General

  • Camping on an 82-acre estate between the New Forest and river Test
  • A 10-minute drive from Romsey town centre and Paultons Park
  • Well-stocked fishing lakes and clubhouse serving hot meals or snacks

With laidback camping, nature all around and plenty of outdoor activities, Broadlands Lake Campsite is the real deal. Getting here could hardly be easier – the site is a few minutes' drive from the M27, meaning you have Romsey town centre, the Test Valley and the New Forest National Park all within close range.

Set on an 82-acre estate in a handsome part of Hampshire, this site can also sort you with day fishing tickets. Anglers have three lakes and a chalk-based river to choose from, with key species including carp, bream, tench, roach, perch and trout.

Whether or not you're planning on fishing, the site's exclusive access to the Test is a big plus as far as scenery is concerned. The pitching area is by the lake's edge, and you can explore other riverside beauty spots like Romsey (10 minutes' drive) or Mottisfont (20 minutes). Finally, there’s the fact that the 44-mile Test Way footpath is a few minutes' walk away if you feel like stretching your legs while out sightseeing.

You're a short drive from lots of food options here, but if you'd rather stick around on site there's also a cosy clubhouse that serves up hot meals and a range of tasty snacks to eat in or take away. Other facilities including brick-built toilets and showers (near the clubhouse), portaloos in various corners of the site and a cold-water washing-up area also help make pitching up here that little bit easier.

Quiet site (we were only people staying there), nice lakes and nature sorroubding, pitching areas relatively flat. The cafe looked to sell good cakes but we never tried any. Friendly staff. Good location to get to nearby towns. Campsite was quiet - we were the only group. Sheltered location so very little wind.

    Disliked:

Only a few portaloos dotted around the site. If the site was busy they'd get quite disgusting quite fast. Only 1 shower and have to ask for a key for it and it's a long walk or drive back to the entrance. Right next to a motorway which you can clearly hear but it is drown out as background noise after a while. Relatively expensive for what you get for camping, seems like it's fishing lakes that have decided to open up some space for camping. Gates shut after 9pm but you can pay a deposit to get a key for the gates. Site seems to be mainly for fishing do facilities shared with fishers.

Nice pitch up location. Porta loo was clean. Fairly flat land.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block was VERY far away from the tent pitches ( about a 2-3 minute drive around the site). Not a huge space for tents, we were a group of 6 and it was just us so it felt very spacious however had there been any other campers would have started to feel cramped quite quickly.
Next to motorway so constant sound of cars - not too distracting as it becomes background noise after a while but if you're after sounds of the countryside maybe not ideal.

Portable toilet disgusting, have better toilets near the cafe.

From the manager...

Thankyou for your feed back , we note your comment on the portaloo,
Just to clarify our portaloo is only 2 months old and cleaned a minimum of twice daily by us and deep cleaned steamed and empty weekly by a professional sanitisation company , we do hire this in purely for the convenience of the campers to save the long walk back to the brick built toilet block near the clubhouse,
I feel your Comment is a general comment aimed at portaloos rather than our portaloo ,
We feel it would cause more of an inconvenience to not have one there at all !
We are a very natural campsite for visitors that enjoy peaceful surroundings and wildlife and want to keep the area as natural as possible!

Greeted in the clubhouse and given a leaflet that explained everything, then directed to the campsite around the back of the fishing lakes, saw some deer as we were setting up in the early evening , such Beautiful natural surroundings ,some of the campsite area was new ,
we stayed on the lake edge which was more established ground, we saw many birds from herons , swans , greylag geese , ducks with ducklings , cuckoo and kingfishers also an owl nesting box so assuming they have resident owls aswell ,
The campsite had a portaloo but couldn’t fault it very clean and really convenient to be so close , other toilets and shower are by the clubhouse which looked fine but didn’t use them as I was only on a short stay ,
we ate in the clubhouse in the evening , very reasonable price and food was amazing, followed by an Icecream or fresh donuts which is a must !
Made to feel very welcome overall a great stay and would definitely go back !
Such a central place to stay with so many nearby places to visit next time will be a longer stay and will take our bikes as I’ve been told there are some lovely bike rides locally!

We came to visit Saturday night, really enjoyed our stay! The staff were lovely, really friendly and accommodating! Found a beautiful spot on the lake side, was very private and peaceful. The wildlife was amazing, made friends with some baby geese, the rescued cats were friendly and the hens were cool too! The facilties were as to be expected, had a few drinks in the club house garden in the evening, and we got a delicious vegetarian breakfast in the morning, we even got some cooking tips from the chef, what a nice guy! We will definitely be back again!

Don't listen to any bad reviews, it's well worth a visit! Thanks for having us!

Local attractions

Planning a kid-friendly itinerary is particularly easy in this part of the world – rural-themed outings to Longdown Activity Farm (10 minutes' drive) and the rides at Paultons Park (10 minutes) should keep younger members of your brood happy, while more adventurous teens may prefer a trip to Calshot Activity Centre (25 minutes) for climbing, kayaking and windsurfing.

Cycling types, meanwhile, could head either to Calshot's indoor velodrome or journey out to the New Forest's extensive network of bike paths (from 15 minutes' drive). New arrivals would do well to start off in Lyndhurst (20 minutes), where you can hire a range of two-wheelers and get to grips with the lay of the land at The New Forest Heritage Centre.

If you're drawn instead to the quiet, grassy landscapes of the Test Valley, head to National Trust-run Mottisfont (20 minutes), which has a microcosm of the local area – a walled garden, gorgeous farmland, chalk-based rivers and a historic priory. For more green lawns and brilliant blooms, make the trip to privately owned Houghton Lodge Gardens (30 minutes).

Must see

  • Paultons Family Theme Park (2.2 miles)
  • Southampton Maritime Museum (5.1 miles)
  • Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway (5.9 miles)
