  • Peaceful glamping site in the grounds of a New Forest pub
  • In Brook, a 10-minute drive from Lyndhurst; Lymington 25 minutes
  • Furnished bell tents with internet access; pub food and drinks served
This peaceful glamping site in the small village of Brook, Hampshire has a particularly winning combination – big, bright bell tents, plentiful pub food and easy access to fantastic forest trails. Dragons Den Camping – so-named for being in a quiet paddock behind the family-friendly Green Dragon pub – is a mile from the A31 and M27. These easy road connections open up a whole world of choice when it comes to days out: national park trails around Lyndhurst (10 minutes' drive), Beaulieu's National Motor Museum (15 minutes), sea-water swims at Lymington (25 minutes) and Salisbury Cathedral (35 minutes) are all strong contenders. Don't be surprised if you see semi-wild horses, ponies, donkeys and pigs roaming the surrounding countryside – this New Forest tradition has been going on for hundreds of years, and their animal antics may well make your holiday that little bit more memorable. Sometimes, as the site's pictures show, the local livestock like to hang out right outside the pub. These well-made bell tents are daintily decked out for up to two people, with a comfortable double bed, bedding, a firepit and a picnic table all included. Toilet facilities are located in the pub and are accessible during opening hours, and it's worth bearing in mind that you'll have to go elsewhere for showers – it's simple enough to swing by a local leisure centre, such as Totton (15 minutes), if you're staying for more than a couple of nights.

Local attractions

Ready to pack a picnic? This site is a five-minute drive from Fritham, where there's a footpath to the neighbouring hamlet of Frogham that passes through diverse New Forest scenery. There are more interesting rambles on offer at Rufus Stone (five minutes), where unlucky King William II was fatally shot with an arrow while out hunting with his court. Shopping trips at Southampton's Westquay Shopping Centre (20 minutes) are also on the cards, as are cinema trips and watching the boats and cruise ships sail by in the city's Ocean Village quarter (25 minutes). After urban explores around the shops and docks, you can also arrange quieter times at Mottisfont (20 minutes), a National Trust property, or the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens (20 minutes). As for the coast? There's Calshot (25 minutes), a shingle spot with a great outdoor activity centre, Bournemouth (30 minutes) with its miles of sandy beaches and Lymington (25 minutes), a well-heeled old market town where you can also catch the Isle of Wight ferry.
