  • Beachfront site with spectacular views over the Solent
  • Beaulieu 20 minutes by car; half an hour from Lymington marina
  • Breakfast available; activities including a ski slope and velodrome
Simple, comfortable and close to a whole lot of action – this fab site at the end of Calshot Spit has top views over the Solent coast and easy access to on-site activities for thrills on land and water. Calshot Activities Centre's brill beachfront bunkhouse has essential amenities like well-kept loos and showers, a communal kitchen, a spacious dining room and – arguably most importantly of all – splendid sea views right from your bedroom window. There's a variety of set-ups in the sleeping quarters here, making Calshot a fab base for groups of all descriptions seeking self-catered stays. Outside, there's a shingle beach where you can chill and watch the ferries go by; on most days you can see right across the Solent to Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower and the hills on the Isle of Wight (both are well within range if you fancy sallying off site for the day). As you might expect, this activity centre also has boatloads of adventurous ents, including a dry ski slope, indoor velodrome, climbing wall and kayaks. Cooked breakfasts (i.e. the best kind of the most important meal of the day) are also available. It's a 20-minute walk along the beach to Calshot village, where there's a bus that can link you up to Southampton; the nearest supermarket is a 10-minute drive away. Car parking is included for the duration of your stay.

Local attractions

Take to the beach at Lepe Country Park (15 minutes' drive), a nearby nature spot where woodland glades meet the Solent sea shore. After exploring these wild surrounds, check out the park's informative display boards to get a handle on the role this place played in the run-up to D-Day. Another local crowd-pleaser is the Beaulieu Estate (20 minutes), home to the National Motor Museum, a scenic estuary and the ruins of a 13th-century abbey. If cars are churches aren't your thing, worry not – you can also get to Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway in the same amount of time, plus ample shopping opportunities on offer in Southampton (35 minutes) and Portsmouth (an hour). After giving your credit card a workout at West Quay or Gunwharf’s outlets, give your bank balance a break and pursue simpler (and cheaper) pleasures at Furzey Gardens (30 minutes), Lymington marina (30 minutes) or Dark Lane Pond (10 minutes), a local angling spot. A low-budget couple of hours can also be had in Lyndhurst (35 minutes), where the New Forest Heritage Centre Museum is fully free to enter.
