Southland Experience Freedom Glamping: Authentic safari tent (photo added by manager on 19/05/2021)

General

  • Family-friendly glamping in the Isle of Wight's Arreton Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Sandown beach; Ventnor 15 minutes
  • Well-equipped canvas safari tents on the outskirts of a small village

Sailing the ocean blue, hiking up Tennyson Down and building sandcastles on Sandown's golden beaches – there's nothing quite like a trip to the Isle of Wight to get you into a jolly holiday mood. Southland Experience Freedom Glamping, a well-maintained site on the outskirts of a quiet village, is just the kind of spot where you can easily get into the swing of things – it has top-notch canvas accommodation for hassle-free stays and is a mere 10-minute drive from the coast.

Located in Newchurch and under a mile from the village pub and post office, Southland Experience Freedom Glamping has high-quality facilities intended to make your stay here as comfortable as possible. Well-kept toilet and shower blocks (including disabled cubicles), family-friendly washrooms, a kids' playground and a dog-walking area mean that a wide range of groups will feel instantly comfortable here – and that's before you look inside your tent…

Inside, there's room for up to five overnight guests, with nifty features like proper beds, linen, a well-equipped kitchenette and a fridge to help you travel light. These smart pre-pitched safari tents also come with plenty of outdoor space and garden furniture, and all units have uninterrupted views over neighbouring fields and the wider Arreton Valley.

    Unexpectedly impressive!
Despite reading all the reviews, I wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it was. We spent 3 nights in a Safari tent. Two bedroom areas, a living room, a kitchen with elec hobs and fridge and microwave. It was basically a small house with canvas walls. The sofa and chairs on the veranda were nice for an early evening beer before dinner.
Facilities were good, small basket of cookies and milk to go with a cup of tea on table, toilets, showers and laundry room all clean and serviceable. I would give it too marks.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike, except there was no nearby shop for us as we were on bikes. That’s not the campsite’ s fault - even locals in the village complained they had to drive to get basic provisions. Fortunately we had enough food with us for the first evening and we cycled to shops next day.

The safari tent was perfect , it was better than expected!

We stayed for 2 nights and wish it was longer

Location on site was good as 1minute walk from showers and with ample parking ,it had plenty of space between tents , outside table and parasol, bbq stand and they supply an instant one to use , I took my own Weber one as not aware of it .

The tent is a perfect size , spotlessly clean , comfortable bed , kitchen had everything you would need ,heater if chilly.

Porch had comfortable sofa , chair and table with fairy lights for ambience when dark.

The showers/toilets are the cleanest I've every come across on a campsite and shower was amazing .

Other visitors were friendly , it is a very quiet site with all caravans/ motorhomes that i saw , I believe they have 5 or 6 tent pitches somewhere though .

A local pub is 15 mins walk away.

    I would 100% stay again

Local attractions

The long and sandy beaches around Sandown (10 minutes' drive) and the Isle of Wight's gorgeous east coast are very close indeed – head here for amusements on the pier, family-friendly bathing beaches, fossil hunting and sipping drinks in seafront cafés. Meanwhile, on the west coast, surfers have good prospects for catching the island’s bigger waves – and there are a couple of surf schools between Freshwater and Brook Bay (both 30 minutes) where newbies can master the basics.

For further contrast, try a trip to the ornate Victorian town of Ventnor (a quarter of an hour away to the south) where there are botanic gardens and elegant villas to admire. This part of the coast is also home to the ever-popular Blackgang Chine amusement park (20 minutes) and splendid St Catherine's Lighthouse (25 minutes).

The site is a short drive from inland attractions too, including the Garlic Farm (five minutes), where you can take farm tours, taste the wares or pick up a range of tasty sauces that are sure to add a kick to your cooking. Also away from the coast is the peaceful Yar River Trail, a clearly signposted walking and cycling route that passes about a mile and a half north of the site entrance.

Must see

  • Dinosaur Isle (3.0 miles)
  • Isle of Wight Steam Railway (3.2 miles)
  • Carisbrooke Castle (4.8 miles)

  • Bembridge Windmill (5.4 miles)
