  • Off-grid Isle of Wight site 10 minutes’ drive from seaside Gurnard
  • Osborne 20 minutes’ drive and The Needles Old Battery half an hour
  • Family-friendly with direct access to coastal walks and cycling routes
With rural views wherever you look, The Hydeaway is 10 minutes’ drive from the seaside village of Gurnard on the Isle of Wight. Set along the edge of a scenic valley, the family-friendly pitches invite you to relax amid nature with just the right amount of comfort and space. The site is also home to abundant blackberries, sloes and crab apples just begging to be picked in season, while barn owls and sparrowhawks are frequent visitors all summer long. In keeping with The Hydeaway’s dedication to sustainability, eco-friendly facilities ensure guest comfort without compromising the environment: carefully maintained odour-free compost loos minimise ecological impact, and there’s a chemical toilet waste disposal point, a solar-heated shower and a couple of strategically placed hand-washing stations with biodegradable soap. The designated washing-up zone is also equipped with eco-friendly detergents. Power banks can be hired to keep your devices charged, and there are other useful amenities on site like car parking and undercover bike storage. If you’ve left anything behind, it's handy to know the owners hire out kits containing a small firepit with a starter pack, camping stove and all the cooking basics. As the site is off grid, they recommend bringing torches for evenings under the low-level lighting, along with towels and wellies for exploring the fields, forest paths and coastal walks nearby. Another plus of staying here is that guests get a discount on ferries to the Isle of Wight, which will be sent over after you've confirmed your booking.

Non-electric gravel campervan pitch

Liked We had one of the two camper van pitches (non hookup). Very quiet location. Much of the site is left to nature with a lovely meadow and the grass and wild flowers left to grow between the pitches. Great shower.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Very attentive host, the bedding provided was excellent addition and kids enjoyed playing in the open space.
An easy off the grid experience ideal for both organised and not organised camping enthusiasts.
The shower space was spacious for a family and had plenty of hot water am or pm time.

Disliked Exiting from the parking space into the main road has limited visibility

From the manager: Hi, thank you so much for your review. I'm so glad you and the children enjoyed your stay. We have now revisited the possibility of putting a traffic mirror opposite the entrance to the site and this should be in situ in a couple of days. Thank you!

Jan

Bell tent (four person)

Liked We spent two wonderful nights at this campsite and highly recommend it! The tent was perfectly clean, with very comfortable beds. We loved the welcoming touches of coffee, tea, and cookies. The setup is excellent: a private campfire spot, hot showers, and a useful kettle to use over the fire. The location is beautiful, quiet, and not overcrowded, offering plenty of privacy. Our children were absolutely delighted with the stay and loved the whole experience. The owner deserves a special mention – she is incredibly kind, welcoming, and always ready to help. It is the perfect place to relax in nature. We will definitely be back!

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight is a haven for outdoor lovers, with miles of walks through Parkhurst Forest (five minutes’ drive), plus seaside hikes and bracing clifftop rambles. Keep an eye out for red squirrels as you go. The wetlands of the National Trust-managed Newtown National Nature Reserve (15 minutes) are home to wading birds and raptors, while you can stroll to 19th-century gun emplacements and dramatic sea views at The Needles Old Battery (half an hour). Osborne (20 minutes) was Queen Victoria’s seaside retreat; today you can tour the grand Italianate palace and spectacular gardens, explore Swiss Cottage – built for the royal offspring – or stroll through peaceful woodland. There’s more IOW heritage to discover at Appuldurcombe House (half an hour), a once-majestic Baroque-era mansion that's now slowly decaying, and Yarmouth Castle (20 minutes), a small Tudor fortress overlooking the Solent. After all that sightseeing, take the weight off your feet on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway as it chugs past farm fields and ancient woodland, stopping off at old-world stations like Havenstreet (25 minutes), where you can browse railway memorabilia and watch engineers at work.
