  • Pop-up wild camping site on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Peppa Pig World, and 25 minutes to Marwell Zoo
  • Next-door to Petlake Alpaca Farm; pub with food 20 minutes’ walk
If you’re looking for a bit of Hampshire wild-camping action within easy reach of beaches and theme parks, then Top Corner Camping should hit the spot. This spacious pop-up meadow site is on the edge of the New Forest, between Cadnam and Netley Marsh and near Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth. This is a handy base for families wanting to spend a day or two with Peppa Pig (Peppa Pig World is 10 minutes’ drive away) but also preferring the freedom of camping close to nature. You might get to experience a colourful sunset, spot deer and owls as you meander around the camping field, or have the chance to enjoy glittering skies on clear nights. Ancient woodland edges the pitches, so you can set up in the shade or choose a sunny place for your tent. And as this is wild camping, please note that there is no power supply in the field, so bring a supply of torches to find your way around after dark. What the owners do offer is a toilet and a fresh water supply – aside from that, you’re left to your own devices. Follow the footpath down to the cosy village foodie pub (20 minutes’ stroll) or try excellent fish and chips at Totton, 10 minutes’ drive away. If you’d prefer to go down the self-catering route, local stores and supermarkets are both within five minutes’ drive. One more thing: as Top Corner Camping is right next door to Petlake Alpaca Farm, sadly they do not permit dogs.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This was everything we wanted for our short stay. A no frills camping base . The site was clean and tidy, Helen the owner cleaned the portaloo daily and plenty of bins and bin bags meant there was no need for any litter. We chose to park roadside and can honestly say the traffic noise never affected our sleep ..if anything it was the animal noises..foxes deer and the occasional sounds from the alpaca farm next to the field. We stayed during the heatwave and chose to pitch as close to the trees as possible this kept us in the shade during the afternoon and evening. The location was great with Totton 10 minutes drive away Lyndhurst 20 minutes with traffic. A visit to the White Horse pub for a meal is just a short walk away with nice affordable meals, however food isnt served after 8.30pm and the alpaca farm is great place to visit for adults and kids alike.

Disliked: Lack of signs on the main road to tell you that you are approaching the site .However Helen has done her best with bunting and fairy lights . But as it is a fast road approaching the site, maybe some signs either side of entrance perhaps 100 metres away would both help and be safer approaching and exiting the site.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review and feedback regarding the signage. Your pictures were very nice. I will be writing to ask for permission for concealed entrance and Slow Down markings for next year. It is a fast road and I try to ensure campers are aware before they arrive. It was great to meet you both and I hope you come back next year.

Very clean facilities and beautiful area, neighbouring alpaca field is very entertaining!…

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very clean facilities and beautiful area, neighbouring alpaca field is very entertaining! The management were extremely friendly and helpful giving a phone call before our arrival to check we had all the info we needed.

Disliked: The pitches don’t stray too far from the road, so constant vehicle noises could disturb the otherwise very peaceful experience

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to give me your review. Your feedback is very useful and I will be looking at ways to reduce the road noise for next year. I hope you will recommend me to others wanting to pitch up with easy access to both the city and forest and maybe see you again next year.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This was a lovely site, clean toilet, and back to basics, but so quiet!! Would definitely recommend and go back at another time. There was only 3 other campers and it was ideal for us as we wanted something quiet. The host is just lovely, she comes every day to make sure everything is ok and to sort rubbish and clean toilet which is a lovely touch. We took our dog who loved chilling out with us. Was lovely seeing the deer in the morning and evening and we even walked up and said hello to the alpacas in the next field. This site is ideal if you want to get away from a busy bustling life and have a couple days with your loved ones in a space that is great and the pitches are so spacious!

Disliked: Nothing it was perfect!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really lovely scenery - we saw some deer in the evening and first thing in the morning which was beautiful to wake up to! Also surprisingly quiet considering the site is next to a main road. Helen is a superb host, was really welcoming on the phone and even came down to the camp site to clean things and check on everyone. Was perfect for what we needed and really close to Southampton too!

Disliked: The field has a few ruts which makes setting up camp a bit difficult. Also meant that it was quite hard to drive my little fiat 500 safely to a spot on the field. We were advised about the ruts before arriving and it didn’t ruin our stay, but I think it would be worth fixing them for future campers!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review and feedback. I am getting the ruts sorted. I hope you will return for another visit sometime.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly staff and nice area with some Llama's and other wildlife nearby, nice spot for stargazing and enjoying the sun.

Disliked: Main road quite close to campsite so car noises are quite annoying but definitely slow down towards the evening

Local attractions

Animal-mad kids will probably go potty for the cute alpacas at neighbouring Petlake Alpaca Farm (five minutes’ walk), where you can accompany the beasts on their daily exercise. Elsewhere, there are rare snow leopards and Amur tigers to encounter at Marwell Zoo (25 minutes), and otters, badgers and deer at New Forest Wildlife Park (10 minutes). You’ll find an altogether different sort of animal at Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (10 minutes), with kids’ rides themed around the pink cartoon pig. Longing to feel sand beneath your feet? Head for Lymington beaches (half an hour) or the sandy stretch and amusements on the pier in Bournemouth (35 minutes). Poole’s beaches include the manicured Sandbanks (50 minutes) and dunes at Studland (an hour). Mix in a bit of history with a visit to the Tudor-era Mary Rose flagship at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (35 minutes), or learn about the story of Southampton and ‘The Titanic’ at the innovative Sea City Museum (35 minutes). For transport on dry land, head to the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (20 minutes) and its superb collection of vehicles from across the ages.
