General

  • Small exclusive site near Newport
  • Five minutes' walk from Carisbrooke Castle
  • Communal barbecue/pizza oven for guests' use

Well now, this is a neat little Newport campsite. Windmill Campersite is a small and exclusive place on the Isle of Wight, set up for peaceful peeps looking for a quieter spot than the bigger busier island sites, and in historic surrounds five minutes' walk from Carisbrooke Castle (the site gets its name from the old windmill that's thought to have been the main source of water for the castle).

Newport is 20 minutes' walk away, and the site is within 20 minutes' drive of each and every beach on the island, but you might want to wander around on site first...The Newport owners have clearly made it a mission to make things a bit different here, such as at the on-site showershack: modern loo and shower facilities with music, hot air heating and supplied by solar-powered electricity and water. (A more standard shower room with hand basins, mirrors and loos is on site too.)

There's also Big Bertha, a big barbecue/pizza oven for guests to use, and Spudomatic, the Windmill Campersite jacket potato oven. (Over 25s only for both, please, and use safely and with sense.) And the horse grazing in the historic Windmill field, chickens clucking around, and the small antiques centre to browse for bargains….

Walk through the site along streams to reach the moat of Carisbrooke Castle, as well as the local village with its shops and pubs.

Windmill Campersite is amazing with everything we wish for from a campsite and more. Set in an idyllic setting with beautiful views and very quiet it has the most fabulous quirky and original features and facilities. We loved the showershack with its unique features - artistic, yet efficient and functional. Look at the website photos to get a flavour. The host is very warm and welcoming, down to providing, tea, coffee and milk as well as kettle, microwave and everything else necessary for a comfortable stay.

Absolutely everything! This is a truly unique campsite - quirky, friendly, pretty, gentle, fun... You will never stay anywhere quite like it and, like us, you will want to return again and again. My 6yo wants to camp here "every year forever"!

The facilities are amazing - and the little social hub of bonkers BBQ, Spudomatic, cozy firepit and massively well-equipped Caterator kitchen mean that everyone gently hooks up together over burgers and s'mores as easily as all the children becoming instant buddies. I loved the OMO Reliant Robin launderette and the Showershack deserves its own website :D!

If you're not lucky enough to stay in Galahad - the Westland Wessex Helicopter, you'll probably be able to blag a nose inside - either between guests or from the totally smitten occupants. It's awesome!

Imagine Caractacus Potts getting together with George Clarke to design a little campsite for big kids and you have an idea of the treats in store here.

There is wi-fi, but you'll be so laid back you probably won't use it much and the kids won't want their ipads much either when there is (I think) the actual Night Garden boat near the firepit to have pirate adventures in.

Stewart and Rhys are wonderful and generous hosts. In fact, Stewart went truly above and beyond the call of duty when this feeble female couldn't figure out how to put my eBay bike carrier onto the car, so after a few fruitless attempts at consulting Google, he came to the rescue with about a mile of parachute strapping and we just lashed it & bike to my trailer - sorted!!

Think we just found our 'forever campsite' for the summer holidays - I'll be booking again for 2018 soon...

Everything! A lovely clean and well maintained site with good facilities. The quirky vans and communal area are literally fantastic; shower shack, BBQ, fire pit, pizza oven and baked potato oven, (see the photos on their website) with a fully stocked kitchen! Very pleasant and friendly family owners, always ready to help or just have a chat. One of the most picturesque parts of the Isle of Wight on your doorstep. Can't recommend this site enough!
