General

  • Quiet, out of the way site next to the beach
  • A haven for cyclists, birdwatchers and dog walkers
  • Beach, spectacular sunsets and horse riding on site

No need to be eagle-eyed looking out for a fab and beachy site in Kent: have a stay at the friendly little site of Hawk Place Camping , to be in a wildlife and birdwatching haven among scenery and sunsets so spectacular they were once painted by Turner.

A Kent beach is a pebble's throw from here too, made up of a peacefully secluded stretch that can only be accessed by foot or bike. And if you fancy beach cantering? An equestrian centre is adjacent to the site, running private or group lessons for all ages and levels of experience.

If you're a Londoner, Hawk Place Camping is a topping escape from the city at well under two hours' journey from Victoria to the local train station of Birchington-on-Sea, and although the site is within walking distance of the station, its setting between Minnis Bay and Reculver is set niftily out of the way for quiet stays. (If you're coming by car, Birchington is about an hour and a half from London and is easily accessible from the local Thanet towns.)

It is a small-family run business with simple amenities including a toilet, shower, fresh water point and a waste water disposal. The owners are fairly relaxed and welcome dogs as long as guests respect other visitors and clean up after their pets.

For supplies, Minnis Bay a 15-minute walk away has a couple of restaurants and cafés; Birchington a five-minute drive away has small local shops, supermarkets, pubs and cafés. Barbecues are allowed on site.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A charge of £1 applies for the use of shower.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Lovely little site a stone's throw from a very pebbly and shell filled beach much to the delight of our 5yr old. We had plenty of space in our non-electric pitch to avoid any bumpy ground. Short drive to sandy beaches, and a small high street with various supermarkets. The little fridge in the reception area was unexpected and much appreciated for milk. It even had a small freezer compartment. Shower's lasted 10mins which was much better than the previously mentioned 5mins as I can't wash shampoo out of my hair in such a short time! We actually had an entire corner of the field to ourselves and had space to place games. Very quiet and secluded campsite. Perfect for walkers as it is right next to the coastal path. We used it as a base for visiting family in Margate and it was perfect for this. Everyone was very friendly. Shower's and toilets were basic but clean. Can't ask for more considering the price!

We visited this site last year and it was fair to say it was quite basic. We were therefore very pleased to see the improvements put in place including marked pitches, a new reception unit with washing up facilities, fridge and kettle. The additional shower and toilet planned for next year will be a great addition.

Friendly owner who happily switched our pitch due to the inclement August weather on arrival.

Very inclusive site with a wide range of happy campers and groups made to feel welcome by Jackie.

Being able to hear the sea waves at night time in the tent coupled with a 2 minute walk to the beach and level walks along the sea to lovely cafes/bar etc simply makes this a unique site and one we are definitely going to visit again next year!

The location is excellent with coastal walking and cycling on the door step. We liked the relaxed atmosphere of the place. The toilet was clean and the shower looked OK to us. It's a quiet site with not much going on but overlooks the stables next door and there are horses in the fields.

We like the North Kent area and first stayed at this campsite in April. We returned a couple of weeks ago in early July and have already booked for August. This is a basic site compared to others we have stayed in but it suits us fine as we don't use the facilities offered anyway.

I disagree with the bad reviews and have no real complaints

    Disliked:

The pitch numbers are confusing the first time you are there but print the map of the campsite and this won't be a problem.

Being so close to the beach was amazing literally a two minute walk to the beach so we could walk down and have a BBQ on the beach and watch the sunset. Brilliant place for running (if that's what you like!) and useful having the electric hook up. Site is well spaced and you can access all the needed amenities. Will definitely be going back again soon! Basic toilet and shower but always clean and soap etc. avaliable

    Disliked:

Only two toilets for whole site and 1 shower which meant it was very congested in the mornings and evenings but if you timed it right it was fine!

When you arrive at the site you let yourself in through the gate and drive up to a big cabin signposted reception, in reception you will find a vending machine for midnight munches a sink for washing your dishes but most importantly a site map and a board with your name on it and where you are pitched, the ground is very level and soft and was really easy to peg the tent, we had electrical hook up which was rated at 16 Amps, there are 2 toilets, 1 has a shower that costs £1 which lasts for at least 10 minuets and is very adequate, the beech is 1 minuets walk and you can hear the waves breaking as you fall asleep, this is a no frills site but a little gem with walks and cycling the Viking coastal trail and an unspoilt coastline, there is a proper horse riding place next door too if you like that sort of thing

I really liked how you could just walk into the reception, look at the whiteboard (which had your name on it ) and just get on with your business! The toilets were really clean, and quite close to the pitches. The showers were also really nice too.The people in the neigbouring pitches were nice and quite too. There were other facilities like a kettle, a fridge and a vending machine which made hawk place feel like a second home!
I really loved the view/scenery and how close the campsite was to the beach. My friends and I were only there for 3 nights and we practically memorized the route.
I would definitely recommend this campsite. Very teen friendly!!

    Disliked:

The walk from the train station to the campsite ( this wouldn't be a problem for you if you had light luggage or a mode of transport). My friends and i didn't realise how long the walk would have been, Google maps said it was 25 minutes long, but it took us an hour and a half. I guess this isn't really the campsites fault, but just beware of how long your journey might take before hand! !

Local attractions

This is a cracking part of Kent coast for hikes, bike rides and serene strolls, particularly for those on a weekend city escape... A seawall runs from Minnis Bay a mile and a half from Hawk Place Camping along to Reculver three and a half miles away; as it's tarmaced, cycling, walking or pushing buggies or wheelchairs is a cinch along its length.

The seaside resort of Birchington or Birchington-on-Sea is a five-minute drive away and set between Herne Bay and Margate. It has the eighteenth century manor house, grounds and museum of Quex Park lying to its south, home to the many stuffed African animals of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Three smaller beaches run alongside Birchington's main one of Minnis Bay.

From Birchington, catch a train to other Kent seaside and countryside spots for day tripping, such as Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Chatham and Rochester.
