  • Rural 10-acre Kent retreat with a luxury shepherd’s hut
  • A 10-minute drive to the Port Lympne Reserve and 15 minutes to Hythe
  • Firepit area and public footpath on site; pubs and shops nearby
With meadows, woodlands, fields, orchards, streams and brooks to yourself, it’s a breezy type of stay at the luxury Buckhurst Shepherd’s Hut in the Kent countryside. With 10 acres, there’s a public footpath to navigate your away around this wildlife-packed rural place (with all sorts of animals and birds about, from snipe to rabbits and kingfishers)… and with some exploring already under your belt, next up could be the Port Lympne Reserve safari (10 minutes’ drive) or the historic cinque port town of Hythe (15 minutes). The footpath leads onto more horizons – just look out for the signposts, gates and stiles (including a public bridge over the stream) to the north and south. When you arrive at this site four miles from the M20, you’ll be armed with a welcome pack containing a map of local walks and bus stops (there’s one 200 yards away with links to Ashford, Hythe and Folkestone) and a breakfast hamper (bread, milk, granola, croissants and other tasty bits are included). For more culinary treats, there are country pubs within a couple of miles of the site. The people that run this place recommend fab restaurants and pubs in both of the local villages (within a mile or so of the hut) or the towns. Of course, you’ll be free to let your creativity run wild too, as there’s a full and comprehensive kitchen inside the hut (and plenty of shops a mile or so away). Handily, the hut also has its own bathroom and a firepit outside to see off the day properly.

Local attractions

Hunt down the historical… there’s plenty to go around, whether it’s the Royal Military Canal, medieval high street and steam train railway in Hythe (15 minutes’ drive) or the citadel, the Grade II-listed Mermaid Inn, Ypres Tower and 900-year-old St Mary’s Church in Rye (35 minutes, for particularly fab views from the latter). While it’s easy to spend a while exploring all the historic places, Canterbury’s cathedral and Canterbury Tales museum included (35 minutes), there’s a lot to root you in the present too. Wildlife’s great at this, so map out the way to Wingham Wildlife Park (35 minutes), Howletts Wild Animal Park ltd (half an hour) and South of England Rare Breeds Centre (25 minutes). In Tenterden (35 minutes), there are breweries, vineyards and arts, crafts and antique shops. There are plenty more of these types of places about, but for a drink by the sea or a beach day, options include Dymchurch beach (20 minutes), Dungeness (40 minutes) or Folkestone’s Sunny Sands (25 minutes)… and for more of that coastal wishlist, the White Cliffs of Dover (half an hour) or The Historic Dockyard in Chatham (50 minutes).
