which is home to woodpeckers and nightingales, not to mention a herd of bison. If that's not your style, you can spend a day at the seaside: Whitstable and Herne Bay can be reached within a 25-minute drive.

Berty the yurt

Liked: A wonderful stay surrounded by nature was just what we needed. The yurt itself is beautiful and nicely decorated inside, with all the amenities and essentials you need including pots and pans, kettle, utensils, mugs, torches, blanket, hot water bottles, towels etc. The hosts kindly supplied milk, eggs, butter, fresh bread, chestnuts to roast and some of their home grown apple juice which was exceptional. Unlimited logs were supplied to get the fire going which kept the yurt lovely and toasty, and we cooked breakfast on the burner. The surrounding area is beautiful rolling hills, although we didn’t venture out as weather was rubbish, so stayed cosy inside, which was just what we needed. Would be lovely in the summer too, with the use of BBQ. Will 100% be booking again! Thank you Worcesters Farm!!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all. A wonderful stay. Only thing I would add would be a mirror as I have contact lenses to put in.

Berty the yurt

Liked: the yurt was amazing! They had thought of everything. All the equipment and the beers, butter and milk provided was a great touch! The fact it was all cornered off was amazing for our 8 month old puppy meant he could roam around whilst we relaxed. We were lucky with the weather but the log burner and facilities for a bonfire are perfect for colder nights John was really helpful and always on hand via phone to help with any problems Couldn’t recommend enough

Local attractions

Much of Canterbury (10 minutes' drive) has been granted UNESCO World Heritage site, starting with the centuries-old cathedral, with its splendid stained-glass windows and the haunting site of Thomas Becket’s martyrdom. But this is also a lively university city, with heaps of cafés and pubs, performances at the Marlowe Theatre and boat trips on the Great Stour. If Canterbury has whetted your appetite for all things medieval, you can explore ancient pastimes at Joe’s Bows Falconry & Archery (10 minutes). In addition to flying birds of prey and learning to shoot arrows, you can also have a go at axe throwing. If you prefer something more sedate, you can just stroll around the gardens. For some cheeky seaside shenanigans with a hipster twist, head to Margate (40 minutes). The main draws here are sandy beaches and revolving art exhibitions at the Turner Contemporary gallery. There are seasonal rides (and a roller disco) at Dreamland amusement park, which also puts on concerts and events throughout the year.
