  • Pop-up campsite on a family farm near Calbourne on the Isle of Wight
  • A 20-minute drive to The Needles, and 15 minutes to Carisbrooke Castle
  • Grass pitches close to walking routes; beaches, pubs and shops nearby
A wild campsite on an Isle of Wight working farm, Park Farm Camping offers basic facilities and a gorgeous location surrounded by fields – and walkers listen up – it’s within easy reach of footpaths and bridleways connecting with smashing hikes to Mottistone Down, Brighstone Forest or the Worlsey and Tennyson Trails. Family- and dog-friendly, this pop-up site is set in a paddock away from the main farmyard, and you can drive up, park and pitch your tent – no lugging of gear for you. Simple facilities include a loo and sink (with hot water), an outside tap with drinking water, communal fridge and freezer and a charging point (in a shed about 30 metres from the paddock). With only a few pitches, there’s loads of space to let off steam safely, as well as peaceful views across arable fields and forestry – with even a glimpse of the sea. You can dump the car and stroll to the pub in Calbourne (15 minutes’ walk) or if you’d rather fend for yourselves, pick up bits and bobs for the barbecue in Newport (15 minutes’ drive). For daytime jaunts in the car, you’re also close to Carisbrooke Castle, the beach at Freshwater and cute boutiques in Yarmouth (all 15 minutes). But whatever you get up to during the day, try to make it back to base to catch the sunsets and enjoy the stars glittering in clear skies far above you as night sets in. Once you have booked, get in touch with the site team, as discounted ferry tickets may be available. Firepits are also available to hire.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I stayed over with my motorcycle - the site was easy to locate, and fun to access via a short farm track (a little riding on hardpack/gravel). The site itself was neat and small, adjacent to farmland, woods and a small cottage. The single toilet was clean, with soap/toilet paper/washbasin with hot water provided. The site was not busy (3 out of 8 pitches taken) so was quiet and relatively peaceful. The location was perfect too - not only for access to some nice walks, but also via road to other parts of the island (lynch lane can be entered from the North or South, with a crossroads at nearby Calbourne providing East/West routes). Overall I very much enjoyed my stay and couldn’t have asked for more really.

Disliked: No walking access to access any kind of convenience store

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Stunning views, and wildlife/farm animals all around. Great for walkers. The room with the fridge and freezer had lots of local info including a bus time table, local pubs etc.

Disliked: Long way from shops so make sure you bring essentials with you! Not much to do unless you are into walking or cycling etc. No reception or anyone to greet you, just a case of pitching a tent. No lighting on the site

Route directions

Some satnavs may try to take you through inaccessible private land, so please follow these instructions. Drive to the village of Calbourne, then at the crossroads take the Brighstone turning (Lynch Lane) and drive through the village. After Winkle Street, take the second turning on the right, up the farm track directed by a white arrow. Follow the track to the paddock until you see a white arrow (on the right after the first house). The campsite is about 3/4 mile from the crossroads.
