  • Dog-friendly field surrounded by woodland overlooking Romney Marsh
  • Port Lympne Safari Park 10 minutes’ drive; Camber Sands half an hour
  • In the grounds of an old priory; afternoon teas on request
All set for a back-to-nature break in the county known as the Garden of England? Surrounded by the spectacular Kent countryside, on the edge of Romney Marsh, Bilsington Priory Estate Camping welcomes family groups (and their dogs) on its large peaceful field. This rural spot (with horses in a nearby field and easy access to forest trails) sits in the grounds of St Augustine’s Priory, which dates back all the way to the 13th century. Afternoon teas can be arranged if you fancy an indulgent treat, while supermarkets are a 10-minute drive for everyday supplies and barbecue provisions. The nearest pub (which also serves traditional and modern British meals) is in the centre of the village of Bilsington, a five-minute walk away. To work up an appetite for whatever meal you choose, you can stroll through the 300 acres of woodlands adjoining the site, take a spin down to the coast for family bucket-and-spade days by the sea, or go walking and cycling in the High Weald or Kent Downs areas of outstanding natural beauty (20 minutes). Rainy day? No problem: there’s lots of indoor exploration to be done at historic sites like Leeds Castle (half an hour) and Canterbury (40 minutes).

Liked: It was perfect. Peaceful camping out in beautiful countryside, plenty of space and lovely walks on site. Kick back and relax at this beautiful campsite. Wildlife was plentiful, stars so clear as no light pollution . Host welcoming and shared local information , then left us to it , which was just what we liked. Shower and toilets basic but clean. Plenty room to find a level pitch. Us oldies liked the tree swing , such treat.

Liked: Huge field in great location and you can pitch wherever you like. Local pub only a short walk through the adjoining field. Horses and sheep for neighbours. Portaloos were clean, but could do with a couple more dotted around for peak times. Would definitely stay here again.

Liked: lovely back to nature campsite but with loos and shower (essential for me!) It was slightly hard to find, I missed the turning so had to double back. The site is large but not at all crowded I get the impression they only allow a certain number of people to let us have plenty of space Lovely views, I didn't explore the area or use the local pub which I understand is in walking distance as I went to the Hythe Food Fair one day and to the wonderful sandy beach at Dymchurch the other,

From the manager: Thanks for your positive comments, Phillippa, much appreciated! We'll get better signage for the entrance for next season!

Definitely a place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Not very much.

Disliked: You couldn't find a more sloping uneven site to camp on. The toilets were dirty had no soap one of the toilets didn't flush. My view is that the £3 reservation fee and the £17 camping fee is expensive for what is on offer. I would not recommend this site to anyone.

Local attractions

Part of the Aspinall Foundation, Port Lympne Safari Park (10 minutes’ drive) spreads over 600 acres and is home to African and Asian mammals, including big cats, giraffes and gorillas, which you can admire from the comfort of a safari truck through the site. There's also a Dinosaur Forest with lifesize stegosaurus and other prehistoric creatures. Spend a day exploring the dunes, building sandcastles or paddling in the shallow waters at Camber Sands (half an hour), then head to the nearby town of Rye (25 minutes), with its pretty cobbled streets lined with half-timbered buildings. Climb to the top of the Church of Saint Mary for far-reaching views of the area. More seaside adventures await at Margate (one hour), where kids (and grownups) can ride a Ferris wheel and other vintage attractions at Dreamland amusement park. Other highlights in town include rotating exhibitions at Turner Contemporary, the mysterious subterranean Shell Grotto and a lively centre with independent shops and restaurants.
