General

  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery, quad biking and other adventure sports

Lions, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Activity Centre is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting.

The team at Marwell Activity Centre have been instructing for more than 25 years so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting.

The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife.

Marwell Activity Centre has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg at the farm shop 15 minutes' drive away).

Please note

Facilities/activities including fishing, archery, junior quad biking, obstacle course, clay pigeon shooting, aerial adventure are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The bar is open between 15/07 and 01/11.

Lovely site with big, level pitches. All the staff were extremely friendly. The food at the bistro was lovely and we could take food away back to our tent. Toilets and showers were ok but not the best. Good park for the kids, we didn’t do any activities because unfortunately they were all booked but next time we shall book them earlier. The water hose was much appreciated for the children on the hottest weekend of the year! They had fun running through it/under it. The football goals in the centre of the field was an added bonus for my football mad son.
Outdoor drinking water supplied and the washing up sinks were left clean and tidy but everyone that used them.

Also, everyone took social distancing seriously which was a wonder of mine. Hand sanitiser was welcomed before entering the toilets/showers, the restaurant and reception.

Overall, really nice weekend and would definitely return.

    Disliked:

The shop is within the restaurant with extremely basic necessities so don’t rely on that for snacks. It also doesn’t open until 9am which is annoying when you want some milk at 7:30am!

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your kind review. We seem to have been very fortunate on the social distancing front, the vast majority of our visitors have been fantastic. The water hose has certainly gone down very well! See you again soon,

Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely site, the pitch we had was pet size and the toilets/showers were decently clean throughout our stay.
Unfortunately due to the current situation, few of the activities were open (quite expensive) and they had all been booked, but we still had fun. The kids loved it!
The fire pit is a must!
Good value for money when we booked but I understand they may have nearly doubled the cost and, if that’s the case, we wouldn’t book again because on top of the activities prices, it would be too expensive for what you get.

Fabulous site, well geared towards our brood of different aged boys, to make friends and be free to play and do sport. They loved the goals in the middle of each field, great idea!

    Disliked:

Staff were lovely and very helpful but although we put our names on a list for a fire pit, we seemed to get missed (new arrivals advised us that they’d just gone straight over, booked and paid and got one immediately). Little disappointing as we’d geared up for a camp fire and bbq night but it didn’t happen.

From the manager...

We are so so sorry you guys missed out on a fire pit :( we are brand new to this camping thing but we are learning very fast! We have put a more robust system in place now so nobody gets missed off our list. Sorry again! It looks like you guys had a great time apart from the lack of fire, which is fantastic to hear. Hopefully we see you again in the near future. All the best,

Team Marwell

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest.

The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes).

The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
